Hell's Black Intelligencers: Representing Clandestine Labor On The Early Modern Stage, Evan Alexander Hixon Jul 2022

Hell's Black Intelligencers: Representing Clandestine Labor On The Early Modern Stage, Evan Alexander Hixon

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation, "Hell's Black Intelligencers: Representing Clandestine Labor on the Early Modern Stage," builds upon critical scholarship pertaining to early modern service and political theory to interrogate the imagined economic and social functions of clandestine service in the plays of Shakespeare, Jonson, and Webster. Drawing heavily on the works of András Kiséry, David Schalkwyk, Elizabeth Rivlin, and Michael Neill, I look at the exchange of service between spy and spymaster as an accumulation of social and cultural capital. Thinking through spying in this light, this dissertation explores how playwrights represent these service relationships which fall outside of systems of patronage-driven …

Peer-Reviewed Wellness Through The Lens Of A Medical Orchestra, Matthew J. Brooks Jul 2022

Peer-Reviewed Wellness Through The Lens Of A Medical Orchestra, Matthew J. Brooks

Music Faculty Publications

Stress and burnout afflict medical students and professionals at alarming rates, which has led institutions to invest in counseling services and other traditional wellness programming. However, the stigma of utilizing these services permeates the medical community. This narrative explores the founding of the Nebraska Medical Orchestra—an orchestra created as a nontraditional antidote to reduce stress and burnout among health care students and professionals—and also examines the concept of wellness through interactions between the orchestra’s director and health care-related musicians.

How A Medical Orchestra Cultivates Creativity, Joy, Empathy, And Connection, Roma Subramanian, Matthew J. Brooks

Music Faculty Publications

Background: Inspired by research indicating that exposure to humanities correlates with reduced burnout, the Nebraska Medical Orchestra was founded in 2018 as a collaboration between the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the University of Nebraska at Omaha School of Music.

Methods: Semistructured interviews about orchestra participants’ experiences were conducted with 9 musicians and recorded and transcribed. Transcripts were analyzed using the constant comparative method.

Results: The interviews suggested that participants are drawn to the orchestra to pursue a love of music, to be part of an ensemble, and to connect with others in an environment that provides a lighthearted, …

‘Mapping’ Moral Engagement In The Solution-Focused Approach Through Macintyre’S Model Of Practice, Brian K. Jennings Jul 2022

‘Mapping’ Moral Engagement In The Solution-Focused Approach Through Macintyre’S Model Of Practice, Brian K. Jennings

Journal of Solution Focused Practices

I attempt to answer Trish Walsh’s two questions about the ‘maps’ that might exist for moral engagement in the ‘helping’ professions and how these might relate to the Solution-Focused Approach (Walsh, 2010). I seek to do this by exploring the narrative of the emergence of the Solution Focused Approach from the perspective of Alasdair MacIntyre’s concept of a ‘practice’ (MacIntyre, 1985) with the aim of providing the basis for ‘map’ for moral engagement by Solution-Focused Practitioners. To this end I attempt to interpret the Solution Focused Approach as a MacIntyreian ‘practice’ in which virtues (as ‘human qualities’) emerge out of …

Reflections On Charlene's Influence, Marilyn Fischer Jul 2022

Reflections On Charlene's Influence, Marilyn Fischer

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

A contemporary appraisal of the breadth, significance, and legacy of the work of Charlene Haddock Seigfried, this book brings together writings focused on pragmatist feminism/feminist pragmatism, contemporary pragmatism, William James and the reconstruction of philosophy, education and American philosophy in the 21st century.

Charlene Haddock Seigfried is a looming figure in American thought and feminist theory who coined the phrase 'pragmatist feminist' which has become an increasingly important concept in contemporary philosophy. Seigfried argues that pragmatism and its rich history is a natural ally for feminism and that the creative combination of these two traditions can pave the way for …

Gender Norms And Gendered Traits, Rowan Bell Jul 2022

Gender Norms And Gendered Traits, Rowan Bell

Dissertations - ALL

Gender oppression is sustained in part through enforcement of and compliance with gender norms. Understanding how they work is therefore salient to the goal of gender liberation.According to the category-based view, which is common in analytic feminist philosophy, gender norms are assigned to individuals based on their assigned gender category, such as woman or man. I argue that this is insufficient, because it ignores the experiences of those who are marginalized or excluded from those categories. On a category-based view, individual responsiveness to gender norms will track gender category assignment; only individuals assigned the category woman will be responsive to …

Effects Of Post-Task Anticipation During Online Collaborative Writing In L2, Vararin Charoenchaikorn Jul 2022

Effects Of Post-Task Anticipation During Online Collaborative Writing In L2, Vararin Charoenchaikorn

PASAA

This study was motivated by Skehanʼs (1996, 1998) hypothesis about the potential of post-task anticipation to direct learnersʼ attention towards form and previous online L2 collaborative writing research that found prioritization of meaning in this context. It investigated the effects of post-task anticipation on text length, accuracy and complexity, and learnersʼ perceived effects of anticipation, in online collaborative writing. Ninetyeight Thai EFL learners of English on an online university course were divided into control and experimental groups. The control group performed the main online collaborative writing task without foreknowledge of a post-task, while the experimental group anticipated a peer language …

Formative Multimodal E-Feedback In Second Language Writing Virtual Learning Spaces, Watcharee Kulprasit

PASAA

In the digital era, writing experience usually comes in the form of digital writing in virtual spaces. Social network sites are the ubiquitous platforms where authentic communication makes writing meaningful in our daily life. In addition, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic encouraged all human activities to be done online. In the academic realm, particularly second language writing pedagogy, digital tools have been used to support digital learning and improve studentsʼ writing performance online. Moreover, as feedback is a crucial learning tool in writing pedagogy to help enhance studentsʼ writing development in campus-based settings, e-feedback takes on this role in …

PASAA

In Thailand, a series of policies have been implemented at all levels of Thai education. It is hoped that English language ability among Thai citizens will be improved. In primary education, following the English language education policy for primary school students introduced by the Office of Basic Education Commission (2016), English has been introduced to first graders onwards. They study English one hour every day, five days a week. When they finish grade 6, they should demonstrate their language ability at a CEFR A1 level. Various English tests have been used to check if the students are either proficient or …

This study aims at investigating the current trends in ELT/AL publications based on 180 articles from three Thai Scopus-indexed …

Studentsʼ Perspective On The Importance Of Efl Teachersʼ Tpack (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) And Xk (Contextual Knowledge) For Learning English During The Pandemic, Imelda Gozali, Bambang Yudi Cahyono Jul 2022

Studentsʼ Perspective On The Importance Of Efl Teachersʼ Tpack (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) And Xk (Contextual Knowledge) For Learning English During The Pandemic, Imelda Gozali, Bambang Yudi Cahyono

PASAA

To date, Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) seems to be the most widely-used framework for informing teachersʼ interplay of technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge. Mishra (2019) formally included Contextual Knowledge (XK), which has subsequently been conceptualized by scholars as Knowledge of Teachers and Knowledge of Students. While numerous research has been devoted to teachersʼ TPACK competence, scant attention has been given to which of the seven known TPACK subdomains (TK, PK, CK, TPK, TCK, PCK, and TPACK) are more important for students when it comes to learning a particular subject. Besides, insight into the nature of XK, more specifically Knowledge …

Straddling Differences: Celebrating Contradictions And Confusion At The Frontera, Miryam Espinosa-Dulanto, Karin A. Lewis, Vejoya Viren

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

A yearlong collective auto-ethnographic stories of three colleagues at a Hispanic Serving Institution at the U.S.–Mexican frontera culminated in the realization that our disparate experiences, the multiple voices used in articulating these, and the diverse ways these manifested in classroom practices and interactions had crafted the only academic space where we-three felt to belong.

Composing Her Growing Identities As A Mexican American, Xiaodi Zhou Jul 2022

Composing Her Growing Identities As A Mexican American, Xiaodi Zhou

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

This article studies the growing and changing cultural identifications of one early adolescent Mexican American girl as represented by her engagements with literacy. Her writing behaviors in particular manifested a changing cultural identity that reacted to and represented her response to a changing world. Her bilingualism and biculturalism manifested a dialogic innervation of distinct voices and truths, particularly set in the Trump-era United States. Through a theoretical framework of cultural hybridity and bordered identity, this study analyzes the complex linguistic, developmental, and cultural identities of a young Mexican American woman in the rural South.

MasterʼS Thesis Defense Presentation Slides In Applied Linguistics: Move Analysis Of The Introduction By Chinese Students, Mei He, Issra Pramoolsook

PASAA

Thesis defense presentation slides (TDPS) are a significant and unique genre in the final ritual of master’s students’ learning journey. However, few studies have explored this genre, especially its rhetorical structure, so students have scant knowledge of it. This study investigates the moves and steps of this genre focusing on their Introduction section. A move analysis was conducted of 20 TDPS introductions produced by Chinese master’s students in Applied Linguistics. Adopting Chen and Kuo’s (2012) framework, interviews with the TDPS authors were then conducted. This study confirms that the framework for M.A. theses, i.e., the source genre of TDPS, is …

Pro Vs. Am: Class Warfare In Early American Ski Competition, John W. Lundin Jul 2022

Pro Vs. Am: Class Warfare In Early American Ski Competition, John W. Lundin

Works by Local Authors

Originally Published in Skiing History MagazineJuly-August 2022.

In the late 1800s, professional sports attracted high-stakes gambling. The potential for bribery and extortion led to a general sense that paid athletes were corruptible and competitions untrustworthy. While betting on amateur events was common, a deep divide emerged between “pure” amateurs, who were said to compete for the love of the sport, and professionals, who competed for money in the form of cash prizes or other remuneration. The distinction often boiled down to so-called gentleman-athletes, who had private fortunes, versus working-class athletes, who had to earn money to live and train. Sport …

Focusing On Wounded Collective Identity: Toward A Regional Interpretation Of Religious Processes In Central And Eastern Europe, András Máté-Tóth Jul 2022

Focusing On Wounded Collective Identity: Toward A Regional Interpretation Of Religious Processes In Central And Eastern Europe, András Máté-Tóth

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Excerpt: "Defending the value system of Christian Europe, defending the nation with the help of God, and defending the nation against nationalism. Three recent statements from three different countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Such ideas and avowals lay the provocative groundwork to take a closer look to the points of connection between religion and security.

I have two theses to put forward, aiming to make them understandable and discussable. The first is that the region Central and Eastern Europe (hereafter CEE) can be appropriately interpreted in the theoretical framework of wounded collective identity. The primary marker of the region …

Reading Igor Stravinsky's Poetics Of Music In Christian Higher Education, John Macinnis, Mark Peters

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

This article presents the composer Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971) as an historical educator in the context of the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures on Poetry at Harvard University (1939–1940), published as The Poetics of Music in the Form of Six Lessons. As music professors at North American institutions of Christian Higher Education, the authors each read Stravinsky’s Poetics with students in music classes. We describe here our different pedagogical methods and how we employ Stravinsky’s Poetics to form students with Christian approaches to culture-making.

Engineering Education In Developing Nations: Progress On The School Of Engineering At Northrise University In Ndola, Zambia, Jeff Gladstone, Gitogo Churu, John Tixier, Nolan Van Gaalen

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

The engineering and technology capabilities of developed nations continues to advance and to be a major driver of the economies of those nations. Developing nations recognize this reality, and they accordingly recognize the importance of nurturing the growth of their own countries’ STEM capabilities. Engineering education in developing nations is thus a critical need; but it is work that, for a variety of reasons, tends to be under-resourced by developing nations themselves as well as by potential participants from developed nations. As followers of Jesus, we sometimes find our hearts stirred on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Christ …

Tlamachiliztlahtolçaçanilli: A Performance Translation Of The Náhuatl "Wisdom-Discourse Fables" From The Manuscript Of 1558, Willard Gingerich Jul 2022

Tlamachiliztlahtolçaçanilli: A Performance Translation Of The Náhuatl "Wisdom-Discourse Fables" From The Manuscript Of 1558, Willard Gingerich

Department of English Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The 10 page Náhuatl manuscript included at the end of the so-called Codice Chimalpopoca and commonly referred to since 1903 as Leyenda de los soles, “Legend of the Suns,” or the “Manuscript of 1558,” is a fundamental witness to indigenous Nahua- Mexica memories of their own cosmogony and earliest history as they recalled these things some twenty-five-plus years into the colonial era. As supplement to the later Anales de Cuauhtitlan manuscript (ca. 1570-73) which accompanies it in the Chimalpopoca, the 1558 manuscript provides a privileged view of Nahua-Aztec genesis myths, from a Mexica informant. The narrative frame of this retelling …

A Thematic Exploration Of The Liberation Of Identity Through Indigenous Self-Determination: Themes Of Native American And Alaska Native Identity, Martha Fiskeaux Jul 2022

A Thematic Exploration Of The Liberation Of Identity Through Indigenous Self-Determination: Themes Of Native American And Alaska Native Identity, Martha Fiskeaux

Dissertations

Strong ethnic identity is associated with overall well-being, resilience to change, and higher self-esteem (Kiang et al., 2006; Martinez & Dukes, 1997; Umaña-Taylor, 2003; Yip & Fuligni, 2002) and serves as a protective factor against the stress associated with discrimination (Alvarez & Kimura, 2001; Phinney et al., 1998). Given the historical and systemic barriers faced by the Native American and Alaska Native population, including the history of genocide, colonization, and intergenerational trauma, the development of a strong Indigenous ethnic identity is a necessary area of research focus. Specifically, Native American and Alaska native individuals are 3.5 times more likely to …
