This project demonstrates materials developed over a three-year period in Chinese international schools for the teaching of U.S. history to ESL learners. It includes an outline for a two-year curriculum with a regular weekly cycle, as well as a close look at strategies and tested activities intended to facilitate understanding of this complex topic and to encourage students to participate beyond passive reception. Specific cultural issues of teaching U.S. history in China are discussed, including issues of ideology and censorship.

The Creation Of Daoism, Paul Fischer

This paper examines the creation of Daoism in its earliest, pre-Eastern Han period. After an examination of the critical terms "scholar/master" and "author/ school", I argue that, given the paucity of evidence, Sima Tan and Liu Xin should be credited with creating this tradition. The body of this article considers the definitions of Daoism given by these two scholars and all of the extant texts that Liu Xin classified as "Daoist." Based on these texts, I then suggest an amended definition of Daoism. In the conclusion, I address the recent claim that the daojia /daijiao dichotomy is false, speculating that …

“Lone Wolves and Stray Dogs: The Japanese Crime Film, 1931–1969” is a continuing collaboration between the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University and the National Film Center of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Ever since the success of the French crime film Zigomar in 1911, the Japanese film industry has produced numerous movies depicting criminals and the detectives who try to apprehend them. This project focuses on how the household saving ratio changes from 1978-2013 in China and what factors caused the changes. Based China’s household saving rate changes from 1953-2000 by using the framework of the life-cycle hypothesis, Modigliani concluded that the rate of growth income and the demographic structure are the major determinant of the rate of private saving. This project attempts to extend Modigliani’s research using the data after 2000 and take changes of Chinese policy and additional factors into consideration. This course focuses on underlying religious and philosophical assumptions in the most recent works of Haruki Murakami (1949-), 1Q84 in three volumes and Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage. Murakami is the most popular and widely read novelist in Japan today and a major literary figure worldwide. He cites as his two sources for inspiration in writing 1Q84 George Orwell and the AUM religious cult, responsible for bombing Tokyo subways with sarin gas in the 1990s.

A Hometown in Heart (Maeumui gohyang, 1949), written by Ham Sedeok (1915-1950) and directed by Yun Yonggyu (b.1913), is said to be the first Korean Buddhist film. It depicts Buddhism in a remote mountain region without even electricity. The main character of the film, an orphaned child monk, must decide what to do with his life. This paper argues that the central aspect of the Buddhism-related symbols represent Korean tradition and that the supporting characters represent socio-political forces in post-liberation Korean society just after liberation, pulling the young generation of Koreans in various directions. 本文考察清代笑話集《笑林廣記》中的僧人笑話，發現專講僧人的「僧道部」中色 情笑話的比例竟只僅次於專論夫婦行房笑話的「閏風部」。本文將僧人笑話分為兩大層 次，第一層是僧人整體的，同時較空泛的負面形象；第二層再細分為內外兩層，先進入 笑話嘲笑僧人的具體內容；再來是數量最多，也是所選笑話中的核心部分：以大量色情笑話，攻擊僧人觸犯淫戒。本文嘗試從兩方面分析僧人的色情笑話。一，從巴赫金（Mikhail Mikhailovich Bakhtin）對「狂歡」的理論來解釋，僧人所守的戒律與性分別象徵極端的高尚與極端的低下，色情笑話將高低兩者的地位拉向一致，達至「狂歡」的效果；二，從晚明至清代的社會狀況來與笑話作對照，當中包括時期相若的文學、法律等，以觀照笑話這種為求惹人發笑，必有其誇大之處的文體究竟是否毫無社會價值。

對於屈原作品中的意象分析，不少學者均只局限於討論王逸《楚辭章句》中所提到的。屈原的作品中，常出現有關「道」和「路」的描述，姜亮夫《楚辭通故》：「道與路兩字為考見屈子思想之重要用詞。」然而，在著作或論文方面，均未有深入討論「道路」意象的象徵意義及其重要性。

本文以〈離騷〉、〈九歌〉、〈天問〉、〈九章〉、〈遠遊〉、〈卜居〉和〈漁父〉為研究範圍，當中的「道」和「路」共出現四十七次。從「道路」意象去分析屈原的作品，可見屈原所賦予的意義是較其他意象為多，並非如美人象徵君主般單一。「道路」並非單指現實中、眼前所見的路，屈原是把對現實的不滿與理想寄託於「道路」之中，包括望君主明察、望奸佞盡去和望重歸郢都，這些都是屈原對現實的不滿和批評。

在現實與理想的矛盾之間，屈原依然始終如一，堅守其正道，不會因應現實而有絲毫的改變，就如先秦時期道家所言的「道」一樣，本質是獨立不變的。因此，從「道」和「路」意象分析屈原作品，更可了解屈原貫串全文之不變決心及其忠君愛國精神。

張系國、倪匡科幻小說寫作特色比較 : 以《星雲組曲》及〈衛斯理系列〉為例, Cheuk Sum Wan

張系國（1944年）與倪匡（1935-）同生於中國大陸，前者1949年後遷台再到美國，後者在1957年後來到香港發展。然而，二人同因科幻小說而為人熟悉，其中《星雲組曲》、〈衛斯理系列〉為他們的代表作。於中、港、台的影響力至今仍不減。

有見及此，本文會以《星雲組曲》〈衛斯理系列〉為研究對象，嘗試以科幻觀、主題、叙事與讀者群為方向，比較兩者的特點，以及分析這些特點出現及為何受到推崇的原因。

統觀而言，張系國視科幻小說為嚴肅文學，會依從基本的科學精神設出相對仔細的世界觀，為的是幫助表達人文的主題，讀者以知識份子為主；倪匡則視科幻小說為消閒文學，在作品中加入武俠、偵探等元素，科幻元素變成故事中的「謎底」或「危機」，以增加閱讀趣味，甚至認為不必依從基本的科學概念。而這些不同，基本上與二人的背景以及「雅、俗」文學取向相關。

同時，張、倪的作品雖然雅俗取向不同，但同屬科幻小說。這種包容性也反映了科幻文體有別於其他如言情、武俠等文類。

兩岸的桃花源記 : 論蔣曉雲《桃花井》中的想像與失落, Ka Lo Lau

蔣曉雲與吳念真、朱天心、張大春等人同期出道，二十多歲時曾經在台灣文壇中嶄露頭角。當年朱西甯讀過她的作品後，因她文字中的那份只屬於中文的美感，以及張愛玲散文裡的幽默與詼諧，令朱氏肯定她為「張愛玲、潘人木之後，『無人可及』的言情小說家」，夏志清亦稱她為「另一張愛玲」。

儘管蔣曉雲事後已否定自己的作品有模仿或繼承張愛玲，這種說法卻足以看到文學界對她的肯定。可惜的是，1980年，正當蔣曉雲聲名鵲起之際，她卻毅然放棄自己在文壇上的名氣和地位，到美國留學，及後在當地工作、結婚、生子。

2011年，暌違文壇三十年的蔣曉雲帶著作品《桃花井》 回歸，除了是因為反對自己寫作的父母的逝去及作為她最忠實讀者的侄女的鼎力支持外，更有其歷史及個人原因。蔣曉雲的歸來，不再像過去的作品《隨緣》、《姻緣路》般冷眼旁觀現代適婚男女的錙銖必較，亦無意再度破譯才子佳人傳奇，而是把目光放置於糾纏近半世紀的兩岸關係，嘗試在二十一世紀重新觀照上世紀那些歷史洪流中的「老靈魂」的生平和處境，並從「外省」小人物的身世開始推演一齣兩岸共同架設的荒謬殘酷的家庭劇場。

以下，本論文將會以《桃花井》為中心，分析當代台灣返鄉文學中，外省人所面對的難題與原因，和外省第二代在歷史問題下如何自處，以及在原鄉失落的情況下，這些外省族群對於烏托邦的想像與失落。

《說文》「宀」部字研究, Cham Sum Yip

「宀」這個部首，我們從小至大都會寫過，看似熟悉，但是每當談及它的讀音和意義，大多數人也會出現啞口無言，無言以對的反應，只知道稱之為「寶蓋頭」。自古迄今，从「宀」的字，可謂數以百計。《說文》「宀」部，收錄合共71個从「宀」的字，當中有很多更是鮮見於現代，甚至已經不再使用。本文遂以《說文》「宀」部作為研究基礎，對《說文》「宀」部字進行收錄考證及同義詞考析兩個方面的研究，以進一步暸解「宀」與从「宀」的字。

Wrestling With Tradition: Japanese Activities At Amache, A World War Ii Incarceration Facility, Zachary Allen Starke

I employ archaeological analyses, archival research, and oral histories to investigate traditional Japanese practices that were performed at Amache, a World War II Japanese American incarceration facility. I argue that these inter-generational practices helped to bridge a cultural gap that existed between several generations of Japanese Americans. For many incarcerated Japanese Americans, their first exposure to many traditional activities occurred during incarceration. The resulting social environment incorporated aspects of Japanese, Japanese American, and mainstream American influences, all of which were adapted to conditions during incarceration. Similarly, archaeological analyses allow for the investigation of traditional practice features. These provide evidence regarding …

This article investigates that relationship between e’gao (parody using web-based media) and Chinese civil participation. E’gao (恶搞 EUH-gow) uses videos, images, and text based campaigns that use humor to remove fear of political commentary and action. By detailing the development of China’s internet use, and the creation of the e’gao movement, I argue that e’gao removes the fear of participating in campaigns and movements, which criticize government policy and actions on both local and state levels, by using humor and anonymity of large online numbers. In China's urban metropoles, the hukou system of household registration regulates one of the largest movements of people in human history. While rural-urban migrations are reshaping societies worldwide, the migrants who make up a great portion of urban China's low-wage labor force and burgeoning population face unique legal and social challenges. Although the trajectories of their migration do not cross international boundaries, most are legally prevented from ever gaining the within China's hukou system of household registration. This article describes how hospitals, universities and church entities worked together to reach the community with healthy lifestyle options. Basically the collaboration worked through four foundational activities: sharing of resources, training of health workers, operating lifestyle centers, and using the existing union governance structure. the collaboration provided outreach services in the following ways: lifestyle programs, wellness expo, health and gospel evangelism, mass media, and cooperation with NGOs."

阮大鋮是明代著名的戲曲作家，著有《春燈謎》、《燕子箋》、《雙金榜》、《牟尼合》等傳奇戲曲，極富才華。然而，明朝和明季的史書裏，阮大鋮品格卑劣；除此之外，一些文學家亦大力渲染阮大鋮負面形象。因此本文欲分析史書與文學如何建構阮大鋮的形象。

本論文分作五部份︰第一為引言。第二則以《明史》、《石匱書后集》、《小腆紀傳》及《所知錄》四部史書的作者生平、筆法分析阮大鋮的歷史原型。第三部份則細讀《樵史通俗演義》、《桃花扇》、《姑妄言》、〈阮大鋮祭文〉四部文學作品，並從作者生平、寫作意圖方式探究阮大鋮的文學形象。第四部份會比較歷史原型與文學形象之異同，及研究其關係，並了解兩者之間如何互相影響，建構出阮大鋮於社會形象。第五部份為結語。

香港「戰後嬰兒」經歷1966年天星小輪加價示威、1967年暴動，眼見當時市民生活質素追不上發展速度，開始對殖民地政府提出不滿，成為「躁動的一代」。六十年代的反叛在七十年代則發展為「對抗的一代」。當六十年代的年青人逐漸成為主導的消費者，他們的本土意識隨之走進主流，為他們服務的流行文化產品亦愈多回應社會狀況，延續「對抗性」的自覺。

於六十至七十年代紅極一時的依達，其作品多次被改編為電影，反映當時香港流行文學與電影之緊密互動。他亦是香港都市言情小說的先驅，作品風格陰柔細膩，善寫都市男女的愛情，後期更以另一筆名「韋韋」專寫奇情小說，進一步探索香港六十至七十年代日漸開放的社會裡的情與慾，意識大膽。然而，由於依達作品乃是流行文學，雖極富參考價值，學界仍少有對其作深入探討。

有見及此，本文將以性別及性向為切入點，剖析依達（及韋韋）在六十至七十年代出版及改編的三部小說與電影──《藍色酒店》（1966年出版，1968年改編）、《舞衣》（1971年出版，1974年改編）和《面具》（1972年出版，1974年改編），思考依達當時作品中的性別問題。本文第一章導論介紹依達及其小說的時代意義，第二章簡介依達，第三章則討論六十至七十年代改編依達小說的影壇狀況，釐清當時文本外之因素。由第四章開始，本文將緊扣上文，轉入作品內分析原著與電影中「相同的男女、不同的命運」，連同第五章「凝視男女的不同方式」，歸納出電影因受業界環境所限而「修正」的性別觀。第六章則探討依達原著與電影中被受同情的「同性情愫」，了解當時作者及香港對同性關係愈見開明的態度。

本文用作家專題之方法，以「六十至七十年代的香港」為橫，以「性別」為縱，借助依達三部小說與改編電影所呈現之不同性別觀，旨在發掘六十至七十年代依達對性別前衛的態度，折射一面香港風景。

《荀子》疑問代詞研究, Hoi Lan Wong

《荀子》作為先秦諸子散文的代表之一，其文字反映了戰國末年的語言特色。觀乎學術界對《荀子》的語言學研究，少有切入《荀子》的疑問代詞系統作出專門研究。《荀子》中的疑問句數量甚多，而疑問代詞乃其表達疑問語氣的重要手段，集中研究《荀子》的疑問代詞，實有助我們解讀《荀子》。

本文嘗試集中研究《荀子》中有關疑問代詞的運用，歸納各疑問代詞的用例，並仔細分析它的用法與特色，從而完整地呈現《荀子》疑問代詞系統的面貌，作為上古中期疑問代詞使用潮流的一個引證。

全文共分為五章：

一、緒論：簡介歷來《荀子》語言學研究概況，述明本文研究目的、研究方法以及章節安排

二、界定疑問代詞的概念，為《荀子》中的疑問代詞分組

三、梳理與詳細分析《荀子》中各疑問代詞的用例

四、統計《荀子》中各疑問代詞的使用頻率，並作出對比分析

五、結論：總結本文前三章的研究發現，歸納出《荀子》疑問代詞的使用特色

向光忠轉注說發微, Sin Yuen Loo

在漢字理論研究發展史上，人們對六書中轉注的討論最為熱烈，自前賢後學，紛爭不休，對轉注的本質仍未達成一致的見解。關於轉注的本質，從許慎定義「建類一首，同意相受」和「考」、「老」一對例字，我們不能斷定轉注為「造字之法」還是「用字之法」。若將轉注放在「造字之法」的語境中來考察，筆者認為向光忠對轉注的定義最合乎許慎原意。經過本文論證，向先生的轉注說能周全地解說轉注字形、音和義三方面的特質，而且的確能應用在一對例字和全部「同部互訓」的字例之上。就向先生對轉注的定義，筆者未發現任何紕漏之處。

本文旨在以向先生對轉注的解說為基礎，依次就轉注的本質、定義、例字特質作探析和說明，指出其說具說服力的地方。並將向先生的轉注說應用在《說文》「同部互訓」之字上作全面考察，並甄別其說中的考證試作補充。

人妻出軌的意義 : 論《金瓶梅》潘金蓮、李瓶兒、宋蕙蓮和王六兒, Ying Tsz Leung

蘭陵笑笑生《金瓶梅》[1]於明萬曆年間成書。[2]當時的社會環境已減少明初禁慾風氣的影響，縱慾風氣瀰漫整個社會。《金瓶梅》於此時代背景下成書，不少也受此現實氛圍影響。文本中的男女關係複雜，其中有不少人妻出軌的情節，與明初提倡寡婦守節風氣相對，成為本文着意討論的重點。本文共三章，以《金瓶梅》中潘金蓮、李瓶兒、宋蕙蓮和王六兒四位人妻出軌的故事作切入點，探討四婦出軌行為背後的意義。第一章以文本分析四婦犯姦原因，從對情慾和物慾的渴求，以及她們對禮教的反抗情況兩方面切入。第二章以《金瓶梅》中的旁觀者與參與者對人妻犯姦事件的取態，以此作其他角度，觀察文本內的社會氣候對犯姦事件的接受。第三章則配合《金瓶梅》借宋喻明性質，從明中葉社會多種包括商業社會的興起、縱慾風氣和心學的提倡等轉變，分析社會主流風氣轉變與出現人妻出軌事件的關係，以見明中葉成書的《金瓶梅》，當中人妻出軌的不倫事件，如何受社會氣候左右而產生。
