With her book, Aissatou Cissokho goes well beyond what is normally considered to be a simple tourist guidebook. Her social guide focusses on the urban, social and religious aspects of the Senegalese capital. Within these three circles she progressively criticises the education of young people, structures of the State, and the greed of certain religious representatives. By virtue of its openness, however, Dakar, la touriste autochtone evokes other potential problems as well.

This study will focus on the diversity, conjunction and separation of Francophone literatures of the South (Africa, Antilles and Maghreb). The aim is to underscore the characteristics and differences of this literary production in order, on the one hand, to consider its originality and sphere of influence and, on the other hand, to appreciate its singularity and plurality.

De La Bilangue De Khatibi À L'A-Langue Amère De Fouad Laroui: Amour Bilangue Ou Méfiez-Vous Des Parachustistes, Mireille Rosello Jan 2000

Fouad Laroui puts forth a new model of relationship to the language, one that separates from the idealized notion of the mother- language couple (place of origin and tradition, allegorical figure of the colonized and humiliated country) that characterized the previous generation of writers from the Maghreb. In so doing, he puts a new focus on the issue of French as the «dominant language».

Transitivity And The Choice Of A Preposition In Any Language, Valerie Hascoet Jan 2000

Transitivity And The Choice Of A Preposition In Any Language, Valerie Hascoet

Other Resources

This thesis examines the question of determination of transitivity for a verb through a comparison of processes involved in English and in French. It takes in several theories belonging to the area of the syntax-semantics interface in order to understand how a predicate is construed as either intransitive or direct transitive or indirect transitive in either language. The study focuses on a corpus of verbs that present different argument structures in French and in English. It analyses the various factors that determine the choice of a transitivity status for a given predicate. It discusses whether that process of determination lies in …

Léon-Gontran Damas Et Saint-Denys Garneau: Poésies Et Figures De La Violence, Kanaté Dahouda Dec 1999

Histoire Et Fiction Dans Léon L'Africain D'Amin Maalouf, Najib Redouane Jan 1999

Histoire Et Fiction Dans Léon L'Africain D'Amin Maalouf, Najib Redouane

Autor De L'Excentricité De Phileas Fogg Et Du Captaine Nemo, Peter Schulman Jan 1997

Autor De L'Excentricité De Phileas Fogg Et Du Captaine Nemo, Peter Schulman

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

Vers Une Typologie Des Actualites Televisees Sur L'Abc (Australian Broadcasting Corporation - Australie Occidentale) Et Sur France 2, Maryleen C.H. Troubat

Theses : Honours

This thesis is a comparative study of the evening news on the public television channels ARC (Western Australia) and France 2. It also investigates the notion of television news in Australia and France. Television news has become a dominant source of information for most people in developed countries. We propose to study the characteristics of the evening television news on ARC and France 2 and examine news as specific discourse and the different ways it is transmitted to the audience. This work also explores the use of sources, reports and interviews. Our study also uses recent French theories in discourse …

Pronouncing French Names In New Orleans, Clifton Meynard, George Wolf, Michele Bocquillon, Debbie De La Houssaye, Phyllis Krzyzek, Lisbeth Philip

Foreign Languages Faculty Publications

This article, based on 984 interviews with bearers of French names in the city of New Orleans, investigates the use of the notion of pronunciation as a device by which speakers manage their talk. The investigation proceeded primarily by eliciting ways in which people employ devices for talking about talk in everyday communicative interactions, as a means to manage various types of communicational phenomena and to deal with communication difficulties emerging from a clash of phonetic traditions. The result is a definition of pronunciation in terms which are used by a majority of speakers. An appendix gives a list of …
