In 1950, an excavation was conducted at Nahal Shaham (map ref. unknown). The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by J. Ory. An arcosolium tomb was exposed, devoid of finds. The tomb was dated to the Byzantine period.

In October–November 1950, a salvage excavation was conducted in “Shikun Olim Alef” (the “Olim A” housing complex) in Tiberias (map ref. unknown), under the direction of B. Ravni. The excavation was carried out following the digging of pits for the buildings’ foundations. The remains of structures built of large basalt stones with a filling of small stones set in white plaster were discovered. During May 1949 and March 1950, salvage excavations were conducted on the El-Waqf hill in Bene Beraq, under the direction of Jacob Kaplan (map ref. unknown). The 1949 excavation was conducted following the discovery of the remains of ancient structures during foundations work for construction. On the slope of the hill an olive-press was unearthed. A round stone slab with a square hole in its center served as a base for the press. Adjacent to it, a big clay jar was found in situ, which served as a receptacle into which the oil flowed. In 1949, an excavation was conducted at the el-Haddar site in Tel Aviv, on the northern bank of the Yarkon River (map ref. 183/668). The excavation was conducted following the discovery of two tombs during sand removal by contractors. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by J. Ory. The remains of two simple trough graves, built within a frame of stones, were discovered on the site.

In July–August 1949, an excavation was conducted in west Jerusalem, in the area of the Arab village of Sheikh Badr that resided in Jerusalem until 1948 (map ref. 219/632). The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by M. Avi-Yonah. Two areas were excavated (c. 1750 square meters) in which seven probes were opened. The remains of several occupation layers were exposed, consisting of complex of horizontal and vertical rock-cut formations oriented north–south and east–west. In 1949, a salvage excavation was conducted on the eastern slopes of Khirbat Ibreiktâs, south of Hadera Railway Station (map ref. 1896–9/7037–40). The excavation was conducted following the construction of the new railway line. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by J. Ory. Four burial caves were exposed. The caves, which had been hewn on two levels of the kurkar slope, were damaged during the paving of the railway line. Several shaft tombs were discovered, which were filled with alluvium up to their ceiling.

In 1948 and 1949, excavations were conducted in Yafo, in the vicinity of St. Peter's Church, under the direction of P.L.O. Guy (map ref. 176/662). In 1948 the remains of a building were exposed, as well as millstones, many fragments of pottery vessels including lamps and pipes, and bronze rings, coins and an iron cannonball, apparently from the time of Napoleon. About 40 finds are registered in the National Treasures (pottery, metal, stone and glass vessels) most of which were dated to the Early Islamic period and the rest to the Hellenistic, Roman, Crusader and Ottoman periods. THE Roman conquerors who settled down to colonize a new province always tried to surround themselves with a new life reminiscent of the life they had left behind in Rome. When the Roman Empire began to expand northward beyond the Alps, first in Gaul and then later in Western Germany, among the many articles brought over by the Romans for their daily use and unknown until then in the new countries were objects made of glass which were part of the common paraphernalia of life in Italy.
