This folder contains 3 documents. One is the Ninth Annual Catalogue of the Literary and Bible Training School in Nashville, Tennessee (later Trevecca College, Cummings’ alma mater). The other two, published in 1913 and 1918, are about the McCrum Slavonic Missionary Training School in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, which operated under the auspices of the Woman’s Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

The title of this folder may be somewhat inaccurate. It contains not “church conference materials,” but an essay on hymns, a brief handwritten letter to a Mrs. G. N. Shirey, and typescripts of approximately 10 sermons. Titles and texts include “Taking Offence at Christ” (Luke 7:29), “The Gospel Invitation” (Matthew 11:28-30), and “The Immortality of the Soul” (Job 14:14).

This folder contains one of Cummings’ “Our Weekly Message” newspaper columns and approximately a dozen letters written to or about him. They were composed between 1922 and 1968; topics include an invitation to become the pastor of a church in New Martinsville and several matters related to his hymnwriting work.

This folder contains 4 newspaper articles about members of Cummings’ family. There is a photograph of his grandson and great-grandson (Melville Homer Cummings III and IV) at the Cabell County courthouse on an unspecified election night; an article about Dr. Melville H. Cummings); an article about Lt. M. Homer Cummings, Jr’s experiences in Germany, including a visit to the Nuremberg war trials.

This folder contains approximately 40 newspaper articles about Cummings. The few that include identifying information were published in the Charleston Gazette, the Huntington Herald-Advertiser, and the Coalwood-Caretta News, with dates of publication ranging from 1935 to 1963.

The articles cover such topics as Cummings’ moves from Fayetteville to Williamstown and from Glasgow to Huntington, his 25^th and 50th anniversaries in the ministry, and his work as a composer of hundreds of hymns. The newspapers also published the complete texts of several of his sermons.

This dually authored first-person essay offers a narrative account of the far-ranging writing experiences of two well-established academics who, like many others working in higher education, contribute writing to mainstream publications as well as to scholarly ones. The essay considers the implications for professional and personal reputations when material targeted at one kind of audience is easily accessible by another through internet ‘context collapse.’ It argues for an inextricable connection between authorial ethics and the essential rigour of all good writing, and it encourages scholar-writers to invest their energies in nonscholarly writing for its value to society.

This paper explores students’ engagement in reading poems, examining data on their self perceptions of their confidence and competence in reading poems before, during, and after using the “I Notice” methodology as adapted from The Academy of American Poets’ unit plan, “Noticing Poetry” (Slaby, 2017). The data was collected over the course of a month from January 9 through January 30, 2018 and involved five classes of one hundred general English tenth grade students across three teachers’ classrooms at Shanghai American School’s Puxi High School Campus. The Qualitative Report

Antinatalism, a relatively recent moral philosophical perspective and ideology that avows “it is better not to have ever existed,” has spawned a new social movement with an active presence in social media. This study draws on the discourse historical approach (DHA) to critical discourse analysis for offering a firm understanding as to how the collective identity of the Facebook antinatalist NSM is formed. The findings from the analysis of the situated interaction among the NSM’s members demonstrate that collective identity is far from a knitty-gritty concept, but a dynamic schema that includes a plethora of micro-interactions. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate how public blockchains offer a greater degree of censorship resistance over traditional web-based information broadcasting mechanisms, and a comparison of existing options. Public blockchains present a means to mitigate censorship from nation states through both a broadcasting and data storage mechanism. They are costly to attack and difficult to remove from the public due to their distributed and accessible nature. Content management systems (CMS), a phrase that is defined pretty much how it reads--they are systems that manage digital content. If you have worked within a library’s archives, special collections, history and genealogy department, or within museums, you have probably used one either on the front end or managed digital collections on the backend. For this use case, I will share a pilot project using a newly developed content management system, Omeka S, for an undergraduate History class’ digital humanities projects.

Visualizing The Decline Of The Corset Business, Iris Finkel

The corset defined a woman’s silhouette for nearly four hundred years. It continues to fascinate and inspire new ways to study its place in culture. Taking a digital humanities approach, my project encompasses visualizations of metadata from advertisements for foundation garments in Harper’s Bazaar, Ladies’ Home Journal, and Vogue from 1905 through 1929. These visualizations represent the marketing behavior of corset manufacturers, a well-established group of businesses that benefited from the industrial revolution to produce and sell a type of garment that held a constant place in women’s wardrobes.

This paper explores the potential for rigorous pedagogical scholarship to complement developments in digital art history (DAH). In addition to introducing ideas and methods that characterize scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL) in higher education, we focus on two major themes: how digital tools and techniques can support robust scholarship of teaching and learning in art history (SoTL-AH) and ways that SoTL-AH can be used to evaluate and demonstrate the impact of DAH projects in the classroom and the public realm. Our goal is to encourage greater exchange between these two emerging fields that can together advance art historical study.

The years between the collapse of Reconstruction and the end of World War I mark a pivotal moment in African American cultural production. Shush: A Creative (Re)Construction stems from work conducted during a sabbatical in fall 2017. The audio piece, Shush Me Awake, is a composition that explores the shush as a performative act. The accompanying framing essay uses an autoethnographic approach to provide a contextualized look at the composition process for this piece, while simultaneously situating it within existing scholarship in library and information studies on the image of the librarian and stereotypes. The composer notes provide additional technical details about the audio piece itself.

This document includes work-in-progress reports submitted to the Library of Congress as part of the Aida digital libraries research team's work on Digital Libraries, Intelligent Data Analytics, and Augmented Description: A Demonstration Project. These work-in-progress reports provide a snapshot glimpse, as well as underlying rationale and decision-making, at various points in the development of the project and its machine learning explorations. Reports cover explorations on historic newspapers, minimally-processed manuscript collections, materials digitized from physical originals and those digitized from microform surrogates, and investigate challenges related to image segmentation and document zoning, classification, document image quality analysis, metadata generation, and more.
