In 1979, an excavation was conducted at Horbat ‘En Tut, on the western slopes of Giv’at Sha’ul (map ref. 216/632), following a construction project on Giv’at Sh’aul Bet. The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums in cooperation with the Center for Field Studies of the Society for the Protection of Nature, was directed by J. Gat, with the assistance of A. Avishar and Y. Eshet (Center for Field Studies) and Y. Vatkin (Surveying).

In September 1979, a salvage excavation was conducted in the courtyard of the youth hostel at Tel Ḥai under the direction of G. Edelstein. Burial caves were exposed after being damaged during the quarrying of a pit for the construction of a shelter. According to the excavation diary, three burial caves were documented; in one of them, two loculi were identified, along with five additional loculi. The finds from the caves and the loculi included pottery and glass vessels dating to the Roman period.

Since World War I the Palaeolithic industries of Palestine have been the subject of a considerable amount of investigation and discussion. The results of this work have been made available to scholars of the Ancient Near East primarily in isolated journal articles or publications of single sites. The present writer intends, therefore, to present an account of those Palaeolithic industries in which this data is collected, systematized and interpreted in such a way that scholars working in this area of Near Eastern studies may have at their disposal a foundation which is readily meaningful and broadly factual.
