Exploring Adolescent Grief, Mental Health/Illness, Coping Mechanisms, And Recovery Through Young Adult Literature ‘Problem’ Novels, Kailey Gabriel Jan 2018

Exploring Adolescent Grief, Mental Health/Illness, Coping Mechanisms, And Recovery Through Young Adult Literature ‘Problem’ Novels, Kailey Gabriel

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Since the turn of the century, mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and self-harm have been on the rise in teenagers. A teen’s first confrontation with a traumatic event, such as violence or grief, often exacerbates symptoms of mental illness in those already susceptible. The problem novel, a subcategory of Young Adult literature, has emerged as a potentially therapeutic cultural form for teenagers coping with illness and/or trauma. In a world that still heavily stigmatizes mental afflictions, it can be helpful and affirming to read about characters dealing with similar issues through the comfortable distance of fiction. Readers can identify …

Immortality In Literature: The Goddesses Of Ancient Greece, Rebecca Lozier

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The following text explores the connections between the mythology of ancient Greece and the society from which it arose. Women are often at the heart of classical myth despite being oppressed members of society. Understanding the role of women in mythology provides insight into women's treatment in ancient Greece. It follows the lasting influence of ancient Greece and its mythology through to the Romantic Period. Understanding how poets used myth, provides understanding into the culture's beliefs about women.

Shifting Binaries: American War Fiction From Vietnam To Iraq, Elizabeth Eggert Jan 2018

Shifting Binaries: American War Fiction From Vietnam To Iraq, Elizabeth Eggert

English Honors Projects

This project builds off historical and literary war theories about binaries to interrogate whether the nature of war writing has changed as war has changed. I analyze two Vietnam and two Iraq war novels for the ways they challenge or uphold the binaries of war, and how these binaries shift over time. I argue that the breakdown of a coherent ‘enemy’ due to the increase of a diffuse and decentralized insurgent force increasing from the Vietnam War to the Iraq War begins to collapse the binaries of ally versus enemy and combatant versus noncombatant in the countries in which the …

Esther Reed's Political Sentiments And Rhetoric During The Revolutionary War, Kennedy Harkins Jan 2018

Esther Reed's Political Sentiments And Rhetoric During The Revolutionary War, Kennedy Harkins

Honors Undergraduate Theses

In 1780, during the final leg of the American Revolutionary War, Esther Reed penned the broadside “Sentiments of an American Woman.” It circulated in Philadelphia, persuading citizens to turn over their last dollars to the cause. Reed’s broadside called to action the women of Philadelphia; they knocked on doors, campaigned with words, and stepped firmly into the “man’s world” of politics and revolution. Reed’s words were so effective that women in cities across the colonies took to raising money as well. Using New Historicist and feminist reading strategies, this study compares and contrasts Reed’s rhetoric to Thomas Paine’s Common Sense …

Reading Engagement: The Impact On Student Identities And Achievement, Tara Lyn Thompson Jan 2018

Reading Engagement: The Impact On Student Identities And Achievement, Tara Lyn Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

Across one school year, in which I coached a fourth-grade teacher, she and I took an inquiry stance investigating how we could come to understand the reading identities kids held relative to Stephens’ (2013) list of characteristics of effective and efficient readers. We also sought to understand how we could help kids develop, sustain, or extend their reading identities and how those identities relate to a generative theory of reading. What impact would our actions have on the kids? What shift, if any, would there be in their ability to comprehend grade level text? There were 11 students in the …

Revisiting A Handmaid’S Tale In The Age Of Post-Truth Politics, Rachel E. Trnka Jan 2018

Revisiting A Handmaid’S Tale In The Age Of Post-Truth Politics, Rachel E. Trnka

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Fictional narratives, like the recent Hulu adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s 1986 dystopia novel A Handmaid’s Tale and the original novel, offer a way to explore real anxieties people face in the age of post-truth politics and the Trump presidency. More specifically, these two texts are worth exploring in relation to Trump’s misogynistic comments and the current assault on women’s rights. Both the television series and book blur the lines between fiction and reality. The loss of women’s rights in the television series and novel mirrors real fears some women today face about losing their reproductive rights in the United States. …

The Hero's Journey Through The Hobbit, Leah Underwood

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This project begins with a journey that moves from the familiar to a place of adventure and trials through an instructional unit on the Hero's Journey and The Hobbit. It begins with a rationale for the selection of both the unit topic and the selected text which is followed by the standards covered, prior knowledge needed, and a map of the unit. Following this are the four weeks of lesson plans and the instructional materials the students would use. The project finishes off with a reflection on the process and the struggles and lessons learned along the way.

From Fear To Reverie: Incidents In Isolation In The American Wilderness, Serhiy Metenko Jan 2018

From Fear To Reverie: Incidents In Isolation In The American Wilderness, Serhiy Metenko

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis looks at Nineteenth Century American adventure narratives to examine the role of the wilderness. This thesis centers on a motif of isolated characters in the wilderness and analyzes the various techniques nineteenth-century authors use to project the psyche of their characters. The selected Nineteenth Century authors: Washington Irving, Charles Brockden Brown, Edgar Alan Poe, Harriet Spofford, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Herman Melville root America’s identity in the wilderness. They emphasize its power on the human psyche as positive, restorative, inward-looking, and divine. This thesis argues that these authors portray the wilderness as a protagonist that needs to be preserved …

Writing Indigenous Identity In Herman Melville And Joseph Conrad's Polynesian And Malay Archipelago Novels, Catherine L. Black Jan 2018

Writing Indigenous Identity In Herman Melville And Joseph Conrad's Polynesian And Malay Archipelago Novels, Catherine L. Black

Dissertations and Theses

The thesis of this paper is that cross-cultural writing can be done with the right methods of communication, such as engaging narrator and education—or simply sensitive, imaginative writing. Herman Melville and Joseph Conrad’s five books set in the Polynesian and Malay Archipelagos—Typee and Omoo and the Malay Trilogy (Almayer’s Folly, An Outcast of the Islands, and The Rescue)— are used as master models of how to write indigenous characters with rich characterization in pivotal roles, even circa 1846 and 1896. The unique perspective and technique by which they did this is explored, a technique and perspective not …

Seeing Whiteness: The Progression And Regression Of White Identity In Four Post-Civil War Literary Generations, Sara N. Stone Jan 2018

Seeing Whiteness: The Progression And Regression Of White Identity In Four Post-Civil War Literary Generations, Sara N. Stone

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores the concept of white identity as seen in literary works in four time periods: Reconstruction, the Great Depression, the Civil Rights Movement and the 21st century. It examines the work of Mark Twain, William Faulkner, Kurt Vonnegut and contemporary writers George Saunders, J.D. Vance, and Jonathan Franzen. It seeks to understand patterns in racism, white nationalism, and white supremacy as part of the fundamental construct of the literary white man, and follows the evolution of that construct over time.

The Inevitability Of Decay: Disability In Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man And The Sea, Dominic Robin Jan 2018

The Inevitability Of Decay: Disability In Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man And The Sea, Dominic Robin

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

To many, Ernest Hemingway embodies a certain image of "masculinity," one centered around ability and physical performance. Such a narrative ignores the truly complicated and dynamic shape his understanding of the body took. Through an analysis of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea, I examine the form this ideology took in his later life, focusing particularly on Hemingway's evolved understanding of the body. Through this research, a more nuanced picture of Hemingway emerges, one that recognizes the complicated and dynamic nature his view of the "able" body took.

intended for an audience of professional translators. Data came from the proceedings of the

Canadian Parliament (the Hansard), which are published in French and English. Passive

sentences were collected from the output of the Stanford Parser. Animacy was found to be a

significant factor in …

Haitian Votes Matter: Haitian Immigrants In Florida In Local Politics And Government, Bobb Rousseau

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This qualitative study investigated perceived barriers to the incorporation of Haitian immigrants in Florida into local politics and government. The theoretical framework for this study was Marschall and Mikulska's theory of minority political incorporation to better understand the political ambition of Haitian immigrants to emerge as candidates and voters toward achieving electoral success and a substantive representation. The research question addressed the lived experiences and perceptions of Haitian immigrants related to barriers to their political mobilization at district, state, and federal levels. A phenomenological study design was used with open-ended interviews of 10 Haitian Americans who lived in Florida for …
