During August–September 2022, preliminary trial trenches and a trial excavation were conducted on a private plot in Jebel Mukkabbir (Permit No. A-9393/2022; Map ref. 222688-719/629640-74). The excavation, on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority and funded by Mr. Hassin Kara'in, was directed by M. Hossin, with the assistance of N. Sapir and B. Touri (scientific counseling) and Sh. Halevi (photography and photogrammetry).

In May 2021, a trial excavation was conducted at Ramat Bet Shemesh (Neighborhood C2, Lot 508; Permit No. A-9014/2021; Map ref. 199112/623221). The excavation, on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority and funded by Yahel Engineers company, was directed by L. Silas, with the assistance of N. Nehama (administration), S. Halevi (photogrammetry, photography and measurements) and Y. Zelinger (scientific consulting). A hewn winepress with a treading surface was excavated and documented (Figure 1).

In January 1958, a salvage excavation was conducted on Giv’at Sokolov (Sokolov Hill) in Benei Beraq, during the renewal of the kurkar mining on the hill (map ref. 18413/66638). The excavation, undertaken on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums and financed by the Benei Beraq Municipality, was directed by V. Sussman and J. Naveh. The western wall of a cave was exposed. The cave ceiling had collapsed. A burnt layer that contained pottery was found on the floor of the cave, which was dated to the Chalcolithic period.

In June 1958, an excavation was conducted at Kibbutz Mishmar HaEmek, following the discovery of a burial cave with loculi during the construction of a road between Mishmar HaEmek and Ein HaShoffet (map ref. 2133/7243). The cave was discovered on the southern slopes of Tel Shosh by the children of Mishmar HaEmek, who removed numerous glass vessels, metal artefacts and lamps that were dated to the Byzantine period. In 1954, an excavation was conducted on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem (map ref. 21707/63147). The excavation, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, was directed by E. Anati. A burial cave that was dated to the Fist Temple period was discovered. The cave had also been in use during the Second Temple period. The excavation file contains drawings of pottery vessels that were found in accumulations inside the cave. No finds were registered in the National Treasures.

During May 1949 and March 1950, salvage excavations were conducted on the El-Waqf hill in Bene Beraq, under the direction of Jacob Kaplan (map ref. unknown). The 1949 excavation was conducted following the discovery of the remains of ancient structures during foundations work for construction. On the slope of the hill an olive-press was unearthed. A round stone slab with a square hole in its center served as a base for the press. Adjacent to it, a big clay jar was found in situ, which served as a receptacle into which the oil flowed.
