Nami-Ko: A Realistic Novel, Kenjiro Tokutomi Jul 2022

Nami-Ko: A Realistic Novel, Kenjiro Tokutomi

Zea E-Books Collection

Nami-Ko, also called The Cuckoo (不如帰, Hototogisu), is a tragic story of love and devotion, through sickness, war, oppression, and vengeance. Eighteen-year-old Nami Kataoka hoped her marriage to Baron Takeo Kawashima would bring freedom from her overbearing stepmother. But the couple’s happiness is spoiled by her illness, her mother-in-law’s jealousy, and the schemes of Chijiwa, her husband’s cousin and her own disappointed suitor. Takeo’s naval career takes him away for long periods, and when war breaks out between Japan and China (in 1894), his mother takes advantage of his absence to break up the marriage, sending Nami back …

When Might We Break The Rules? A Statistical Analysis Of Aesthetics In Photographs, Justin Wang, Marie A. Lee, Thomas C.M. Lee Jul 2022

When Might We Break The Rules? A Statistical Analysis Of Aesthetics In Photographs, Justin Wang, Marie A. Lee, Thomas C.M. Lee

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

High-quality photographs often follow certain high-level rules well known to photographers, but some photographs intentionally break these rules. Doing so is usually a matter of artistry and intuition, and the conditions and patterns that allow for rule-breaks are often not well articulated by photographers. This article first applies statistical techniques to help find and evaluate rule-breaking photographs, and then from these photographs discover those patterns that justify their rule-breaking. With this approach, this article discovered some significant patterns that explain why some high-quality photographs successfully break the common photographic rules by positioning the subject in the center or the horizon …

An Independent Identity, Brion Patrick Hardink Jul 2022

An Independent Identity, Brion Patrick Hardink

Theses - ALL

Much of my time in graduate school was spent pondering the very basic question, "what is art?" My experience was that certain distinctions separate the Illustration and Fine Art disciplines. This is something I have wrestled with. One common component between the disciplines, however, is the aspiration to communicate ideas and feelings. It is not so much the medium or mode of expression that is important as is the content. To this end, mortality is the one universally relatable truth all human beings share. The opposing ways in which different cultures have understood, accepted, and expressed this is something which …

Wandering And Wondering: Mapping The Confines Of The Introspective Spaces Of Julio Cortázar, Sergio Chejfec, And Samanta Schweblin, Tamara Alisa Morgan Jul 2022

Wandering And Wondering: Mapping The Confines Of The Introspective Spaces Of Julio Cortázar, Sergio Chejfec, And Samanta Schweblin, Tamara Alisa Morgan

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the juxtaposition of time and space and how they affect the relationships of the protagonists with the people and places around them. I examine works by the Argentine writers Julio Cortázar, Sergio Chejfec, and Samanta Schweblin, to trace a genealogical connection of techniques and universal themes within their texts regarding place and the search for human identity and belonging in the globalized world. Engaging the theoretical notions of space, power, and subjectivity (Henri Lefebvre, Giuliana Bruno, Marc Augé), as well as flânerie and phantasmagoria (Walter Benjamin), I contend that the protagonists of these works are incomplete beings …

Adapting North American Fiddle Bow Technique To The Double Bass, Spencer Jensen Jul 2022

Adapting North American Fiddle Bow Technique To The Double Bass, Spencer Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Because of the pioneering work of Edgar Meyer in expanding the role of the double bass in American folk music, many bassists are inspired to engage with fiddle music in the way fiddlers do. Thus, bassists who perform in fiddle and string band traditions may seek greater artistic freedom and expression by shifting between a variety of accompanying textures to playing melody and improvised bowed solos.

In seeking to discover how bassists successfully adapt fiddle bowing techniques to the double bass, I have interviewed two bassists who are deeply involved in Americana music traditions, Paul Kowert and Ethan Jodziewicz. From …

The Politics Of Institutional Reform: Vulnerability And Bureaucratic Independence In Asian Agriculture, Jacob Ricks Jul 2022

The Politics Of Institutional Reform: Vulnerability And Bureaucratic Independence In Asian Agriculture, Jacob Ricks

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Although effective bureaucracies are seen as key for service provision in developing states, we still have limited explanations for their emergence. I argue getting these institutions right is a political, rather than technical, challenge based on a set of theoretical predictions for reform outcomes acknowledging the interaction between a state’s political vulnerability and degree of bureaucratic independence. I apply these predictions to a controlled comparison of irrigation sector reforms in three Asian countries. The results demonstrate that the success of institutional reforms necessary to implement policies is contingent on both the degree of vulnerability experienced as well as the extent …

Regret Is Born Where Choice Dies, Shane Ryan Jul 2022

Regret Is Born Where Choice Dies, Shane Ryan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper analyses regret. On the basis of a number of examples, the case is made that regret is a negative affective state that has a perceived past choice as its object. More precisely, S regrets φ-ing, iff, and because (i) S has a negative affective state regarding φ-ing (Negative Affect State Requirement), the experience of which is explained by (ii) S perceiving that an alternative choice that was available to her would have been preferable to φ-ing (Perceived Forking Path Requirement). The resulting account is differentiated from Williams’ agent-regret and shown to avoid problems faced by Zeelenberg’s definition of …

Well-Being And Meaning In Life, Matthew Hammerton Jul 2022

Well-Being And Meaning In Life, Matthew Hammerton

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Many philosophers now see meaning in life as a key evaluative category that stands alongside well-being and moral goodness. Our lives are assessed not only by how well they go for us and how morally good they are, but also by their meaningfulness. In this article, I raise a challenge to this view. Theories of meaning in life closely resemble theories of well-being, and there is a suspicion that the former collapse into the latter. I develop this challenge showing that it is formidable. I then answer it by offering a novel account of what meaning in life is and …

The Effects Of Online Corrective Feedback On University Studentsʼ Self-Regulation In Writing, Pajaree Nipaspong

PASAA

This study aimed to determine how teachers’ online written corrective feedback (WCF) affected university students’ selfregulation in writing and how the effects differed among students of different English proficiency levels. The participants were 27 second-year university students enrolled in a required online writing course. Throughout the 16-week course, the students received online WCF on their writing through Google Docs. Results from pre- and post-questionnaires and interviews revealed the positive effects of teachers’ online WCF on students’ self-regulation in writing, especially those with mid- and low-proficiencies. Results from this study provided an indication of the effectiveness of online WCF in developing …

Is Filipino Esl Academic Writing Becoming More Informal?, Abdul Wahid I. Tocalo, Shainah P. Racman, Kyla Nicole Alibai G. Guiamelon, Bainarin M. Mama Jul 2022

Is Filipino Esl Academic Writing Becoming More Informal?, Abdul Wahid I. Tocalo, Shainah P. Racman, Kyla Nicole Alibai G. Guiamelon, Bainarin M. Mama

PASAA

The observation of informalities in academic writing has become tremendous in recent years, as revealed by a plethora of cross-cultural and diachronic studies. Different users of English have already been explored; however, none has centered on the case of English as a Second Language (henceforth ESL) writers, such as Filipino academic writing scholars, in terms of delineating informalities in their academic writing discourse over time. For this reason, this quantitative study aimed to diachronically analyze informality features in academic writing of Filipino ESL researchers in the applied linguistics field. Using the framework of Hyland and Jiang (2017), a significant association …

Narrow Listening As A Method To Improve Efl Learnersʼ Listening Comprehension, Ngọc Yếna Thị Trần, Rob Waring Jul 2022

Narrow Listening As A Method To Improve Efl Learnersʼ Listening Comprehension, Ngọc Yếna Thị Trần, Rob Waring

PASAA

The practice of narrow listening was introduced almost 30 years ago (Krashen, 1996), but has not received enough attention from English language teachers and researchers. Past research has placed a focus on the combination of this method and narrow reading, or the use of this method in teaching languages other than English. This study explored narrow listening as an independent method to improve EFL learners’ listening comprehension. The 38 participants in this study were intermediate EFL adult learners following a general English course. During the experiment, the treatment group were provided with narrow listening materials, while the control group were …

Reading Portfolio And Video-Mediated Reflection Tasks: University Studentsʼ Engagement In Dialogic Reading, Reni Kusumaningputri Jul 2022

Reading Portfolio And Video-Mediated Reflection Tasks: University Studentsʼ Engagement In Dialogic Reading, Reni Kusumaningputri

PASAA

This article reports on a single case study investigating the adoption of reading portfolio and video-mediated reflection tasks so as to promote Indonesian university studentsʼ engagement in dialogic reading. Nested in a classroom ethnography design, data were collected through multiple interviews, teaching journals, and studentsʼ Facebook-mediated interaction records. Drawing on thematic and discursive analysis, the findings showed that the reading portfolio and video-assisted reflection tasks encouraged the students to invest their time and energy into and engage in dialogic reading where collective meaning making practices took place. As the students were engaged in the reading portfolio and video-assisted reflection tasks, …

"Conserving" The Middle Ground: Tennessee's Unionist Press In The Secession Crisis, 1860-1861, Michael Singleton Jul 2022

"Conserving" The Middle Ground: Tennessee's Unionist Press In The Secession Crisis, 1860-1861, Michael Singleton

Master's Theses

This thesis advances scholars’ understanding of how newspaper editors framed and presented news during the secession crisis of 1860-1861. Methodologically, it draws on the publications of seven Unionist editors from Tennessee who initially resisted secession but later pursued different courses during the Civil War. Through this period, editors balanced their roles as journalists and political actors working to advance an ideological cause. Guided by existing practices and their unique journalistic styles, these editors presented a near unified message—influenced by Whig political culture—that framed their response to outside events. This unanimity fractured in 1861 as local pressures, business interests, and personal …

Say Their Names: Drama Of The Black Lives Matter Era, Deborah R. Geis Jul 2022

Say Their Names: Drama Of The Black Lives Matter Era, Deborah R. Geis

English Faculty publications

Three recent plays—Anna Deavere Smith's Notes from the Field, James Ijames' Kill Move Paradise, and Antoinette Nwandu's Pass Over—represent a new subgenre in African American theater thatmight be termed BLM (Black Lives Matter) Drama. Located at a crossroads between the past (especially the legacies of artists like Black Arts playwright LeRoi Jones [Amiri Baraka] and innovator Suzan-Lori Parks) and the present (in the wake of Freddie Gray, Eric Garner, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and many others), these works exemplify urgent political and aesthetic choices that foster activism. Among the techniques discussed in the close readings of these …

Afn 122 Course Design Worksheet And Content: An Anti - Racist And Culturally Inclusive Pedagogy, Oluremi "Remi" Alapo

Open Educational Resources

Studying (and teaching) such a vast and diverse continent can be challenging. Because no introductory course can claim to be fully comprehensive, this one will explore several themes in the history of Africa and its peoples that the professor finds important and noteworthy. The readings, lectures, films, and activities will consider broad regions of the continent, and the goals of this course include both knowledge and enjoyment. You should come away from this class with a new appreciation for Africa and a general idea of its history from 1500 to the present.
