COVID-19 Graphic Design: Data Visualization and Information Design

This data visualization project draws from Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec’s book Dear Data: A Friendship in 52 Weeks of Postcards. After thorough research and note-taking from given and discovered resources, students were asked to respond to the novel coronavirus and the outbreak of its affiliated illness, COVID-19. As designers, students were given the responsibility to deliver information about the current culture while also acting as a participant to history — a primary” source. The object was to document history while also allowing for moments of positivity in the midst of such anxiety and uncertainty.

This poster will present an overview of our proposed project related to the Grand Lake St Marys archive, as well as the initial local history findings. The objective of our broader project is to create a publicly accessible archive (including newspapers, magazines, historical documents, photographs, maps, oral histories, diaries and letters, and ephemera) related specifically to Grand Lake St Marys and other regional history. The purpose of this study is to further the progress of annotating and sharing renowned Nebraskan author Willa Cather’s correspondence through digital means. I will do this by assisting the current team at the Willa Cather Archive with their project titled The Complete Letters of Willa Cather. The team behind this project has made about 1,600 letters available to the public, and they estimate that by 2022 over 3,000 letters will be accessible through their website. This is a handwritten letter from Misty Thomas-Trout to her Graphic Design I (VAD 411) students in March, sent the day before classes resumed following spring break. Initially, virtual education was a precaution, set to last for two weeks; however, it extended for the remainder of the term and the summer term. By the time the fall semester began in late August 2020, more than 5 million cases had been reported in the United States.

Following the handwritten letter is a typed version. The indents of the paragraphs reflect the way the letter appeared on paper.

"#Does This Count As Poetry?": A Genre Analysis Of Tumblr Poetry, Selena Cotte

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

This thesis canonizes “Tumblr poetry” as a distinct and separate genre of poetry, closely related to other digital poetry movements but ultimately its own phenomenon. Through historical analysis, the criticism against Tumblr poetry and digital poetry as a whole become familiar in a cycle of negative reactions to changing poets and changing audiences. Through textual analysis of poems found on Tumblr, common attributes and style changes are identified and contrasted with more traditional contemporary poetry, signifying a distinct formal shift. Finally, through a platform analysis, poetry communities on Reddit and Instagram are similarly analyzed and contrasted with Tumblr poetry to …

Appalachian Sermons In Marshall's Special Collections: Holdings And Research Possibilities, Robert Ellison

This presentation focuses on a collection of Appalachian sermons housed in the Special Collections Department at Marshall University. As the subtitle suggests, it has two main parts. The “Holdings” section provides a brief survey of these materials (the ministers represented in the collection, their denominations, when they served and where, and so on) and shows the work that has been done thus far to place the copyright-free materials online.

The “Research Possibilities” section gives an overview of the theories, topics, and approaches used in the field of sermon studies. I argue--as my colleagues and I have done in other projects--that …
