Relatively little has been written concerning Mariano Azuela and his works in comparison to critical material on Mexican authors. Since Azuela is the recognized novelist of the the Mexican Revolution, it is necessary that intimate acquaintance with the man and his works be made in order to understand the problems, feelings, and aspirations of the Mexican people immediately prior to and during the Revolution.

The aim of this thesis is to examine critically the novels of Azuela in view of the known facts of the Mexican Revolution principally as they touch upon the religious, social, economic, and political aspects.

He has attempted to make certain comparisons of superstitions and beliefs prevalent in New Mexico with those of other regions which abound in popular superstition, particularly those prevalent in Spain and Mexico. When the average person thinks of the Czech settlements of Nebraska, he is apt to have in mind the large numbers of this national group who are located in the comparatively centralized area of Douglas, Saunders, Butler, Saline, and Colfax Counties. Few seem to realize that one of the larger of the Czech settlements of the state is to be found in Knox County, a section considerably removed, and having relatively few contacts with the Czechs in the above-mentioned counties.

One reason may be that he has continued to write after his own manner and ideas despite the initial reception accorded him by Spanish critics and audiences. Another cause may conceivably be that his theatre differs strikingly in outward appearance from that of the Golden Age. A third reason is undoubtedly that Benavente has come to be popular with his own people after a patient struggle against their indignation, and he has been recognized as a writer of first importance.

It is not the purpose of this study to consider the influence of Don Quixote on World Literature in general, but rather to describe the imitations of Don Quixote in the works of three famous authors. These authors have each created a pair similar to Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and each shows in his creation the influence of Cervantes' characters. These authors represent three different national literatures and three successive centuries.
