Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Mike Gunderloy, creator of Factsheet 5, and co-author of The World of Zines, offers the following definition of perzines:
A personal zine, or perzine, is the most intimate kind of zine. It allows the editor/writer many freedoms, not the least of which is spouting off about anything or nothing-in-particular without worrying about editorial policies and other rules of regimented periodicals. It's also a way of corresponding with any number of people simultaneously while maintaining an aura of intimacy and friendship. And something else to remember when you're reading (or writing) a perzine -- because this intimacy …

Organization, Outreach, And Optimism: Getting A Project Up To Full Speed, Kate Culkin
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
The Harriet Jacobs Papers began as an offshoot of Jean Fagan Yellin's research for a biography of Jacobs and her edited edition of Incidents. For several years, work on the papers project was sporadic, as Dr. Yellin and a series of undergraduate and graduate students surveyed archives for material, accessioned and transcribed documents, and began research on the annotations. The pace changed dramatically in the summer of 2002 when the project received funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Gladys Kriebel Delmas Foundation and secured a contract to publish the book with the University of North Carolina …

A Unique Perspective: Documentary Editors And Biography, David B. Mattern
A Unique Perspective: Documentary Editors And Biography, David B. Mattern
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Documentary editors are attracted to and often bemused and irritated by biography (and biographers). They have a unique perspective on this genre that I'm going to explore through the prism of my own experience as a biographer and a documentary editor. I've been an editor for nearly twenty years and in that time have written or collaborated on four biographical projects-a biography of Revolutionary War general Benjamin Lincoln, a selected letters edition of Dolley Payne Madison, and two children's biographies of Dolley and James Madison.

The Future Of University Presses, Janet Rabinowitch
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
The "future of university presses" is an open-ended topic, and I don't pretend to be a crystal ball gazer, so I will focus my remarks more directly on trends and issues that are currently preoccupying my university press colleagues, developments that will have a strong influence on what our future is likely to be.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Susan Rosowski, Adele Hall Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, died on November 2, 2004, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Professor Rosowski was general editor of the Willa Cather Scholarly Edition, director of the Cather Project and the Cather International Seminar, and editor-in-chief of Cather Studies. She was the major force in creating and sustaining all of them. Over some twenty years, she was instrumental in securing Cather's place as a major twentieth century author. She won the University's highest awards for both teaching and scholarship, a rare achievement, and her professional life modeled …

This article considers the combination of game play and narrative which combine to produce cross-gender identifications in video games, a previously underexamined potential for the production of alternate genders, one which calls into question the stability of gender, particularly masculinity, as a construct.

The Editor As Biographer, John P. Kaminski
The Editor As Biographer, John P. Kaminski
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Editors are really biographers of sorts almost all the time when editing ~ the papers of their subjects. All meaningful characters who appear in documentary editions are usually identified in footnotes and head notes, biographical directories, introductions, and sometimes even in indexes. No one knows the subject-the person being studied-as well as the documentary editor. Day in and day out editors pore over their documents intently, attempting to make sense of the interrelationships among all the historical participants. As part of their responsibility, editors explain the intricacies and uncertainties in these relationships.

Towards A New Form Of Opera Production, David Smith, Frederick Bianchi
Towards A New Form Of Opera Production, David Smith, Frederick Bianchi
Publications and Research
Opera has historically been one of the most expensive and complex art forms to produce, limiting its accessibility and viability, especially for smaller companies and touring productions. This paper proposes a new model for opera production that utilizes emerging technologies—such as synchronized digital music systems, real-time projection, and programmable lighting—to create high-quality operatic experiences at significantly reduced cost. By leveraging tools like the Sinfonia system for musical timing and dynamic visual elements controlled by digital protocols, opera can be made portable, repeatable, and customizable. The model aims not to replace traditional opera but to supplement it with efficient, flexible systems …

What We Would Have Done Differently Now That It Is Too Late, Louis R. Harlan, Raymond W. Smock
What We Would Have Done Differently Now That It Is Too Late, Louis R. Harlan, Raymond W. Smock
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
We might as well begin on a note of candor by admitting the worst error we ever made, for of all the things that we would have done differently this surely heads the list. On the errata page of volume 8 appears the note: "Volume 4, p. 309, n. 1. The man wrongly identified as Robert Brown Elliott [a black man] was actually William Elliott, a white man. The letter to BTW, Apr. 25,1898, was from Rev. G. M. Elliott of Beaufort, S.C." Not only had we confused a black man with a white man and another black man, but …
The Canons Of Selection, John Y. Simon
The Canons Of Selection, John Y. Simon
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Although the article touched on many issues of concern to historical editors, I propose to focus on the scope of documentary editions and to explore the issue of selection of documents for printing, hoping to discover whether this can be analyzed as more than a struggle between editors and government officials eager to distribute federal funds more broadly.
Sotheby's Sale Of John Marshall Letters, Charles F. Hobson
Sotheby's Sale Of John Marshall Letters, Charles F. Hobson
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Recently the John Marshall Papers project accessioned a series of nine autograph letters signed from the chief justice to Bushrod Washington, written between 1814 and 1821. Let me state at the outset that the letters disclose no secret loves, no shady financial dealings, no bizarre personal habits. Candor also obliges me to confess that their discovery was not the result of years of painstaking research, of pursuing leads that brought me ever closer to the trunk in the attic of a decaying Virginia mansion. The story behind the acquisition of the letters is not without interest, however, and even a …
"What Good Are They Anyway?": A User Looks At Documentary Editions Of Statesmen's Papers, Daniel Feller
"What Good Are They Anyway?": A User Looks At Documentary Editions Of Statesmen's Papers, Daniel Feller
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Historical editing has come far in recent years. Editors now have their own organization; they have an ever-stricter set of standards and, as of this year, a handbook codifying those standards. What was once an avocation has become a profession. Yet one cannot overlook that documentary editions have failed to meet some of the expectations first held out for them. The "bloodless revolution in American history" promised us a quarter-century ago from the publication of great statesmen's papers has so far proved not only bloodless but undetectable. Ironically, just as that revolution was being proclaimed, a very different-and far from …

Mary Robinson Hunter: Reminiscences Of Her Life In Brazil, Evelyn M. Cherpak
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
As a Latin Americanist with a specialty in Women's History, I was eager ft to edit a diary kept by an American woman in South America, so I was pleasantly surprised when I called the Newport Historical Society and spoke to the curator of manuscripts who told me that the Mary Robinson Hunter diaries in their collection covered her residence in Brazil fromi 1835 to 1848. I promptly visited the Historical Society, read the journals, found them fascinating, and began my part-time editing project.
The diaries consist of six volumes in which Mary Hunter wrote nearly every day. Each entry, …

"The Most Important Scholarly Work": Reflections On Twenty Years Of Change In Historical Editing, Michael E. Stevens
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Twenty years ago, at the first annual meeting of the Association for Documentary Editing in Princeton, New Jersey, Arthur Link stated that documentary editing is "the most important scholarly work being done in the United States, and, if well done, it will be the most enduring." Last year, the distinguished historian Edmund S. Morgan echoed Link when he wrote in the Wall Street Journal that the 154 volumes produced by the Founding Fathers editions "stand as the single most important achievement of American historical scholarship in this century."
Despite this high praise, Link's and Morgan's opinions are not universally held. …
