The purpose of this text is to address questions surrounding institutionalization of African knowledge. By wondering what remained of him when his mother died and by explicitly asking historians to look towards Akometam, Mongo Beti forces his reader to reconsider the diagnosis of intellectual sterility applied to African societies “without literacy”. He also suggests avenues for epistemological consideration by identifying a vulnerable spot in the transmission of African knowledge which is the inability of the young generation of African intellectuals to embrace the philosophical legacy of their predecessors. Although the importance of history in Mongo Beti’s work is well established, research is less prolific on the vision that this Cameroonian writer had of the future of the African people. Yet his work, inspired by everyday life and anchored in the immediate history of the African continent, is strewn with precise reflections on the future of the Black world. The present article explores in Beti’s critical and literary production the foundations of an “omniprésent présent” (François Hartog, Régimes d’historicité, 2003) which highlights another obsession, that of a dream of self-determination and prosperity for the African peoples. This article examines the ideological aspect of the representation of the rural environment in Mongo Beti’s works. It analyses the presuppositions or implicit ideas that underlie the fictionalization of the countryside in order to elucidate the author’s representation of the peasants. It comes to the conclusion that the idea of a new rurality put forward in Mongo Beti’s writing results from the author’s ambivalent attitude towards the peasants : even though he takes their side against the (post)colonial political and economic powers, he decries their cultural and technical backwardness.

Cette thèse étudie les romans du canon réaliste français, en particulier Le Rouge et le noir et L’Éducation sentimentale, sous l’angle d’une textualité parallèle ancrée dans la langue érotique et les pratiques et les lieux de la subculture pédéraste. Principalement étudiée jusqu’ici dans des corpus identifiés comme érotiques ou dans des passages représentant l’homosexualité, cette homotextualité est ici inscrite dans la diégèse hétérosexuelle qu’elle permet de relire de manière située et historicisée.

The article is part of the work on media changes induced by digital technologies. He postulates that the offbeat editorial approaches of African pure players are part of an objective of legitimization and that the methods of digital writing integrate economic logics. The analysis of generic journalistic genres (flash, surveys, interviews), offbeat genres (satire, rapped newspaper) and digital genres (fact-checking , data journalism) shows that the fact of alternating formats results from an objective of legitimation, of a competitive game but also of capturing the audience. This article examines the theoretical and practical interconnectedness that crosses fear, media and governing practices. It uses examples from African countries, especially Cameroon, to investigate the ways in which the media are instrumentalized to draw on fear of the Other in general and of opposition leaders in particular in order to support authoritarian regimes. Not only does it focus on the structural changes that lead to a more subtle media control in spite of an apparent liberalization, but it also further describes the discursive devices used to generate and perpetuate fear.

This article uses semi-directive interviews of a dozen media actors in Burkina Faso to examine the transformations of print journalism in the digital age. It reveals that digital technology does not fundamentally change the structure of the field. It rather keeps it in a sort of “in-between” journalism where traditional media routines combine with an appropriation of innovative practices both in the production of information and in its dissemination. That takes place in spite of relative contained economic crisis that makes this hybrid model possible.

Several radio stations on the African continent have been using or experimenting in recent years with the WhatsApp mobile application to gather and disseminate information. Knowing that voice exchange functionalities without the costs associated with conventional telephony are among those preferred by WhatsApp users in Africa, this study analyzes these uses of WhatsApp in relation to changes in the production and dissemination of radio content. The study is an illustration of the hybridization of the media system and shows that “traditional” mobile telephony is still popular with listeners in their on-air interventions.

Fact-checking has become an increasingly important practice, especially with the birth of the internet and social media. In Tunisia, the context of the 2019 presidential and legislative elections saw the birth of the Tunisia Check News platform managed by the Independent High Authority for Audiovisual Communication, with the collaboration of the public media. In this article, we present the context of the emergence of this platform within the community of Tunisian journalists. The solution to making the French language more gender-inclusive at a quicker pace is to incorporate non-binary grammar early on in French education worldwide.

This article uses ecofeminism to study the status of women in French, Spanish and Portuguese speaking African countries. Taking Mongo Beti’s character, Perpetua, as an archetype, it demonstrates that women are subjected to a twofold domination that associates them with nature. Since the ideology of capitalism and progress that underlies African modernity views nature as dead matters to be conquered and exploited, it also rationalizes the oppression of women. Indeed, the reification of nature results in the social representation of women’s body as the repressible Other, a production tool and as exploitable resources.

The suffering of the black body has reclaimed center-stage in the media galaxy thanks to the Black Lives Matter phenomenon, a movement that lives on social media. In this contribution, I argue that despite its ephemeral nature, Black Lives Matter proceeds from a long tradition of black activism. Locating the current reincarnation of the long struggle for black human rights leads us to the trope of metaphors of slavery that captures the materiality of the black suffering body. Decoloniality is a concept coined by Walter Mignolo to fight against the invasion of the euro-American imaginary in the rest of the world that Anibal Quijano calls coloniality.
