This study deals with the history of New Mexico as it affects the crafts. It covers the general history and techniques of spinning, loom development and weaving. It considers designs of 17th century Spain and Colonial Mexico and the misinterpretation of designs in New Mexico. It deals primarily with the Spaniards and their descendants who will hereafter be referred to as New Mexicans. Linguistic influences and changes are noted whenever they apply to the crafts. It is the plan of the study to classify the dramas under the following heads: (1) lesser social plays based on moral proverbs, (2) more important plays distinctly social, (3) more important plays generally conceded to be free of any overt attempt to moralize, and (4) other minor plays. Their descendants and the descendants of the settlers who came north from Mexico clung to the precedent established by their ancestors; they sang old songs, composed new ones, and passed them down to their children by word of mouth transmission.

Introduction. In the study here presented an attempt has been made to gather as many decimas as possible in one source so that they will be easily accessible for future reference and study and to give a few pertinent remarks concerning them.

The material presented in appendix 1 does not represent all of the decimas known in New Mexico, but is probably sufficient in quantity to ensure a sample of all types. Though a Valencian by birth Blasco Ibanez came of a family who emigrated from the old Kingdom of Aragon whose people were the unconquerable in the days of Napoleon's Spanish Campaign. He was born on January 29, 1867, and thus had a childhood which was profoundly impressed with such events as the Carlist War, the Bourbon Abdication, the Brief reign of the "Princeling of Piedmont," the short-lived Republic of Castelar, and the bourbon Restoration. These events doubtless exerted considerable influence over certain phases of his life.

The tragedy Hakon Jarl the Mighty was completed toward the latter part of the year 1805 at Halle, Germany. The author, Adam Gottlob Oehlenschlaeger, wrote the work in Danish and later on translated it into German. It was first published in November, 1807, in Nordiske Digte, and was presented for the first time at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, January 30, 1808. Frey, known to Wilhelm H. Blumer of Allentown, was chosen to accompany Niklaus Durst and Fridolin Streiff on their trip to select and purchase land for the Glarus Emigration Society. The following letter comprises the first official report on the emergence of New Glarus. It was written by Judge Niklaus Durst, and signed by both Durst and Fridolin Streiff, several days after the group of colonists arrived in Wisconsin. Dürst wrote beautiful but complicated German. The original letter is archived in the Pulverturm at Schwanden, Canton Glarus, where many of the records of the Emigration Society are kept. This translation, by Peter Etter and Leo Schelbert, tries to adapt to Dürst' s style as much as possible without making the letter too difficult to understand. It is based on the …

For years Diirst's notebook has been archived at the Wisconsin State Historical Society in Madison. After Robert Elmer inspected it he provided a copy to Leo Schelbert who transcribed the difficult to read text and translated it literally. Urspeter Schelbert then revised the transcription, and the translation was adapted to his emendations. Italic numbers were added to each entry in the English translation for reference from the accompanying article on Durst' s trip to the United States.
