The purpose of this study was to investigate the complex relationship between religion and state during the Meiji era (1868-1912). Specifically, how central governmental and religious figures craft a sense of unity and national identity. The primary research question of this study is: How did the Meiji Emperor’s development as a totem unite the people and grant credibility to the Meiji era (1868-1912)? A totem in this context is a functioning symbol that is both representative and sacred. This study was conducted through the analysis of primary source documents, Imperial shrine activity, and historical context sources. Most people commonly imagine gleaming, unpainted, white marble under the lights of a museum gallery. However, Roman sculpture was far from how we commonly view it today; the Roman world was full of painted statues. How and why was Roman portraiture stripped of its color? This thesis discusses the development and use of Roman honorific portraiture over the course of the Republic, and the existence of polychromy within the Greco-Roman world. Furthermore, this paper also explores how color was erased from the historical narrative and argues that the understanding of Roman sculpture as polychromatic must be reincorporated back into the …

History, especially Classical history, is not as objective as it is often made out to be. Classical scholarship is not immune to the influence of politics, even if and when a scholar does not explicitly reference it or intend for the scholarship to be political. To explore this influence, this thesis examines two case studies: Edmund Buchner’s work from the 20th century on the so-called “ Horologium Augusti, ” and the rise of regime transition scholarship in the 21st century. Virgil composed the Aeneid at a moment when Roman cultural identity experienced a thorough reevaluation. This thesis argues that the Aeneid does not merely reflect the cultural moment in which it was written but rather presents a model for the formation of this new Roman identity. The second half of the Aeneid centers almost entirely upon the interactions and developing relationships between the different peoples who reside within Latium. It is only through the formation of alliances – built upon equal treaties (foedera) and cultural exchange – that peace is able to be formed between those peoples. The …

This thesis investigates otherization and its use as a tool for power through theoretical, historical, and movement based investigations. Over the course of this academic year, I worked with a group of Connecticut College dancers in weekly rehearsals to build choreography and to hold discussions. This took place alongside external, independent research into thinkers and artists from Jean-Jacques Rousseau to Martha Graham, theories by historians such as Edward Said, and both historical and current events. These elements were not approached sequentially, but simultaneously, with the intention that each element influence and inform the others. I reference this variety of topics …

This thesis examines how Western music theory pedagogy—long organized around tonal and twelve-tone equal-temperament frameworks—structures both what is taught and how students are trained to listen. Through a literature review tracing the historical construction of tonal universality in undergraduate curricula, the project argues that dominant models of music theory reproduce broader epistemic hierarchies inherited from Western conservatory traditions. Situating these histories within my own experience as a student navigating institutional listening norms, the thesis combines critical self-reflection with ethnographic research conducted across five liberal arts institutions, including the CBB consortium and JanPlan research at Wesleyan University and Amherst College. Survey data from the ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey at the Afro-Indigenous Burial Ground (AIBG) at Sylvester Manor, Shelter Island, NY. Zip folder contains raw recorded data (radargrams). Additional files include zipped shapefiles for GPR transects, trees and rocks; and  dat file. Fieldstone marker files include zipped folders with an excel sheet listing numbered fieldstone markers, and a sheet listing the photographs of the fieldstone markers. Fieldstone marker number allows tor joining the photographs, and the "rock" shapefile to the list of markers.

Understanding how social vulnerability relates to disaster impacts is critical for addressing social equity, yet the role of spatial scale in this relationship is often overlooked. Most studies use aggregated data, risking ecological fallacy-misinterpreting individual outcomes from group-level data. This study examines how spatial scale influences the relationship between social vulnerability and federal disaster assistance after Hurricane Harvey. Using spatial econometric models at both household and census tract levels, we assessed the strength of key vulnerability indicators in explaining disaster assistance. Results show that disability, housing tenure, household size, and income predict assistance at the household level, but their influence …

Rainbows and Shades of Gray is an original musical that explores the complexities of addiction, memory, and grief through a nonlinear, liminal narrative structure. The story follows Aaron, a deceased veteran, father, and musician forced to confront moments from his life as he grapples with the impact of his addiction on his relationships with his wife, Danielle, and daughter, Natalia. Through a series of fragmented scenes spanning past and present, the musical examines the emotional aftermath of trauma and the ways in which love persists despite harm.
