The Book Of Poetry And Diplomacy : What Does It Mean To Say, “I Love You”?, Wai-Yee Li
How to Read Chinese Poetry Podcast
This episode discusses how the language of love and kinship is used in diplomatic negotiations through the recitation of odes. For example, aLu minister uses a wedding song to compare smaller states to a bride welcomed by her groom (the powerful Jin). A woman picking artemisia with care becomes the analogue for a powerful state cherishing a weak one. A Zheng minister uses an ode about seduction to forestall or resist aggression. A Jin leader affirms an alliance through an ode celebrating brotherhood.

Egyptian Female Podcasters: Shaping Feminist Identities, Kim Fox, Yasmeen Ebada

The objective of the research study was to explore how young female podcasters in Egypt acquire feminist knowledge, how their feminist identity has been shaped and, specifically, how podcasts were used for digital feminism. With audio production genres and feminist epistemology frameworks, our analysis shows how podcasts were knowingly utilized as a tool for cyberactivism. The study found that the podcaster’s feminist identities embodied Westernized and/or Black feminist epistemologies, while also indicating a deeper recognition of Egyptian feminism attained during their college careers. War Over Measure: Latin American Cultural Policy And The Pedagogy Of Neoliberal States, D. Bret Leraul

This article recovers the link between cultural and educational policy in Latin America to understand the neoliberal state’s discursive institution of culture as capital. It does so by studying the form and function of Mexican and Chilean cultural bureaucracies. The calculability and accountability of culture in Chilean cultural policy and the incalculability of Mexico’s culture of favor cultural policy are but two sides of one coin issued by the same neoliberal state form. Anthropocene Fiction: Empathy, Kinship, And The Troubled Waters At The End Of The World, Megan Mandell Stowe

Anthropocene literature features characters and environments grappling with the devastation of climate change. Donna Haraway’s term Chthulucene narrows this category further by exposing the tentacular connections between overpopulation, dependence on material goods, species loss, and other facets of global warming—such as water as a resource. Three novels of the Chthulucene exhibit these connections, centering on the importance of water to both ecologies and personal identity. As seen in the novels, place attachment brings ecology and identity together by forging a stewardship between person and location, often resulting in efforts to defend and preserve a place. Altering The Meaning Of Remembrance: The Influence Of Resurgent Nazi Perpetrators On The Jewish Museum Berlin, Zamara Tomko

This visual exhibit looks at various images of the Jewish Museum Berlin and the effects resurgent neo-Nazis had on its design. After 1989, the building saw alterations to its interpretation and the architect Daniel Libeskind's design due to a lack of funding because of reunification, political power gained by the right-wing parties, and xenophobia towards Jewish people and foreign workers. It evolved from a Cold War project meant to represent Berlin and Berlin Jewish history both distinctly and integrally to a symbol of reunited Germany that showcased the continual and persistent victimization of the Jewish people.

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: László Moholy-Nagy And The Photobook, Sarah Hill

In this paper with a corresponding visual exhibition, I will examine the Hungarian modern artist László Moholy-Nagy's 1925 photobook Malerei Fotografie Film (Painting Photography Film) and his optical theories about how technology can impact human perception of time and motion. I will also investigate Moholy-Nagy's influence on other important photobooks of the era, such as Franz Roh and Jan Tschichold's Photo Eye: 76 Photos of the Time, and the important 1929 Film und Foto (Film and Photography) exhibition, known as FiFo, in Stuttgart, Germany. I will draw particularly on Pepper Stetler's 2015 book Stop Reading! Look! Modern Vision …
