A salvage excavation c. 50 m northwest of Tel Shor uncovered a cemetery dating to the Persian period, as well as two Iron Age graves and one Roman-period grave that overlies a Persian-period cist grave. Pottery sherds dating from the late Chalcolithic period, the Early, Intermediate and Middle Bronze Ages and the Iron Age were also found, indicating settlement at the site from the fourth millennium BCE through the Persian period. Above the Persian-period cemetery stratum were a settlement surface and refuse heaps dating from the Hellenistic period. The Roman-period grave may indicate that the area continued to serve as …

Catacombs In Context: Exploring Roman Architectural Influence In The Catacombs Of Rabat, Malta, Emily S.R Hodson
Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects
Previously, scholarship on the Mediterranean catacombs has focused on isolated sites or on the religious significance and iconography of regional groups. By contextualizing the archaeological data through comparison and recentering the discussion on architecture, this research offers a contextualized, non-apologetic picture of ancient Mediterranean catacombs. This architectural comparison between the Roman catacombs and those of St. Paul and Abbatija Tad-Dejr in Malta reveals both significant architectural change and the persistence of archaic features, suggesting a high degree of cultural continuity under Roman provincial governance on Malta (218 BCE - c. 5th - 6th centuries CE). Two salvage excavation seasons conducted in the center of the Ḥamanyot neighborhood in Shoham uncovered the remains of a large building, adjacent tombs, a complex winepress and several additional agricultural installations, all dating to the Byzantine and Early Islamic periods (sixth–eighth centuries CE). The building can be identified as either a large farmhouse or a monastery. Its solid walls, agricultural installations and small finds—such as fragments of glass windows, a marble chancel-screen column and a marble table leg likely from an offering table—all indicate the presence of a church at the site, supporting the interpretation that the building functioned as …

Adulation of heroes, including the flawed, militaristic, authoritative men of Homeric epic, was an important feature of ancient Hellenic culture. This phenomenon is reflected in cults and shrines built in the Archaic period. How did these so-called “hero cults” form, and can Early Iron Age (EIA) elite burials form a connection between the tomb cults of the Late Bronze Age (LBA) and the hero cults of the Archaic and later Classical periods? In 1991, an excavation was conducted at the eastern margins of Tel Zavat, under the direction of S. Yankelevich. Five stratigraphic phases were identified, dated to the Middle Bronze Age IIb, Late Bronze Age II, and the Hellenistic period. The excavation revealed tombs with accompanying grave goods, as well as the remains of structures and walls, a pit, ovens, and fragments of bricks and pottery.

In 1972, an excavation was conducted in the ancient cemetery of Qanat al-Ja'ar (north of Ein Hanatziv; map ref. 247/709), under the direction of D. Bahat. In the excavation, and in those that preceded it, three types of tombs were exposed. The finds in the tombs included many pottery vessels, bronze vessels, glass vessels, weapons including a spear and a knife, cosmetics vessels, a mirror, a fibula pin, and jewellery.

In December 1956, an excavation was conducted near the northern gate of the Tirat Zvi group (map ref. 249875/703250), following the exposure of a burial cave during earth mining. The cave was badly damaged during the mining and the excavators encountered difficulty revealing the finds in situ due to the rainy weather.

Four rectangular cist tombs were exposed, some of which were damaged by the construction work on the site. The tombs, which were oriented in a north–south direction, were built of soft limestone that was dressed on the inner side. In 1952, an excavation was conducted in Tiberias, west of the house of the Custodian of Absentee Property (map ref. unknown), following the discovery of tombs during repair work in the building. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by B. Ravni. The excavation was carried out in a pit (3.5 × 6.0 m, depth 1.1 m) opened by the Public Works Department. Six tombs or parts of tombs were found, of which only three were excavated thoroughly. Some of the tombs were hewn in the rock and some built.

In 1952, a trial excavation was conducted in Tiberias (map ref. 2500/7440), following the discovery of tombs during the digging a channel for pipelines by workers of Tiberias municipal water department (beginning in the middle of the Aliyah Street in the west). The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by B. Ravni. Eight tombs, of which four were fully examined, were exposed in the channel (0.5 × 107 m, max. depth 0.5 m).
