Steve and Anita Canfield helped the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Turkey. They helped send blankets, coats, and washing machines to Syrian refugees. They were assigned to Frankfurt to assess refugee camps, soup kitchens, warehouses, and immigrant communities. The couple visited refugee camps and soup kitchens all over Europe to determine what was needed most by refugees.

The Canfields established the Friendship Center in Rome. The center offers classes in Italian, English, Italian, and a Red Cross course. It also has a gospel choir, a popular activity for primarily African refugees. The LDS Church has plans to …

Our goal is to offer a discussion to the international academic community and practitioners. Mapping Colonial Interdependencies In Dutch Brazil: European Linen & Brasilianen Identity, Carrie Anderson

In Dutch Brazil, the Brasilianen were essential allies to the West India Company. To maintain this critical alliance, the Dutch presented them with gifts of linen, a fabric in high demand. Representations of Brasilianen wearing linen garments were pervasive and include an image on Joan Blaeu’s 1647 map of the Brazilian Captaincies of Rio Grande and Paraíba. Traditional interpretations of these linen-clad Brasilianen prioritize a center/periphery model; in contrast, I argue that these pictured linens document the interdependencies between the WIC and the Brasilianen, a position supported by digital maps plotting Dutch/indigenous exchanges.

Magis Brugge: Visualizing Marcus Gerards’ 16th-Century Map Through Its 21st-Century Digitization, Elien Vernackt

Marcus Gerards delivered his town plan of Bruges in 1562 and managed to capture the imagination of viewers ever since. The 21^st century digitization project MAGIS Brugge, supported by the Flemish government, has helped to treat this map as a primary source worthy of examination itself, rather than as a decorative illustration for local history. A historical database was built on top of it, with the analytic method called ‘Digital Thematic Deconstruction.’ This enabled scholars to study formally overlooked details, like how it was that Gerards was able to balance the requirements of his patrons against his own …

University libraries across the country are investing in Digital Humanities and digital scholarship initiatives, providing support for research and teaching using digital tools and methods. Because digital scholarship offers scholars new ways to visualize and analyze their research, which communicates such research in new ways, it has clear lines of connection with scholarly communications. Combining these two unique areas of library activity offers opportunities for new library research by leveraging methods from DH to tackle problems in scholarly communications. The First World War Letters of H.J.C. Peirs is a digital history project that publishes the letters of a British World War I officer 100 years to the day they were written. By telling the story of one person, we have aimed to humanize a dehumanizing war and supported the effort to commemorate the centennial of the conflict. While the project was conceived with pedagogy in mind, it has grown beyond the letters and crossed boundaries: from the analog to the digital, from the classroom to the public, and from the archives to the field.

Access to research materials is an issue that cuts across disciplines and impacts most researchers as they gather information. For a digital scholar in need of a textual corpus, however, these challenges may be particularly acute. Those studying mid-to-late 20th century works may find themselves in uncertain territory with regard to copyright and licensing. Those studying historically marginalized populations may have trouble finding a pre-compiled corpus, or finding texts at all. Musical “Covers” And The Culture Industry: From Antiquity To The Age Of Digital Reproducibility, Babette Babich

This essay foregrounds “covers” of popular recorded songs as well as male and female desire, in addition to Nietzsche’s interest in composition, together with his rhythmic analysis of Ancient Greek as the basis of what he called the “spirit of music” with respect to tragedy. The language of “sonic branding” allows a discussion of what Günther Anders described as the self-creation of the mass consumer but also a reflection on the ghostly time-space of music in the broadcast world. A brief allusion to Rilke complements a similarly brief reference to Jankelevitch’s “ineffable.”

Computers have been extremely useful in humanity’s quest for knowledge, performing calculations and other strenuous tasks in seconds. For a computer to perform the tasks, it requires a specific set of instructions, or code, to tell it what to do. These series of commands and instructions are strict, in that any syntactic error results in faulty, or zero functionality. IPHS 300: AI for Humanity

An algorithm that can learn an optimal policy to execute trade profitable is any market participant’s dream. In the project, we propose an algorithm that does just that: a Deep Reinforcement Learning trading algorithm. We design our algorithm by tuning the reward function to our specified constraints, taking into account unrealized Profits and Losses (PnL), Sharpe ratio, profits, and transaction costs. Additionally, we use a short 5-month moving average replay memory in order to ensure our algorithm is basing its decision on the most pertinent information. We combine the aforementioned concepts to make a theoretical Deep Reinforcement Learning trading algorithm.

Computers are well suited to tasks such as data categorization and labeling. More challenging is data “generation”, a problem in which recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and more specifically long short-term memory networks (LSTMs) have made significant progress in the past few years. In this project, I train an RNN on a database of classical sheet music, and use it to generate new sheet music.

This project uses a K-Means Clustering algorithm. K-Means Clustering is a method of vector quantization, originally from signal processing that is popular for cluster analysis in data mining. K-Means Clustering aims to partition n observations into kclusters in which each observation belongs to the cluster with the nearest mean, serving as a prototype of the cluster. The example above has three clusters, and my project used four clusters, one for each LEED Certification. I
