Aware: Eliminating Implicit Bias Using Ar, Shagun Bose, Emma Strauch
Frameless
Implicit Bias is something that happens to real people in real spaces all the time. But we can’t see it. Since, AR allows us to overlay virtual objects in real environments, we tried to leverage AR to make more salient the various ways in which people experience bias.

Designing An Online Platform To Support Long-Distance Romantic Relationships, Jiayu Kang
Designing An Online Platform To Support Long-Distance Romantic Relationships, Jiayu Kang
Theses - ALL
Nowadays, Long-Distance Relationships (LDRs) are increasingly popular and ubiquitous for many reasons, including travel for career, education, and parent care. Compared to geographically-close relationships; it seems LDRs face many challenges: difficulties in communication, time zone difference, temptations from others, and lack of physical engagement, among other things. While the rise of computer-mediated communication provide many channels for interaction for LDR partners, statistics show that many long-distance relationships still don't last. I focused on two important factors that can impact relationship satisfaction—self-disclosure and a caring response. I employed an online survey to understand how partners self-disclose and show a caring response …

Domestic Data Streamers, a creative data firm founded by Barcelona native Pau Garcia, is driving changes in how people view and use data, both at home in Spain and abroad. Modern life is burdened with so many problems that even when a project succeeds, it can leave one with a sense of rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. However, there is cause for optimism. As the preceding stories make clear, things get better when people get connected. Professor Kees Dorst helps us to understand this process and its importance.

Yanki Lee, founding director of HKDI DESIS Lab for Social Design Research, returned on campus to speak at the Design Thinking lecture series. Titled Design by People, for People, the lecture zooms in on the relationship between design and human beings. With over 20 years of experience in design research and education, this is both a topic Dr. Lee has deeply explored, as well as what she believes to be the future direction for the field of design.

Eating is such a fundamental and enjoyable part of being human. However, for those dealing with age-related conditions such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease the simple task of feeding oneself is far from straightforward. Struggling at mealtime not only endangers ones' health, but just as importantly, it comes with a sense of helplessness and embarrassment that causes additional emotional suffering and puts stress on relationships.

A toy originally designed to help the visually impaired navigate their way through unfamiliar territory, is being put into practice in the sighted community as a fun way to learn the foundational skills of empathy and thoughtful communication. The Empathy Toy is a collaborative puzzle game that can only be solved when players learn to understand each other, and it has something to teach us all.

Sitting in a group talking about the best ways to finish up one's life may seem a bit morbid, but the reality is it can be very life-enhancing. All too often important things in a person's life go unsaid – it can be a heavy burden to carry, and can leave scars of regret after it is too late. In England a new, but reassuringly familiar way to tackle such heavy subjects is starting to take root.

Slipping on a coat, or pulling off a t-shirt are reflex actions for most people. Now imagine that every time you had to do this meant asking for help. Even more intimidating, when out in public what if you had to make this request to a stranger. Open Style Lab has set itself the mission to help reduce such daily struggles for people living with a disability.

Design, and designers, exist in a complex new age and work within a vastly increased range of actors and design considerations. Beyond the creation of a standalone product or service, successful design is now also gauged on how effectively connections amongst people, products, and services are realised. Consequently, the 2020 series of Signed is dedicated to understanding why people's need must always be the starting point for any designed solutions.

Visiting the Garden
Winter is gone
The sun is out
I open right up
I come right out.
My bright red complexion
My powerful aroma
Creatures come to see me,
Without a doubt.
They know my smell
They know my name
They know what I am
Not ever a doubt.
Every year I am the same,
But they always change.
Till next year my friends
Please stay the same.
I feel you looking
I never move, always still
Frozen like a rock.
I am as bright as a flame
And catch the shining sun.
You’re drawn to me
Like a …

We, Three
I am the soil, the mountains and oceans of life.
Mycellium colonies beneath my surface plunge up
up, up through the peat and the moss, the decaying leaves. They pray for the rain, the fruit of my earth.
Plantae nestle in, fragile and comfortable,
seeds sprout to eagerly gulp rain,
animalia flourish, consuming what I provide
only to come home, at the end, to me
to rejoin my earth;
we are one
I am the atmosphere, the sunny clouds and storms producing bounty to those below
I am the chaos in the lightning
I am the rainbow after …

Floral Beauty
An appreciation for chrysanthemum
Took bloom within her soul during
Her early years of life and began
To flourish as time went on
Passing slowly, the years whisked
By and things would grow all around
Her as her hair drifted down past
Her slim shoulders – long brown
“I wish to grow my roots, soon,
In one place where I can stay
Becoming stronger within myself
Until it is time for me to wither away
I’ll make this body a lovely space
For my spirit of flora to grow and
Thrive, with windows all around to
Let sunshine …

ILJA
I remember you
sitting in the woods,
Gathering in the children
Gathering in the
sights and sounds.
You’re expression
warm, kind patient
as the children crawl over you.
I remember
Sitting on this rock
breathing in the scent of the woods
Trying to bring in
the calm I see in you
Amid the chaos
Of children befriending you
Of parents attempting
To capture the moment
With their devices
Of plastic, wires and glass.

Three Garden Visitors
Beside a cup of tea, I am a spotted leopard on pajamas.
Outside in the garden, this early summer morning,
Staying sly, quiet, not wanting to draw any attention from the neighbors.
A birdie is hidden in the Emerald Green Arborvitae,
After lunch, Owen comes over, asking politely if he can come into the yard to find it.
I reply, “Certainly, you can retrieve anything that lands in the yard without asking”.
Coming unannounced, no matter when, full of presumption
It comes with the lightest, gentle touch or the hardest hit, knocking flowers off center.
Below the …

Dandy
I’ll be so direct by saying, if I may, that here is simply, absolutely, the best place to be. Here,
where the rolling hill plunges towards the ocean. Here, where the sight of the Bavarian blue sky
makes my insides feel endless. Here, where, watching as I so often do, as the white cotton
shape-shifts before my eyes, summer-time in suspense. The sun’s rays suspend from the sky,
dangling like the hands of time. They caress me. A pocket watch in the sky, the sky's the best
accessory. Here, where I am more popular than I could ever have …
