This essay evaluates and critiques the studies of Chinese imperial law in line with Edward Said’s proposition of ‘Orientalism’. It identifies three major stages: the classical legal Orientalism, emphasising the heterogeneity of Chinese and Western laws based on Western values; the ‘neo-legal Orientalism’, stressing the homogeneity of the two by taking Western culture also as the assessment standard; and Oriental legalism, seeking Chinese subjectivity with Chinese perspectives and resources. The changes of the paradigms in assessing the legal culture in pre-republican China are related to the general intellectual transformations in the contemporary world. Learning a language can be hard. Learning a language that contains tones to convey meaning is even harder. This dissertation presents a novel methodology for creating a language practice using augmented reality that has never been used before. The design of a new app in AR and non-AR versions can evaluate the same practice methodology. This methodology was applied to new software and was examined in regard to the importance of this software. Although the study results are inconclusive, progress has been made in answering research questions on the effectiveness of AR versus non-AR and the reliability of peer assessment. …

馬禮遜（1782–1834）是第一位來華的基督教傳教士及牧師，一生致力宣揚基督福音和研究漢語。馬禮遜的最大成就，莫過於研究當時粵語和粵音。1815年，馬禮遜出版《通用漢言之法》，當中記載338個以粵音標注的漢字，可謂有史以來第一本記下粵方言語音資料的文獻，其重要性不言而喻。1828年，馬禮遜出版《廣東省土話字彙》，進一步記錄當時粵音和粵各地區方言的資料，更是奠定馬禮遜於早期粵語及粵音研究的重要地位。

本論文先介紹研究緣起、粵音概況及研究方法，之後介紹及分析馬禮遜《通用漢言之法》和《廣東省土話字彙》的音韻系統，與現今粵音的聲母及韻母作比較，既集中研究與展現二百年前的粵音概況，亦可令讀者思考粵語及粵音應當何去何從。

An overview of how friendship has been represented and assessed in the Confucian tradition, and particularly in classical Confucian texts such as the Analects and the Mencius. Themes covered include the relationship between the family and friendship, the ambivalence towards friendship in imperial China, and the connection between friendship and the Confucian ideal of personal cultivation. The chapter finishes by exploring novel conceptions of friendship and human relatedness suggested by the Confucian tradition.

Hanbok is the traditional fashion of South Korea, and literally translates to “Korean clothing.” Once worn every day, today hanbok is reserved for special occasions and holidays; however new “modern” versions of the attire are becoming more and more popular for everyday wear. This new iteration of the traditional clothing created a new vernacular of Korean nationalism and “Koreanness” through the incorporation of modern fashion trends and traditional Korean aesthetics. From 1945 onward, post-war artists in Japan encountered two interrelated challenges: to both adjust to the war’s aftermath, and also to create a new visual language which expressed new ideas and emotions. For women artists in Japan, this time of distinct culture change allowed for a re-defining of their role in the art community as well as society. The People’s Republic of China (PRC) has maintained a long and strenuous history of relations with its western-most province of Xinjiang (Xīnjiāng, 新疆). Relations with ethnic minorities in the region have been significantly influenced by changes in both domestic and foreign policy. Since the founding of the new Chinese state under Mao Zedong, the Uyghur (Wéiwú’ěr, 维吾尔) population of Xinjiang have seen vicious swings to and from radical domestic policy.

This thesis applies the glocalization theory to a comparative study of the Disney theme parks in the United States and Shanghai, China. Taiwan can be found about 100 miles off the southeastern coast of China in the Pacific Ocean. It consists of a main island and many smaller surrounding islands. Before the arrival of the Dutch, the only inhabitants of the island were the Taiwanese indigenous peoples, also known as the Formosan people, Austronesian Taiwanese people, or Gaoshan people, who had been there for thousands of years. This thesis investigates the representation of asexual individuals in the works of Murata Sayaka, Kawakami Mieko, and Kamatani Yuki, all of whom are contemporary Japanese writers that portray near–suffocating social environments in their depictions of modern-day Japan. Their texts illustrate the augmented demands Japanese society places upon a cross-section of asexual and neurodivergent individuals. Despite the thematic and character–related similarities in their works, I argue that each author presents a unique interpretation of how these asexual individuals interact with—and try to integrate into—wider Japanese society and mainstream culture. 「跨性別」指所表現的行為與社會期待下的原生理性別不一致之個體，猶如將對的靈魂裝在錯的身體裏。本文選取了三部以跨性別為題材的當代電影分析亞洲地區跨性別人士的現況，包括由王育麟導演執導的台灣電影《阿莉芙》、李駿碩導演執導的香港電影《翠絲》和陳立謙導演執導馬來西亞電影《迷失安狄》，三地在性別平權的進度上亦有較大的差異。三位導演都是當地的華人，以華人的角度出發，更深入分析和呈現每一個地方的民眾對跨性別的看法。本文通過分析電影敘事與電影語言如何帶出亞洲跨性別人士所需面對的困境和狀況，包括在宗教、家庭、職場等方面細看跨性別人士在不同階段所面對的困難。

封建禮教的束縛與女性意識 : 從《浮生六記》中的陳芸談起, Yiu Man Chow

本文集中以女性意識的角度，闡發《浮生六記》裡陳芸的傳統女子形象、現代性表現及兩者的兼容性，藉此剖析傳統禮教對女性形象的束縛及現代女性意識1的覺醒。除前言以外，第二節「封建禮教下的女性角色」，主要論述傳統社會對不同女性角色的影響；第三節「個性解放的女性意識及推動因素」，寫陳芸女性意識覺醒的體現及推因素；第四節則以「女性意識萌發與封建社會的對立」為題，分析陳芸所處社會的限制，剖析封建禮教對女性意識的迫害。第五節為結語。全文最後歸結出《浮生六記》裡，陳芸在封建社會下確有女性覺醒的萌芽，雖難抵傳統教育與社會環境的侵蝕，也對女性實現自主獨立具有積極意義。

論「黛玉之死」的苦和悲劇美, Lim Long Ng

林黛玉為《紅樓夢》重要人物之一。小說中黛玉出自書香世家，生性聰敏，自小讀書識字，極具詩才。母親早逝，由外祖母接至賈府照顧，和表兄寶玉一同在賈府長大，展開悲劇的一生。《紅樓夢》為一部悲劇著作，以「情」為主題，寫大觀園一眾女子的故事，曹雪芹於小說中暗示「千紅一哭」、「萬豔同悲」，令主題統一，故作者安排黛玉一個「悲」的結局，在藝術手法上為合理的。黛玉因情轉世，亦因情而亡，作為小說中的悲劇人物，於情節安排以及主題發揮上，扮演重要角色。

黛玉最終的結局，因版本不一與「紅樓夢未完」之故，歷年來一直備受爭議。然而，各家之言，皆一致認為黛玉的生命，始於不幸，終於虛無，黛玉承受的痛苦多而深，於小說的悲劇美學上，存有很高的價值。本文以「黛玉之死」為題，首先綜合歷來各學者之說法和版本，選其最佳者作研究對象，繼而從情節和詩詞中，分析黛玉的身世、體質、性格、命運，以窺探其早夭的原因與死亡的痛苦。

論蘇偉貞女性眷村小說「封閉」的意義, Yee Lam Tseng

眷村第二代作家蘇偉貞在八零年代因作品多以男女情愛為主，被批評缺乏討論現實問題。筆者認為，蘇偉貞雖然表面上聚焦男女情慾的問題，但是其小說的核心關懷實爲探討第一代眷村女性在臺灣歷史中「失語」的困境，並藉此思考第二代女性放下歷史包袱、勇於走出「封閉」眷村的可能性。故本論文主張蘇偉貞從其眷村小說《有緣千里》開始探討眷村內部的女性議題，並在臺灣解嚴後出版的小說中《離開同方》正式為族群的女性發聲。

本論文以這兩部小說作為研究對象，首先討論蘇偉貞寫作時的「封閉」狀態，並延伸分析小說中兩代眷村女性所面臨的困境。第三章將藉分析兩代女性「封閉」的內心世界，探討第一代眷村女性在臺灣歷史中「失語」的困境以及第二代女性逃離的慾望。第四章則反思兩代眷村女性如何通過追尋自我，尋找走出這個「封閉」世界的意義。

In contemporary China, demographers estimate that 30 million men are single because there are simply not enough women in the Chinese population, and the 2020 Chinese census shows that there are 34.9 million more men than women. These men are called guanggun, which can be directly translated to “bare sticks/branches,” a slur that indicates a lack of marriage and sex. In this project, I demonstrate that guanggun’s singlehood marks them as the marginalized at the intersection of heteronormativity, patriarchy, globalizing capitalism, and pronatalist governmentality. In a highly heteronormative and patrilineal culture, guanggun are branded as abnormal/incomplete. However, because …

This article investigates the way in which Cuban literature reflected on indigenous people during the early half of the nineteenth century and uses the symbol of the Amerindians to demonstrate a moral disjuncture between them and the colonizer. This paper explores the concepts of "Border Culture" and "Borderlands" by Gloria Anzaldúa in Soy la Avon Lady and Other Stories, Homicide Survivors Picnic and Other Stories, by Lorraine López and the novel Mijito Doesn’t Live Here Anymore by Jaime Martínez. The paper argues that the Mexican American character in the southeast of the United States lives in the "Borderlands" and practices a "Border Culture" because they don't follow the traditional stereotypical role of the Mexican American character within the literary canon of both the dominant culture and Chicana/o literature.
