The Colbert-Walker Site (22le1048): History And Archaeology Of A Chickasaw Home, Council House, And Travelers’ Stand, Raymond Taylor Doherty
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In late 1813, at a time of increasing violence on the Southern frontier, Chickasaw leader George Colbert (Tootemastubee) left his home and ferry on the Natchez Trace to move back to relative safety in the heart of the Chickasaw Nation. He returned to the place that had once been his father’s plantation and made what he described as a “shelter from the weather.” He later hired skilled craftsmen to build a large and finely carpentered new home on the site. The Colbert-Walker site (22Le1048), near present-day Tupelo, Mississippi, has long been said to be the location of this structure, which …

Inner Song Phenomenological Description Of A Musical Object Of Phantasy, Ellen Moysan
Inner Song Phenomenological Description Of A Musical Object Of Phantasy, Ellen Moysan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is the phenomenological description of a musical object of phantasy I call “inner song,” i.e., the music that the musician “sings in his or her head” while practicing his or her instrument. It describes the specific inner song of a single musician playing a melodic instrument, and rehearsing in a solipsistic situation. The description is based on three resources: my personal experience as a cellist; the third person experiences of other musicians I have interviewed on that topic since 2010; and the Husserlian corpus. Each chapter starts with excerpts of interviews focusing on specific aspects the inner song. …
Weathering The Storm: Navigating Urban Ecologies Of Communication In Times Of Crisis, Austin Hestdalen
Weathering The Storm: Navigating Urban Ecologies Of Communication In Times Of Crisis, Austin Hestdalen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project explores cities as urban ecologies of communication in which crises emerge and are given significance within the dialogic relations cultivated among public actors attempting to make a living, together, within the shared historical-cultural contexts of everyday life. To describe cities as urban ecologies of communication is to describe them in terms of urban communication and its interdisciplinary foundations in the study of rhetoric, philosophy, planning, policy, architecture, sociology, geography, and media. The first chapter introduces the challenges of urban risk and crisis management within the complex ecologies of communication constituted by cities and reviews how ‘risk’ and ‘crisis’ …
Without Permanence: Mapping Multi-Genre, Cross-Disciplinary Frameworks For Trans* Studies, Jesse Jack
Without Permanence: Mapping Multi-Genre, Cross-Disciplinary Frameworks For Trans* Studies, Jesse Jack
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project takes a cross-disciplinary and multi-genre approach to Transgender (Trans*) Studies to proliferate diverse and ambiguously-gendered representations of trans* experiences across time. It identifies the emergence of rhetorical intertextuality in recent trans* literatures as a discursive response to the biopolitical regulation and erasure of ambiguously-gendered, trans* experiences. It identifies the intersecting influences of twentieth- and twenty-first-century medical paradigms, surveillance apparatuses, popular trans* autobiographies, and archives in representing and exceptionalizing certain trans* experiences over others. In contrast, this project engages in a close reading of Pajtim Statovci’s Crossing (2016) and Andrea Lawlor’s Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl …
'Bleeding-In-The-World': A Qualitative Study Of Self-Cutting And Blood, Sadie Mohler
'Bleeding-In-The-World': A Qualitative Study Of Self-Cutting And Blood, Sadie Mohler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is an existential, phenomenological study of the role and meaning of blood in self-cutting. Using in-depth, open-ended interviews with participants who self-cut, the author gathered data on the multisensorial experience of blood and bleeding in self-cutting. Data analysis was organized around the lifeworld existentials of corporeality, temporality, spatiality, communication, and relationality. The impact of blood and bleeding across each lifeworld dimension emphasized highly relevant, and previously unstudied, aspects of the lived experience of self-cutting. The six themes identified and explored are (a) blood as an animate abject; (b) bleeding and control; (c) bleeding is a process and the …
Rendering Documentary Portraiture: An Interrogation Of Archival Discourse Through A Critical Exploration Of Nineteenth Century Stage Actress Charlotte Cushman’S Material Memory, Skyler Sunday
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Visual depictions of nineteenth century stage actress Charlotte Cushman, such as photographs, engravings, and painted portraits assist researchers in re-envisioning her both as an actress and as a person, but what do her remaining archival possessions further reveal to researchers about her memory? How do different objects operate as portraits that allow the researcher to tap into and remember specific moments and memory? How does the effort to preserve memory take different forms? This project argues that, when viewing the archive through its stored objects, our collective notion of portraiture can be expanded and used to interrogate existing methods of …

Review Of: Our Amish Heritage—Publishing Committee Of The Geauga Amish Historical Library, Dan Raber
Review Of: Our Amish Heritage—Publishing Committee Of The Geauga Amish Historical Library, Dan Raber
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
The booklet, Our Amish Heritage, succeeds admirably in its stated goal of being a general history suitable for parochial schools or home use. The overall flow of the narrative reads well, not going into great detail anywhere but pointing out highlights in a nearly 500 year attempt at the Anabaptist, then Amish, people literally living Christ’s commandments.

Review Of: Grounded Upon God’S Word: The Life And Labours Of Jakob Amman—Andrew V St. Marie And Mike Atnip, Osiah Horst
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
This book is an easy read for the average person, and has adequate footnotes, bibliography, and photos for the interested student. It relies heavily on John D. Roth’s “Letters of the Amish Division” for sources. While it is quite factual, it presents facts in story form. The book focuses on Amman’s life, not just on the Amish division. It is part of the “Cross Bearers Series” which is designed to bring to today’s youth, stories of role models from history. Other books in the series introduce Conrad Grebel and Michael Sattler in a similar easy reading format.
Review Of: Heaven Will Heal: Eternal Perspectives In The Life And Times Of Oregon Bishop, John P. Yoder. Iowa To The West Coast, 1885-1975—Mary (Gingerich) Kropf, Paul Smucker
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
Heaven Will Heal is a history of the life and times of John P. Yoder written by John’s granddaughter. John wrote and received numerous letters in his lifetime and saved all his letters that he received. After John’s death his son Glenn also saved the letters. When John’s granddaughter Mary gained access to the letters and postcards, she read them carefully, and she decided to use these letters as a basis of telling the history of her grandpa, the Anabaptist community in the southern Willamette Valley, and the Harrisburg Mennonite Church from its beginnings to the 1970s. Review Of: Hoofbeats In The Bluegrass: Thirty Years Of Mennonite History In Western Kentucky, 1987-2017—Elvin S. Eberly, Donald Martin
Review Of: Hoofbeats In The Bluegrass: Thirty Years Of Mennonite History In Western Kentucky, 1987-2017—Elvin S. Eberly, Donald Martin
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
When Elvin Eberly sat down to write Hoofbeats in the Bluegrass (that is to say, horse-and-buggy people in Kentucky), he, as an Old Order Mennonite, wrote about his Old Order Mennonite community. The theme of the book is community. Throughout the book, references are made to building projects, accidents that happened, and the funerals and weddings that occurred within the community. In fact if this factual matter were removed, the writing would be reduced to a pamphlet of little stories. It is those humorous stories and community events that will intrigue readers outside of the Old Order community. Hoofbeats in …
Review Of: Blessed Are The Peacemakers: Small Histories During World War Ii, Letter Writing, And Family History Methodology—Suzanne Kesler Rumsey, G.C. Waldrep
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
Suzanne Kesler Rumsey’s Blessed Are the Peacemakers is, on the surface, the reconstructed story of the author’s paternal grandparents during World War II. The saga of Benjamin and Miriam Kesler, members of the Dunkard Brethren Church in northern Indiana, in and out of the Civilian Public Service (CPS), is one that will be familiar to most readers of twentieth-century North American Anabaptist history: a young husband called into CPS service as a conscientious objector, the young wife he left behind. What makes it richer is the trove of letters back and forth between the young couple that the author has …

Review Of: Vignettes 2020: Anabaptist Women Writers—Sheila Petre And Gabriella Showalter, J.P. Miller
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
Vignettes, compiled and edited by Sheila Petre and Gabriella Showalter, is a fascinating text. It is a book that was written by, and is intended for, Anabaptist women writers. The book is a collection of articles that profile around 400 Anabaptist women writers from more than 15 countries. The book provides many resources for aspiring writers; it recommends books on writing, such as The Elements of Style, and contains a directory of all the women profiled in this book. Review Of: The Amish Incident: Rural Conflict And Compromise And The Amish Incident: Wisconsin V. Yoder—Kelly Rundle And Tammy Rundle, Jewel Yoder Kuhns
Review Of: The Amish Incident: Rural Conflict And Compromise And The Amish Incident: Wisconsin V. Yoder—Kelly Rundle And Tammy Rundle, Jewel Yoder Kuhns
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
Award-winning documentary filmmakers Kelly and Tammy Rundle have created two short films focusing on historical conflicts over parochial Amish education in Wisconsin and Iowa. Their first film, The Amish Incident: Rural Conflict and Compromise, released in 2019, follows the rising controversy in rural Buchanan County, Iowa, from the bitterly contested 1961 vote to merge two school districts in neighboring towns Oelwein and Hazleton to the dramatic 1965 “incident” when education officials tried to forcibly transport Amish students to the local public school. The second film, The Amish Incident: Wisconsin v. Yoder, released in 2021, picks up the story …
Symposium Review: Awake, O Church!: A Serious Look At Christian Outreach—Barry Grant, Christopher Petrovich, Jennifer Anderson
Symposium Review: Awake, O Church!: A Serious Look At Christian Outreach—Barry Grant, Christopher Petrovich, Jennifer Anderson
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
True to its pithy title, author Barry Grant calls the Christian church to awaken from its spiritual slumber, the result of North American materialism manifesting itself on the foreign mission field. Awake, O Church! is one of few recent appraisals of plain Anabaptist mission, and one of the only that indicts the plain Anabaptist church communities and networks that send missionaries from the pen of an active missionary. This book is remarkable in that it is a sustained critique of one of the most heavily endowed Protestant humanitarian organizations in the world, and is published by a reputable plain Anabaptist …
Symposium Review: The Right Church: From A Seeker To A Finder—Peter Hoover, Sheila Petre, Osiah Horst
Symposium Review: The Right Church: From A Seeker To A Finder—Peter Hoover, Sheila Petre, Osiah Horst
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
[...] Across 264 compelling pages of earnest semi-autobiographical work, Hoover sketches a poignant picture of many disintegrating organizations among which move small vibrant flames of living hope. He tells the story of a young man seeking for answers about Christianity, and the religious entities within it. He intersperses his narrative with glorious scripture passages and hymns, and includes wisdom borrowed from his uninhibited correspondence with the leaders of many different Anabaptist groups. The main character is part of “only a small group—a very small and shrinking group—of Old Order Mennonites trying to keep the ‘songs of Zion’ alive with all …

Symposium Review: The Teacher's Manual—Jennifer Anderson, Keri Yoder, Caleb Yoder, Jonathan Erb
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
A compilation of an experienced teacher’s advice and wisdom, The Teacher’s Manual conveys tons of information in a methodical, serious tone. The author, Jennifer Anderson, has taught in a variety of settings including parochial schools, Christian day schools, and public schools. Her pupils came from a range of Conservative Mennonites, Old Order Mennonites, Amish, Amish-Mennonites, Dunkard Brethren, and non-Anabaptists. She has taught every grade level. Her book is directed at Amish and Mennonite teachers and tackles not only the oft-heard problems and misunderstandings but also wades into the sticky stuff teachers face. She not only lists potential problems but also provides …
Symposium Review: Amish And Old Order Mennonite Schools: A Concise History—Joseph Stoll; And The School By The Cornfield—Samuel Coon, Jewel Yoder Kuhns, Daniel L. Yoder
Symposium Review: Amish And Old Order Mennonite Schools: A Concise History—Joseph Stoll; And The School By The Cornfield—Samuel Coon, Jewel Yoder Kuhns, Daniel L. Yoder
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
Joseph Stoll, in Amish and Old Order Mennonite Schools: A Concise History, and Samuel Coon, in The School by the Cornfield, provide two very different perspectives on the struggle to establish Anabaptist schools. The books contrast primarily in their geographic and chronological scope. However, both write about parochial schools with a voice sympathetic to the vision of Amish and Mennonite school founders. They use similar sources, drawing on newspaper accounts, published Amish schools’ histories, and Amish and Mennonite periodicals, as well as personal recollections from individuals involved in school conflicts. [First paragraph.]
The Ramifications Of Wisconsin V. Yoder: Six Foundational Problems With A 50-Year Old Landmark Case, Torah Bontrager
The Ramifications Of Wisconsin V. Yoder: Six Foundational Problems With A 50-Year Old Landmark Case, Torah Bontrager
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
My essay introduces the 1972 United States Supreme Court case Wisconsin v. Yoder to readers who don’t come from a legal background who want to understand the negative ramifications of the case and how it affects their individual rights. Yoder says that children of practicing Amish don’t have a right to any education and future other than one inside the Amish Church. My essay deconstructs the case from the perspective of an Amish American woman— yours truly — who escaped in the middle of the night at age 15 because of how this ruling has shaped the Amish people. I …
The Gravamen Of Wisconsin V. Yoder At Fifty, 1972-2022, Benjamin King
The Gravamen Of Wisconsin V. Yoder At Fifty, 1972-2022, Benjamin King
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
After an arduous journey of more than four years that Wallace Miller, Jonas Yoder, and Adin Yutzy began in New Glarus, WI, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its landmark decision in Wisconsin v. Yoder , 406 U.S. 205 on May 15, 1972. In affirming the Supreme Court of Wisconsin’s decision reversing the convictions of Miller, Yoder, and Yutzy (Respondents) for violating the compulsory school attendance statute, the U.S. Supreme Court found that enforcement of the statute violated the Respondents’ rights pursuant to the free exercise of religion clause conferred by the First Amendment and made applicable to the states …
Feminism At The Borders: The Navigation Of Gender Issues By Mexican-American Women Along The U.S.-Mexico Border, Carolina Fuentes
Feminism At The Borders: The Navigation Of Gender Issues By Mexican-American Women Along The U.S.-Mexico Border, Carolina Fuentes
Capstone Collection
Feminist movements have taken on various iterations since they first began, particularly as the movements expanded beyond predominantly Western and white spaces. This research study explores how gender equality is perceived and navigated along the U.S.-Mexico border area, taking into account the various Latin American and U.S. feminist developments that have shaped the current landscape of the border. 11 Mexican and Mexican-American women living in U.S.-Mexico border states were interviewed to gain an understanding of their definitions, perceptions, and opinions on feminism and gender-related issues given their bicultural contexts. These conversations revealed that ideas of rights and equality were central …
Introducing A Bit Of Active Latin Into Your Current Advanced Latin Classroom: Usus Loquendi Et Audiendi De Terentio Catulloque, Ronnie Ancona
Introducing A Bit Of Active Latin Into Your Current Advanced Latin Classroom: Usus Loquendi Et Audiendi De Terentio Catulloque, Ronnie Ancona
New England Classical Journal
The purpose of this paper is to show how easily and profitably one can introduce a small portion of active Latin into an upper-level Latin classroom through select questioning and response that draws directly from and reinforces grammatical structures and forms, as well as key vocabulary, from the students’ advanced Latin texts under study. Use of active Latin supports SLA (Second Language Acquistion) research about the value of spending time “in the language” in the classroom. The current Standards for Classical Language Learning recognizes this value as well.
Latin Vocabulary Knowledge And The Readability Of Latin Texts: A Preliminary Study, John Gruber-Miller, Bret Mulligan
Latin Vocabulary Knowledge And The Readability Of Latin Texts: A Preliminary Study, John Gruber-Miller, Bret Mulligan
New England Classical Journal
Studies have found a strong correlation between vocabulary knowledge and L2 reading comprehension. This preliminary study of the readability of Latin texts considers how common measures of lexical complexity (word length, word frequency, lexical sophistication, lexical density, and lexical variation) can inform instructors about what texts have the least (and most) lexical complexity. By defining several key measurements of Latin lexical complexity, we establish a provisional account of the lexical difficulty of some familiar Latin texts that are frequently taught in elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels, and propose LexR, a single, informative, integrated score that provides a sense of …
The Utility And Representational Opportunity Of Latin Novellas, Teresa Ramsby
The Utility And Representational Opportunity Of Latin Novellas, Teresa Ramsby
New England Classical Journal
This paper argues for the use of the Latin novella in Latin, educational contexts, particularly within the K-12 classroom. The design of Latin novellas corresponds to features associated with Comprehensible Input: offering a limited and repeated vocabulary, and providing compelling narratives. The many Latin novellas now published broaden the opportunity for narrative selection by Latin students, giving students a choice in what they read. Moreover, many narratives feature central characters that increase the representation of layers of society typically found in Latin textbooks or in the ancient, classical sources. By way of example, Cloelia, by Ellie Arnold, receives focus …
