Barcelona's Public Market System: Bridging The Gap Between The Global And The Local, Larissa Hernandez
Barcelona's Public Market System: Bridging The Gap Between The Global And The Local, Larissa Hernandez
Master's Theses
The unique public markets of Barcelona are poised for a thriving future based on their theoretical and empirical grounding and commitment to both global influences as well as the local traditions of trade and consumption. This global/local balance keeps the markets relevant to contemporary consumers and allows them to have a well-rounded experience as they shop. In this paper, I trace the history and previous incarnations of public markets through the Greeks, Romans and Arabs, as well as consider the European situation and its fluctuations over the centuries. I then uncover the debate surrounding globalization, its influence on the food …

Beyond Anti-Semitism, Rebecca Gould
Beyond Anti-Semitism, Rebecca Gould
Rebecca Gould
Focusing on internal contradictions within the Israeli left, this essay considers the impact of the historical legacy of anti-Semitism on everyday thinking about Israel and the Palestinian territories. Contesting the view that to criticize Israel is to engage in anti-Semitic defamation, it offers an historical account of how Israel's actions in the West Bank have come to be immunized from conscientious criticism. It also documents how progressive media outlets in contemporary Israel have silenced or otherwise marginalized Israel's most active critics.

In the year 1860 I decided to emigrate to the United States of North America. I traveled to Basel to sign a contract with Mr. Zwilchenbart.3 Our party grew to ten people, four were from the Canton Aargau and six from Canton St. Gallen.

Appendix: Meeting Of The Veterans In Luzern, January 29, 1899
Swiss American Historical Society Review
A gathering of Swiss veterans of the American Civil War was suggested by Colonel Emil Frey. He was a Veteran of that War, having served as major in the 82nd Illinois Infantry Regiment, and he was taken prisoner in the battle of Gettysburg. He returned to Switzerland where he pursued a successful career in public life. Between 1892 and 1897 he was a Federal Councilor (Bundesrat), that is a member of the seven-member executive branch of the Swiss Government, being in charge of the Military Department. In October 1898 Captain Casimir Muri sent out a call to …

Adventures In North America According To My Own Experiences: My Military Service, Andreas Hanselmann, Ch. H. Im Bundt, Richard Blatter, Translator, Leo Schelbert, Editor
Swiss American Historical Society Review
I came back to New Orleans. There one talked about nothing else but war. The northern and southern states rebelled against each other. In the latter, Negro slaves were used in the cotton- and sugar cane plantations. The others abhorred the trade with people and worked toward the abolition of slavery. For many years the Democrats, as the friends of slavery called themselves, were successful in winning for one of theirs the presidential election that took place every four years and thereby dominated the federal government.

Adventures In North America Based On My Own Experiences: My Trip To California, Andreas Hanselmann, Ch. H. Im Bundt, Richard Blatter, Translator, Leo Schelbert, Editor
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Now that the war was finished, I had to look for a job. I decided to go first to New York. I didn't take along the many and large mattresses on which I had rested during four years, nor could the "guards" that used to jump in the grass follow me, and they probably have not escaped their certain death. So I came to New York. It was twelve at night. We could leave the boat only the next morning because all inns were closed. Thus I headed to town in the early morning hours and saw a sign that …

Adventures In North America Based On My Own Experiences: About Gold Digging, Andreas Hanselmann, Ch. H. Im Bundt, Richard Blatter, Translator, Leo Schelbert, Editor
Swiss American Historical Society Review
In the year 1848, 25 men traveled from New York to California. They had heard that gold had been found there, and they wanted to try their luck. When they sailed along the Mexican coast, they stopped at a small town to get drinking water. They saw a brickyard, and one of the group named Gehn was observing curiously how bricks were formed. The owner of the brickyard now asked him, whether he was somehow familiar with the business. Gehn answered that he was a professional brick maker and had worked since his youth in his father's brickmaking business. The …

Adventures In North America Based On My Own Experiences: My Home Voyage, Andreas Hanselmann, Ch. H. Im Bundt, Richard Blatter, Translator, Leo Schelbert, Editor
Swiss American Historical Society Review
After having spent two dozen years in California, I decided to return to my home country Switzerland. I arrived in New York by the shortest way. Several times I had read in newspapers about the "Hotel St. Gotthard," and I thought that this must be a Swiss hotel. So I went to that place. When I entered the dining room the landlady welcomed me with friendly words. I answered: "The way you talk you must be from the Toggenburg." "Yes, I am," she replied, "I am born Alpiger from Alt St. Johann, and my husband is a citizen from the …

Prefatory Note, Richard Blatter
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Andreas Hanselmann (1825-1905) had his roots in the Toggenburg, a valley belonging to the Canton St.Gallen and situated in the northeastern part of Switzerland. Born in 1825, he left his wife Susette and his two children-a son who died early and a daughter Frieda, born 1856 in Wattwil-in 1860 and went to the United States. In those days, the dominant textile industry in the Toggenburg was hit by an economic crisis that led also others to emigrate, but Hanselmann offers no explanation for his departure. Being caught by the Civil War in New Orleans shortly after his arrival, he enrolled …

The Modern Language Association’s (MLA) urgent appeal for the restructuring of the undergraduate language curriculum, “Foreign Languages and Higher Education: New Structures for a Changed World,” emphasizes a need for language departments to enrich their upper-division course offerings beyond the traditional literary studies model in order to attract and retain broader interest in language learning among students with diverse academic interests and needs. Citing the National Science Foundation’s 2003 Survey of College Graduates, it stresses that only 6.1% of undergraduates whose primary major is a foreign language later achieve doctorate degrees and concludes that departments should provide upper-division language courses …
Little Germans On The Prairie: Colonial Thought And German Settlement Of The United States In Wilhelmine Youth Literature, Maureen Gallagher
Little Germans On The Prairie: Colonial Thought And German Settlement Of The United States In Wilhelmine Youth Literature, Maureen Gallagher
Maureen O. Gallagher
In German youth literature set on the North American frontier, authors construct a claim to a German America. In these texts Germans are presented as most worthy citizens and the ideal colonizers: moral and tolerant, racially superior, disinterested, establishing a colonial claim to the Americas, in particular to the North American West.
Marco Bellocchio's Buongiorno Notte And The Language Of Terrorists, Cosetta Gaudenzi
Marco Bellocchio's Buongiorno Notte And The Language Of Terrorists, Cosetta Gaudenzi
Re-visioning Terrorism
This essay investigates Marco Bellocchio’s Buongiorno, notte (2003), a movie which exploits language and soundtrack to fictionalize and revisit the historical 1978 kidnapping and murder of the Christian Democrat President Aldo Moro by the 1970s Italian left terrorist group Brigate Rosse. As I demonstrate, Bellocchio relies greatly on the language and soundtrack of Buongiorno, notte to convey his negative response to the BR’s kidnapping and murder of Moro, as well as to come to terms with his own political and cinematic past.

Totalitarian Threats And Colonial Geography: The Politics Of Defining Terrorism In Beauvoir, Camus, And Dib, Araceli Hernandez-Laroche
Re-visioning Terrorism
Can terrorism be justified as a means for social justice? Can a so-called democratic state engaged in indiscriminate bombardments of civilian populations be held accountable for terrorist acts? How is political crime different from senseless murder? Can and should genocide be defined differently from a civil war operation? Who has the right to decide for the life or death of others?
This paper compares important representations in prose and theater of moral dilemmas that plagued war-torn Europe and France during the Spanish Civil War, World War II, and the Algerian War. I analyze the complexities and divergences of existential writers …
Rebels Without A Cause: Youth And Terrorism In Contemporary Italian Film, Simona Bondavalli
Rebels Without A Cause: Youth And Terrorism In Contemporary Italian Film, Simona Bondavalli
Re-visioning Terrorism
This essay explores the representation of Italian terrorists in recent generational films set in the 1960s and 1970s. While they foreground the protagonists’ youth and celebrate it as a historically new condition, these coming-of-age narratives typically present radicalism either in terms of youthful idealism or youthful error, with corresponding nostalgic or revisionist approaches that obscure its ideological basis. An analysis of the selective generational appeal deployed by four recent films through narrative structure, style and casting highlights an alternative reading of the post-ideological approach to the representation of terrorism in the 21st century.

This thesis focuses on the fictional writings of three contemporary Brazilian authors: Ana Paula Maia, Luiz Ruffato and Marcelino Freire. In selected works of the three above-mentioned writers, I examine the intertwined representation of social violence and denial of citizenship. The thesis inquires into the way literature depicts and critiques socio-economic difference and proposes — within the fictional realm — modes of reclaiming agency through written expression. Specifically, I examine how violence is broached in contemporary Brazilian literature - what are the aesthetic tools employed to portray violence, why they are used and what is the ideology and the discursive …
Die Zukunft Gehoert Dem Ingeniuer: Herman Soergel's Attempt To Engineer Europe's Salvation, Ryan Bartlett Linger
Die Zukunft Gehoert Dem Ingeniuer: Herman Soergel's Attempt To Engineer Europe's Salvation, Ryan Bartlett Linger
Masters Theses
Herman Sörgel devised a plan, beginning in 1927, to usher in a new era of peace and prosperity for the whole of Europe. Atlantropa was his answer to the perceived threats that the European people faced from international competition, overpopulation, and lack of resources. The plan would have resulted in the lowering of the Mediterranean Sea and the ultimate creation of one continent comprised of the former Europe and Africa. Though the plan was never implemented, it poses a fascinating model through which historians may reconsider the time period between the end of the First and Second World Wars.
