Obligado y ofendidos, a seventeenth century comedia by Don Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla, is a play suited to hold the interest and attention of the reader capable of understanding the written Spanish word. However, up to the present time, there has been no edition of this drama designed especially for students, with their particular problem in mind. Therefore, the present text of Obligados y ofendidos is intended for use by students of Spanish on the high school or college level normally prepared to read the language.

From the preceding discussion it may be seen that Rojas is worthy of consideration with the rest of the dramatists of Spain. However it becomes apparent that while recognizing his importance, critics have not analyzed in detail his works in their entirety. For this reason the problem arises as to what justifies Rojas' position among six foremost Golden Age dramatists. Throughout the history of Guatemala, poetry has been a constant outlet for the spirit of the land. Guatemalan writers share the Latin Americans' inclination toward expression in verse which has been called the "enfermedad latinoamericana." Rare is the educated Guatemalan who at least in his youth has not contributed his quota of verse. Guatemalan poetic proclivity is the more apparent when one considers that the poetry of that land has been produced by only a small part of the population since the non-contributing indigenous peoples form the majority of the three million inhabitants.

Unamuno, therefore, had a twofold purpose in writing novels. He wanted to delve into the soul of the person to find out what struggle caused his personality, and then he wanted to see how this struggle effected the individual's attitude towards death and eternal life.

The purpose of this study is to see how well Unamuno succeeded in carrying out these two central themes, first, intimately, in his own character; second, remotely, in the character of his reader; and third, creatively, in the characters of his novels.

It is with the Post-Modernist group that we are concerned in this study, for it is in this direction that the poetry of Rafael Alberto Arrieta leads. The poetic expression of Arrieta is not, however, a conscious, deliberate rebellion against Modernism. Arrieta was born in the 1889; he therefore grew up under the influence of Modernism. The most formative years of his life were spent while Modernism dominated the world of poetry. Yet Arrieta had the literary integrity to express his own personality in spite of the prevailing influences.

The Portuguese usage of the preposition following verbs has been thoroughly studied by Francisco Fernandes in his Dictionàrio de verbos e regimes. However, the preposition required to supplement a noun or an adjective before a complementary infinitive has been virtually excluded from Portuguese dictionaries. It is the purpose of this thesis to present a study, together with examples, of this important phase of Portuguese syntax.

To obtain this information, thirty-one works of nineteen modern Portuguese and Brazilian authors were carefully examined, and the prepositional usage was recorded. The following general conclusions are based upon approximately 4,000 examples collected.

Pérez Galdós undoubtedly will be remembered as the greatest novelist of nineteenth century Spain, but if one had asked him his occupation, the response probably would have been "a dramatist." Galdós had dramatic tendencies from the very beginning of his literary career, and his greatest ambition was to write for the theater.
