Building A Pedagogy Of Idea Generation And Embodied Inquiry, Kate Joranson Jun 2023

Building A Pedagogy Of Idea Generation And Embodied Inquiry, Kate Joranson

Art History Pedagogy & Practice

What futures become possible when we center questions, inquiry, and affective responses in research processes? What does it mean to support encounters with new ideas? In this article, I explore non-extractive models of teaching and learning, sharing ways of making space for idea generation, an under-described part of research and creative practice. The coming-up-with-ideas part of creative and scholarly work can be challenging to articulate, share, and teach. What if we paused and stretched this part out, making it more visible? By browsing physical collections of books in community with one another, during “curated browsing” experiences, we give ourselves — …

Stolen Votes And Silenced Voices: An Overturned Colorado Election And The Suppression Of Free Speech, David Hosansky

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Against the backdrop of violent labor disputes in Colorado’s mining districts, a pro-labor Democratic candidate in the 1904 gubernatorial race appeared to oust the Republican incumbent by 10,000 votes. But amid widespread allegations of fraud, Republicans used legal and political maneuvers to seize the governorship and establish control over the General Assembly, the state supreme court, and even local offices in the traditional Democratic strongholds of Denver. When U.S. Senator Thomas Patterson, a Colorado Democrat and publisher of two Denver newspapers, reacted with scathing commentary about the Colorado Supreme Court’s role in the takeover, the court fired back, fining Patterson …

Revisiting The Meaning Of The City And The Library, Michael Paulus Jun 2023

Revisiting The Meaning Of The City And The Library, Michael Paulus

SPU Works

We are living through an information revolution connected with automated information processing and artificial intelligence. Previous information revolutions, connected with information agencies and information artifacts, resulted in cities—described by Jacques Ellul in The Meaning of the City as artificial and autonomous systems—and libraries, which augment human intelligence through technological systems as well as related formative practices. The library remains an important institution and infrastructure for confronting challenges and opportunities associated with the latest form artificial agency, AI. Focusing on the history of the library, this paper explores the history of—and future possibilities for—the role of artificial agency in cultural development.

The Intersection Of American Nativism And Eugenics: Anti-Japanese Sentiment Prior To World War Ii, James Richard Chesemore Jun 2023

The Intersection Of American Nativism And Eugenics: Anti-Japanese Sentiment Prior To World War Ii, James Richard Chesemore

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

This thesis examines how the anti-Japanese sentiment and legislation promoted by those leading the American eugenics movement contributed to the key economic, diplomatic, and social policies that influenced the start of the Pacific War. In the years leading up to and following World War I, Japan desired and sought full parity, including diplomatic racial equality, with the United States and other Anglo-Saxon powers. However, the United States wanted to maintain the pre- and post-World War I world order, which meant the continued subordination of Japan on the world stage. As both nations sought global economic expansion and colonialism in the …

The Spiritual Migrants Of Sogenji: Notes Of Participant Observation In A Rinzai Zen Temple, Andrei-Razvan Coltea Jun 2023

The Spiritual Migrants Of Sogenji: Notes Of Participant Observation In A Rinzai Zen Temple, Andrei-Razvan Coltea

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Anomie is a cultural pathology that is becoming chronic in the West, characterized by the erosion of values, disintegration and deregulation. Amongst its symptoms we find anxiety, isolation, depression, tribalism, incoherence and loss of meaning. Individuo-globalism is a new ideology that permeates the religious market created by globalisation, encouraging individuals to discover, nurture and express their ‘true self’. This new spirituality forms the background for a journey that our ‘heroes’, a handful of non-Japanese inhabitants of a Japanese Rinzai Zen monastery, have been undertaking for years in search of the philosopher’s stone that could cure anomie and its symptoms. At …

Trans Futures In The Present Moment, Willow Grace Eckmayer Jun 2023

Trans Futures In The Present Moment, Willow Grace Eckmayer

University Honors Theses

The current climate for trans folks in the U.S. remains increasingly hostile and many researchers have called attention to the "joy deficit" within the existing trans literature (Shuster & Westbrook, 2022). This study investigates what trans individuals are currently doing to survive, thrive, and resist in a belligerent socio-political climate. To answer this, five community conversations with 25 participants were held using a semi-structured conversation guide. Within the analysis, the central theme that emerged was that trans individuals are using their communities to create radical futures. Our communities are supporting us through mutual aid and radical acts of care, which …

Proceedings Of Nordes 2023: This Space Intentionally Left [Blank], Vanessa Rodrigues, Carl Westin, Stefan Holmlid

DRS Conference Volumes

This volume is the proceedings of the 10th biennial Nordes conference, hosted by Linköping University, 12 – 14 June 2023. All contributions relate in different ways to the overall theme, ‘This Space Intentionally Left [Blank]’.

A blank space—a silence, pause, interstice, gap, in-between, opening, punctuation, negative space—can be deliberately or incidentally devoid of content. A space left blank is as much an invitation to notice the void and the structure that surrounds it, as it is a question as to why and how they are per- ceived. Such absence can remind us to seek out conscious or unconscious intentions hidden …

حقيقة الاستحسان عند الحنفية The Reality Of The Istihsan According To Al Hanafia School, Harith Mohammed Issa

Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies

Al Hanafia School used the Istihsan principle until they became famous for it, where Abu Hanifa was incomparable with it. Istihsan in all its forms is nothing but an alteration of a general rule, texts, an analogy, or an extracted origin for legal evidence that requires modification. This act of Istihsan was not an opinion, preference, self-distance, or derogation of legal evidence, rather the Istihsan was based on evidence that may be a hidden analogy, text, consensus, necessity, custom, interest, or a general jurisprudential rule.

لقد أعمل الحنفية الاستحسان حتى اشتهروا به وكان أبو حنيفة فيه لا يجارى، وأن الاستحسان …

The study has concluded that the meaning of nushūz is that the husband or the wife fears that their spouse might start a forbidden relationship (infidelity) with another person; thus, the other spouse should make serious attempts trying to find a solution to this possible marital infidelity according to …

This kind of therapy was not strange to Islamic medicine, but it was a cornerstone and a prominent feature in medicine. Ibn Al-Qayem made significant contributions related to spiritual guidance as he shed light in his book The Prophetic Medicine on spiritual recovery and its elements, and he set rules and guidelines for spiritual therapy. His writings on spiritual guidance and its sources played a significant …

حجج المنتقدين لمتون أحاديث في الصحيحين ومناقشتها Arguments Of The Critics Of Texts Of Some Ahadith Of Al_Sahihayin And Their Discussion, Sharaf Al-Qudah Jun 2023

حجج المنتقدين لمتون أحاديث في الصحيحين ومناقشتها Arguments Of The Critics Of Texts Of Some Ahadith Of Al_Sahihayin And Their Discussion, Sharaf Al-Qudah

Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies

There have been many writings in our time criticizing the ahadith al-Sahihayn, which are the two soundest books of the Prophetic hadith. Most of these criticisms focus on the criticism of the text. Arguments of those who weaken the ahadith are many, and some writings discuss such criticisms; however, they focus on Sanad (i.e., chains of hadith narrators), where many of them discuss the criticism of a particular hadith. To the best of my knowledge, I have not come across either a book or a research paper concerned with gathering and discussing all arguments of the critics of the text. …

Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies

This study tackles a very important topic, which is an old and new topic. Many have denied physical resurrection after death in the past, and there are still those who deny the physical resurrection of materialists and existentialists. Many studies attempted to address the issue of resurrection, but what distinguished this study is that it discusses the mental evidence that the Holy Qur’an used in proving the physical resurrection, where the researcher supposes that the Holy Qur’an provided us with a distinct approach and a unique method that addresses the mind and evokes conscience in proving the issue of physical …

Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies

This research aims to develop a framework from the Holy Qur’an that succinctly explain the essence of scientific research and the interrelationship among its basic components. This is to solve the problem of the ambiguity surrounding the concept of scientific research and the mechanism of dealing with its elements which are hitherto unclear to some student researchers. The researcher adopted the analytical method founded on the deductive methodology, where the theoretical framework of the research was formed from the theory of the perfect matching of the Qur’anic language propounded by Al-Hafiz Al-Khattabi (d. 388 AH). Verse 31 of surah al-Ma’idah …

Postcolonial Hauntology Of Modernity: Exploring Legacies Of Enlightenment Thought In The Understanding Of The 'Human' Through Intertextualities In Heart Of Darkness And Hunter X Hunter, Pumho Karimi

Comparative Literature Undergraduate Senior Theses

The thesis explores how Enlightenment Thought defined a certain idea of being human through intertextual motifs observed in Joseph Conrad's novella Heart of Darkness and Yoshihiro Togashi's Japanese manga Hunter x Hunter. Such a comparative analysis is premised on the idea that the historical context that inspires the plot in both texts are interlinked i.e., the colonial context in the Congo under Belgian rule mined the uranium that was used in making the atomic bomb that struck Japan in 1945. As such, using a postcolonial biopolitical framework, the intertextual motifs are analysed to argue how Enlightenment Thinking became a haunting …

Regulars, Michael Sieburt Wiener Jun 2023

Regulars, Michael Sieburt Wiener

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

My thesis play unfolds in the wake of the pandemic we’ve collectively faced, which hovers over its dramatic landscape, but is rarely directly addressed, a narrative penumbra subtle enough to be merely suggestive, almost subliminal, even as today, in America and around the world, we navigate the pandemic’s lingering aftermath by way of our quiet struggles, individual and collective, with mental health—an insidious, one might say endemic, pandemic of its own— that we ignore at our societal peril. My mother struggled with manic depression, which inflected our fraught bond in sometimes volatile ways and may have contributed to her early …

I draw from Black feminist and womanist thought, music cognition, and public health literature to outline a framework for designing music interventions to reduce stress among Black populations: the Music Medicine Critical Race Praxis. I situate my work among Black speculative artists reimagining experiences in everyday Black life as well as music intervention researchers integrating …

Limits To Sentience, Donald M. Broom Jun 2023

Limits To Sentience, Donald M. Broom

Animal Sentience

There are many parallels between cellular function in animals and plants. Plants can have complex interactions with their environments. But they lack a central nervous system, which is a prerequisite for sentience (the capacity to feel). In my view the suggestion that plants are sentient is not only empirically incorrect but potentially harmful to the efforts to protect the welfare of sentient beings.

Benefits And Barriers: Women's Access To Mobile Tech In Iran And The Mena Region, Antonia Felix

Educational Leadership Department Publications

While the 17% gender gap in mobile internet use in the MENA region reveals that women have less access to the benefits of mobile money apps and other technology, 60% of women in the region do go online via mobile phones to make purchases, access credit, send money to family members, assist in their children’s education, receive government benefits, and engage in other activities that improve their lives. Barriers preventing women from mobile internet access, however, typically fall into three categories: lack of access, illiteracy and/or lack of digital skills, and safety concerns. Music In The Liturgy: An Education-Focused Approach, Robert M. Beatty Jun 2023

Music In The Liturgy: An Education-Focused Approach, Robert M. Beatty

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

This project examines how people engage with music in the Latin Rite Roman Catholic Liturgy. Despite ongoing debates in the field of liturgical music regarding musical style, music may express theological concepts, explore critical historical developments, reflect different cultural influences, and challenge commonly held beliefs. This inquiry explores these dynamics from the standpoints of educational theory and theology by examining the process of 'doing' and ‘receiving’ music in the liturgy. The site for this study was St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Chicago, whose current curriculum-based, liturgical music program developed over the last twenty-five years. Qualitative, case-study research methods, personal …
