The Tomb Of Andraemon And Colophonian Burial Culture, Emily Brophy

The ancient city of Colophon is surrounded by extensive necropoleis from the Mycenaean, Geometric, and Classical periods of Greek history. Long before the necropoleis’ modern rediscovery, Pausanias described his encounter with the tomb of Andraemon in the 2nd century CE. Searching for Andraemon’s tomb using specific details from Pausanias’s Descriptions of Greece, as well as geographic and archaeological evidence, firmly places the tomb within a complex burial culture surrounding the site of ancient Colophon in modern-day Izmir, Turkey.

In the years 1965–1966 and 1968, three seasons of trial excavations were conducted in the Ein-HaYam neighborhood in Haifa, east of Tel Shikmona (map ref. 19697/74813). In 1967, an archaeological excavation was conducted in Samaria under the direction of A. Zigelman. According to information preserved in the archival file, tombs were uncovered during the construction of the access road to ancient Samaria. Twelve circular shafts were revealed, which undoubtedly served as burial installations. Some date to the Israelite period (Iron Age II), while others belong to the Roman period.

In January 1964, a salvage excavation was conducted in Kibbutz Hazore’a (map ref. unknown), following the discovery of a new tomb east of the tombs previously discovered during levelling the ground in the area of the kibbutz poultry farms. The tombs were dated to the transition period between the Early Bronze and Middle Bronze Age. This excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by V. Sussman.

In the spring of 1958, an excavation was conducted on the kurkar hill about one kilometer south of the Hadera West railway station (map ref. 1900/7040). The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, began under the direction of F. Berger and was continued under the direction of B. Isserlin. The excavation was conducted following the exposure of tombs during kurkar mining west of the railway. Some of the tombs were destroyed. In June 1958, an excavation was conducted at Kibbutz Mishmar HaEmek, following the discovery of a burial cave with loculi during the construction of a road between Mishmar HaEmek and Ein HaShoffet (map ref. 2133/7243). The cave was discovered on the southern slopes of Tel Shosh by the children of Mishmar HaEmek, who removed numerous glass vessels, metal artefacts and lamps that were dated to the Byzantine period.
