After Gui-Mao education system enforced in 1904, preparatory courses lasted and became an organic part of modern Chinese higher education. As the predecessor of First-year College Chinese in the Republic of China, "preparatory Chinese courses" indicated the early form of College Chinese. Liu Bannong's "Teaching of Practical Writings", finished in 1917 and published in the next year, was the earliest research article and experiment report in modern Chinese as a discipline. Due to the impact of political and cultural contexts, Chinese textbooks in Singaporean secondary school experienced a long and tortuous process of localization. In the early British colonial era and the Japanese occupation of Singapore, almost all Chinese textbooks in Singapore were imported from China and entitled guowen. From the end of World War II to 1979, with dramatic changes in China and Malaya, textbooks were primarily used to promote the consciousness of localization under the concept of Malayalization. Correspondingly, the publication of Chinese textbooks tended to be autonomous and their titles changed to zhongwen, yuwen or huawen. From 1979 …

This article discusses the influence that A Dream of Red Mansions had on Xu Zhenya's novel writing. In his early years, Xu Zhenya wrote sixty Ci-poems about A Dream of Red Mansions. These Ci-poems indicate his understanding of characters in the novel and the love tragedy of Baoyu and Daiyu. When writing novels, he always uses A Dream in Red Mansions as an exemplar. Although Her Sacrifice and The History of Tears are autobiographical novels, Xu imitates A Dream in Red Mansions in terms of characterization and plot. To many Western readers, Lafcadio Hearn's Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things, published in 1904, is a seminal work of what they perceive as Japanese kaidan literature. The fact that this work was first published in English for Western readers reveals the transcultural as well as translational nature of this literary genre that is called kaidan in the English-speaking context. The question of the origin of kaidan therefore makes it an interesting case of translation, since this book, in effect, is at once a translation and an inscription of the origin of Japanese kaidan literature in the Western context. …

In the 1940s, due to the lack of systematic education, university students had an imbalanced command of Chinese language and literature. Li Jinxi, a pioneer in Chinese language and literature education, published a series of papers on the ideas of "Tong Chou" (integration) and "Jiu Ji"(remedy) in Chinese language and literature education in tertiary institutes. "Integration" refers to the standardization of the number of essays in Chinese textbooks, focusing on improving reading and writing skills. The paper is a rethinking of writers' ethnic identity by, first of all, summarizing the basis on which ethnic writers are often categorized, namely by blood, nurturing, professed recognition or inclination, and analyzing the defects of such classification. Following this analysis, it discusses the subjective part of ethnic writers' identity selection, focusing mostly on the often neglected elements of identity — its performativity and its temporality; it argues that we need to abandon essentialism by embracing the theory of social constructionism. To better understand factors that influence individuals’ motivation to engage in physical activity, this study aimed to identify the motivational profiles among the Chinese university students, compare the motivational profiles between genders, and explore whether satisfaction of various psychological needs vary with different motivational profiles. Two thousand and twenty-two Chinese university students completed a battery of self-report questionnaires assessing motivation regulation and psychological needs satisfaction. Three motivational profiles were identified for both genders. The overall patterns of the motivational profiles for both genders were similar. However, males (44%) were more likely than their female counterparts (19%) in self-determined profile group. …

The purpose of the current study was to explore how positive youth development and family functioning were related to unintentional and intentional exposure to online pornography in Chinese adolescents. A total of 1401 secondary school students (mean age=12.43) participated in the study. Findings suggested that positive youth development and family functioning were associated with lower exposure to online pornography. In particular, higher levels of spirituality, social competence, mutuality and communication were associated with lower levels of both types of exposure to online pornography. Discussion focuses on the importance of promoting positive youth development and family functioning as protective factors against …

Adopting a qualitative methodology, views of the students on a subject on service leadership were examined. Students taking the subject (n=153) were invited to use descriptors and metaphors to describe their experiences about the subject. Regarding the descriptors given by the students, most of them were positive in nature. Similar positive findings were obtained for the metaphors. The findings are generally consistent with those studies using the same methodology reported in the literature. The General University Requirements (GUR) is a component of the new 4-year undergraduate program at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). This study examined students’ views and experiences of the GUR using a qualitative methodology. Written comments of 240 freshmen, sophomores, and senior-year students with reference to open-ended questions on their memorable experiences in the GUR study were collected. The qualitative findings suggested that students generally had positive views on the GUR in terms of its widely adopted active and experiential learning pedagogy, useful and attractive contents, caring teaching staff, and rich learning outcomes. 延安時期，婚戀問題作為與農村傳統習俗對抗的焦點，以及獲得「群眾」支持的重要武器，被賦予了一種無法迴避的政治使命。1941年，中國共產黨在延安創辦大型中央機關報《解放日報》，其副刊亦成為延安時期極具影響性和權威性的文藝陣地。本文以延安《解放日報》副刊（1941.5.16-1947.3.27）的婚戀小說為主要研究對象，同時加入延安時期未在《解放日報》副刊發表，但影響較大的小說，如：、《小二黑結婚》等，作為論文的補充與對照向度。嘗試解決以下問題：一、延安時期的婚戀小說對五四時期的婚戀小說有何主動與被動的改變；二、探析作家如何思考「性」、「經濟」、「政治」、「家庭」在革命中的位置，各種政治、文化、思想因素出於何種理由、以何種形式滲入到婚戀故事之中，又是如何建構出一種新的主體想像。

This article investigates the representation of Buddhist values through the interplay between drama and documentary in two of Kore-eda’s films—After Life (Wandafuru Raifu, 1998) and I Wish (Kiseki, 2011). It will argue that the spiritual aspirations of these two films is a product of their nondualistic treatment of a documentary and dramatic style of filmmaking.

Reverse glass paintings, a form of Chinese export art, were extensively traded in the nineteenth century. Several examples are on display in prominent Thai Buddhist monasteries in Bangkok. King Nangklao of Siam, Rama III, encouraged Sino-Siamese trade that brought Chinese objects and images to nineteenth-century Siam. The ideals of accretion and abundance characteristic of Thai Buddhism and the sinophilia of Rama III facilitated the construction of “Chinese-style” Thai temples. Glass paintings with scenes of the Pearl River Delta, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, auspicious objects, and bird-and-flower compositions were installed in temples and inspired new directions in Thai mural …

I wrote this mini-guidebook of my hometown of Philadelphia. Otherwise known as the city of brotherly love. I wrote this for anyone in Japan who are thinking about traveling to Philadelphia to sight-see. I listed information about a certain food that Philadelphia is famous for (Cheese Steaks), and recommended a place were they can find and try them out. I also talked about two other locations that usually come to mind when you think about Philadelphia: Love Park, and the Liberty bell. I discussed some of the history of these two locations, and why they are famous.

Tim Oakes’ (1998) concept of touristic modernity accurately describes how the Chinese national discourse surrounding tourism, as both a tool for economic growth and nation-building, has shaped what the local reality has become for many towns and villages in the peripheral regions of China, especially those with large populations of ethnic minorities. Specifically in the Dali Bai Autonomous Region, foreign tourism followed by nostalgia-fueled domestic tourism has transformed Dali into a commercialized tourist destination, which has begun to spill out to other towns around the lake such as Xizhou. Despite Japan’s emphasis on its ethnic homogeneity, there actually are ethnic minorities in Japan. Most of foreign residents in Japan came recently, but a group of Koreans, which is called Zainichi, has been living in Japan before World War II. “Zainichi”, literally means “residing in Japan,” with a connotation of impermanence. It could be Zainichi Chinese or Zainichi Americans, but the term almost exclusively refers “to a population of colonial-era migrants from the Korean peninsula that settles in the Japanese archipelago and their descendants” (Lie, 2008, x). This dissertation looks at the effects of media exposure and language ideologies on Mandarin speakers’ acceptability judgments. Although there is a long-standing tradition against citing media exposure as a source of language variation, I show that 1) media exposure to a non-local perceptually salient variant can make people more likely to rate non-local linguistic features as grammatically acceptable, and 2) media exposure shapes people’s language attitudes—a new alignment of attitudes is emerging among the millennials on the mainland.

Data were collected through an online survey consisting of grammaticality judgments, matched-guise tasks, open-ended attitudinal questions, and demographic questions. The data show …

Lu Xun initially read fictions as a historical phenomenon while currying the ancient Chinese fictional writings, and his lectures on the topic showed that he intended to take the perspective of nationalist critique.
