The Self-Work Of Planetary Justice, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer
The Self-Work Of Planetary Justice, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer
Faculty Scholarship
A necessary part of planetary justice is self-work, restoring or forming our being truthful, consistent, dependable, and accountable people. Planetary justice – so far typically associated with vast, geological scales of space and time – involves an intimate dimension, too. We can work on it wherever we are. Moreover, self-work and planetary justice intertwine historically and conceptually. The historical context for self-work involves the histories of violence that led to the breakthrough of the planetary as a category of thought about justice. Facing this, the essay notes areas for further reflection, study, and action.

Incarcerated Bodies – Embodied Autoethnography In Prison, Shulamit Kitzis
Incarcerated Bodies – Embodied Autoethnography In Prison, Shulamit Kitzis
The Qualitative Report
Prison is a study field in which everyone – inmates, guards, and prison researchers – experiences powerful sensory stimuli comprised of sounds, sights, and smells in a crowded, closed space. Yet traditional academic research has socialized researchers to “wash away” their physical and emotional feelings for fear they would jeopardize the scientific nature and validity of their studies. Nevertheless, at times in a prison setting, the researchers’ bodies are the only tool that enables them to document what goes on; so much so that ignoring their bodies and emotions leads to a loss of valuable information. Using embodied autoethnography (EA), …

“Chains Weigh Heavy”: Body Mapping Embodied Experiences Of Anxiety, Priya Vaughan Dr, Anna Tewson, Patricia Morgan Dr, Katherine M. Boydell Professor
The Qualitative Report
Anxiety has both cognitive and somatic dimensions as is ubiquitous at a population level. We report on an arts-based research workshop gathering data on embodied experiences of anxiety and non-anxiety. We developed an innovative short body mapping workshop to collect data and undertook thematic analysis to analyse textual and visual data. 35 body maps were produced. “Tightness,” “pain,” and “heaviness” were the most frequently expressed embodied sensations of anxiety. By contrast, when not feeling anxious, participants’ bodies primarily felt “energetic,” “ordered,” and “open.” Anxiety was most frequently felt in the stomach, head and heart. 35 Participants mostly used an abstracted, …
Engaging Bhakti As/In Translation: An Outline Of A Methodological Approach To Analyse Ranade's Views About The "Saints And Prophets Of Maharashtra", Rinku Lamba
Articles
The analysis in this article suggests that M G Ranade’s reflections in his essay about the ‘Saints and Prophets of Maharashtra’ are significant because they offer a site to unravel shifts from a premodern to a modern conception of moral order on the Indian subcontinent, in the context of the encounter with colonialism. For its role in allowing such unravelling, and for the way it permits attention to hitherto neglected dimensions of Ranade’s comparison between bhakti and the Protestant Reformation, this article argues for the value of investigating Ranade’s reflections through the framework of translation. While doing the above, the …

A Typeface For Tolkien: Hammer Uncials In Tolkienian And Gaelic Texts, Eduardo Boheme Kumamoto
Journal of Tolkien Research
This article explores the use of Victor Hammer's Uncial Typefaces for texts either by Tolkien or related to his literature, and, at the same time, for Gaelic texts. First, Tolkien's issue with the typefaces selected for the dust-jacket of The Lord of the Rings is recounted. Then, Victor Hammer's typefaces are presented along with examples of them in Tolkienian texts. Lastly, some reasons that might explain such usage are proposed.

Paths To Equity: Parents In Partnership With Ucedds Fostering Black Family Advocacy For Children On The Autism Spectrum, Elizabeth H. Morgan, Benita D. Shaw, Ida Winters, Chiffon King, Jazmin Burns, Aubyn Stahmer, Gail Chodron
Developmental Disabilities Network Journal
Racism and ableism have doubly affected Black families of children with developmental disabilities in their interactions with disability systems of supports and services (e.g., early intervention, mental health, education, medical systems). On average, Black autistic children are diagnosed three years later and are up to three times more likely to be misdiagnosed than their non-Hispanic White peers. Qualitative research provides evidence that systemic oppression, often attributed to intersectionality, can cause circumstances where Black disabled youth are doubly marginalized by policy and practice that perpetuates inequality. School discipline policies that criminalize Black students and inadequate medical assessments that improperly support Black …

Poetic Theory And Practice In The Ming And Qing Dynasties : Poetry As Autobiography, Grace Fong
How to Read Chinese Poetry Podcast
An outstanding development in this period is the practice of writing poetry as autobiography, as the record of a life story. We will discuss the life-long collection of over 1000 poems by an eighteenth-century woman poet to illustrate her poetic self-construction.

Saved Babies, Dead Doctors: Settler Colonial Anxiety And Strategic Rhetorics Of/In The Anti-Abortion Cultural Narrative, Cassidy Ellis
Saved Babies, Dead Doctors: Settler Colonial Anxiety And Strategic Rhetorics Of/In The Anti-Abortion Cultural Narrative, Cassidy Ellis
Communication ETDs
In this dissertation I identify and analyze the rhetoric that creates the anti-abortion cultural narrative and locate its toxic secrets by exposing the logics and ideologies the secrets obscure and sustain, and finally, ascertaining the strategic rhetorics that enable the narrative’s power and centrality. There are two primary arguments proposed in this dissertation. First, I argue that settler colonialism is the primary toxic secret nestled just beneath the surface of the anti-abortion cultural narrative. It is the secret that animates and sustains the narrative in service of maintaining settler colonial social order via control and maintenance of the population. Second, …

The Efficacy Of Shared Spiritual Practices Toward The Formation Of Families At Mayfair Church Of Christ In Huntsville, Alabama, Matthew P. Flynn
DMin Project Theses
This February 2023 Doctor of Ministry project thesis at Lipscomb University presents the results of a qualitative research study of the efficacy of shared spiritual practices in the formation of families at Mayfair Church of Christ in Huntsville, Alabama. Once a week for six weeks, I met with six Mayfair families with adolescents, where they were able to learn about and practice spiritual disciplines consistently together over the course of six weeks. The selected disciplines engaged different God-given human faculties intended to unite us with God and with each other. After each session, families were then invited to practice the …

Teaching French Civilization And Culture Through A Multicultural Perspective In The Classrooms Of French Language Students In Jordanian Universities, Samer Ali Al-Hammouri
Teaching French Civilization And Culture Through A Multicultural Perspective In The Classrooms Of French Language Students In Jordanian Universities, Samer Ali Al-Hammouri
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
With the advent of the communicative methodology, the goal of learning and teaching foreign languages is to acquire a communicative skill aimed at making students able to behave appropriately when communicating with speakers of these languages. This communicative skill is not limited to grammatical or linguistic aspects, but also includes cultural elements that seem to be of great importance. Through our experience, it seems to us that the practices of learning and teaching French as a foreign language, in the Jordanian university context, do not give an important place to cultural elements. This study aims to encourage teachers to focus …
The Peculiar Use Of Punctuation In A.R. Ammons' "So I Said I Am Ezra", Malek Zuraikat, Faisal Rawashdeh
The Peculiar Use Of Punctuation In A.R. Ammons' "So I Said I Am Ezra", Malek Zuraikat, Faisal Rawashdeh
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
In his poem "So I Said I am Ezra," A.R. Ammons employs a peculiar nopunctuation strategy to represent his speaker's unique terms of association with the natural elements. This kind of punctuation marks, we argue, allows for two opposed, yet interdependent, interpretations of the poem. While the one interpretation underscores the speaker's progressive but eventual isolation from Nature, the other explains his growing sense of belonging and resulting mutuality. We trace this ambivalent attitude to Nature in the poem's appropriation of the Romantic mode of poetic meditation and showcase how a twofold standpoint for thematic interpretation can be yielded by …
