“Adams’ Law” And The Placement Of Esse In Pliny The Younger, Thomas Keeline Aug 2022

“Adams’ Law” And The Placement Of Esse In Pliny The Younger, Thomas Keeline

New England Classical Journal

J. N. Adams showed that in Latin of the first century BCE, the verb esse does not necessarily gravitate to “second position” within a phrase; i.e., its placement is not in line with Jacob Wackernagel’s “law of enclitics.” Instead, esse tends to cliticize on—immediately follow—the focus of the phrase. By examining all instances of forms of esse in Plin. Ep. 1 and 10, I show that Adams’ observation still holds true ca. 100 CE. In a pedagogical epilogue, I offer some thoughts on the implications of such subtleties for the teaching and learning of Latin today.

De Sallustio Latine Praelegendo: Causae, Rationes Et Consilia Docendi, Jorge Tárrega Garrido

New England Classical Journal

Jephthah's Daughter: A Hebrew Foreground For Jesus' Passion In Matthew, Hanna Elizabeth Seariac Aug 2022

Jephthah's Daughter: A Hebrew Foreground For Jesus' Passion In Matthew, Hanna Elizabeth Seariac

Theses and Dissertations

While there are key differences between Jephthah's daughter's story and that of Jesus, not least the difference in gender of the sacrificial victims, this thesis posits that both the similarities and differences between these two accounts can enrich readings of Jesus' death in the gospel of Matthew. A careful comparison of the narrative of Jephthah's daughter with Jesus' Passion narrative in the gospel of Matthew leads to the conclusion that Jesus' death should be interpreted as a human sacrifice. Reading Jesus' death as a human sacrifice and locating it in that socio-religious context makes his death indicative of a transactional, …

Putting On A Fronto: Persona And Patterns Of Language In Fronto’S Correspondence, Peter G. Barrios-Lech Aug 2022

Putting On A Fronto: Persona And Patterns Of Language In Fronto’S Correspondence, Peter G. Barrios-Lech

New England Classical Journal

The subject of this chapter is the language of letters exchanged between Fronto and correspondents, specifically those linguistic means by which Fronto and his epistolary correspondents construct a persona and maintain and negotiate relationships. Analysis of the frequency of (Latin to Greek) code-switches, the diversity, or range of unique, address-terms, letter openings and closings used, and the type and frequency of requests show how Fronto’s relationship with Marcus Aurelius changes over time; and offer us one way to measure differences in Fronto’s epistolary relationship with the other correspondents.

On Teaching Sallust In Latin: The Why And The How, Jorge Tárrega Garrido Aug 2022

On Teaching Sallust In Latin: The Why And The How, Jorge Tárrega Garrido

New England Classical Journal

There exist many pedagogical methods we can use to examine, expound and explain ancient authors to our students. In this paper I propose an alternative approach to teach Sallust in an undergraduate setting, with explanatory aids, exercises, tests and quizzes. The latter result not from quick consideration, but from daily use and application in my own classes. In addition, I give reasons why it is helpful to teach Latin in Latin and what advantages it has for students who have learned well the grammar and have moved on to reading and analysis of the ancient texts. Students who had had …

Automated Identification Of Astronauts On Board The International Space Station: A Case Study In Space Archaeology, Rao Hamza Ali, Amir Kanan Kashefi, Alice C. Gorman, Justin St. P. Walsh, Erik J. Linstead

Art Faculty Articles and Research

We develop and apply a deep learning-based computer vision pipeline to automatically identify crew members in archival photographic imagery taken on-board the International Space Station. Our approach is able to quickly tag thousands of images from public and private photo repositories without human supervision with high degrees of accuracy, including photographs where crew faces are partially obscured. Using the results of our pipeline, we carry out a large-scale network analysis of the crew, using the imagery data to provide novel insights into the social interactions among crew during their missions.

Documenting Difficult Cases: A Mixed Method Analysis, Thomas Daniel Knight Aug 2022

Documenting Difficult Cases: A Mixed Method Analysis, Thomas Daniel Knight

History Faculty Publications

This Special Issue of Genealogy examines the use of evidence, documentation, and methodology in family history and genealogical studies, and welcomes case studies that examine how to document individuals and relationships. A critical component of scholarly research focusing on the study of particular individuals or groups entails correctly identifying those individuals Historians, genealogists, historical demographers, and scholars in other disciplines sometimes undertake this sort of analysis. Often, research is uncomplicated if the research subject remained in a particular geographical area, or left a clear evidentiary trail, but what happens when historical documents do not clearly identify the research subject? Utilizing …

Incarnational Librarians: Liaisons Moving Into The Neighborhood, Ellen Hampton Filgo

The Christian Librarian

The concept of “incarnational ministry,” which is often taught in cross-cultural ministry or missions training, offers practical value to academic liaison librarianship, namely: getting out of the library and going to where the users are, being a life-long learner, and modeling humility during interactions with patrons.

Haitian Migrants Housing Solutions And Stability In San Diego, Jean Jeremie Aug 2022

Haitian Migrants Housing Solutions And Stability In San Diego, Jean Jeremie

McNair Summer Research Program

This research examines the housing solutions developed by Haitian migrants living in San Diego. San Diego has seen a spike in the number of asylum seekers since the Biden administration recently let migrants into the country after the controversial “Remain in Mexico” 2019 policy. The region has become a stopping point and major port of entry for those wishing to enter the United States of America. After a long journey, a long waiting period in Mexico, and at times imprisonment, Haitians often encounter harsh living conditions upon entering the U.S. A central challenge for Haitian families arriving in San Diego …

No One Should Have To Give Birth Alone: An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Community-Based Doula Programs Serving Ethnic Minorities In San Francisco, Maria Margaret Nelson Aug 2022

No One Should Have To Give Birth Alone: An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Community-Based Doula Programs Serving Ethnic Minorities In San Francisco, Maria Margaret Nelson

Master's Projects and Capstones

Adverse birth outcomes for both the parent and the child disproportionately affect people of color. Evidence demonstrates that one of the ways to mitigate these negative consequences is through the utilization of a doula, a trained birth companion that is not a medical provider but whose role it is to physically and emotionally support the patient through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Community-based doula programs, where the doula is of the same cultural background as the client, are particularly effective in improving birth outcomes in communities of color by providing culturally competent care and helping to navigate a healthcare system that …
