Yujie Liao
Yujie Liao
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
Su Shi’s (1037–1101) was banished southward to Huizhou and Danzhou from 1094 (the first year of the Shaosheng era) to July of 1101 (the first year of the Jianzhong jingguo era) when he was summoned back north, which has been known as his Hui-Dan period. Su Shi’s canzheng chidu (personal letters that discuss politics) written during this period became examples of Northern Song dynasty literati getting involved in political affairs through personal correspondence. This article tries to answer the following questions. (1) How were Su Shi’s canzheng chidu special? (2) Was Su Shi’s canzheng chidu merely his writing habit …
Pang Fei Kwok, Ting Choi
Pang Fei Kwok, Ting Choi
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
Yu Yue (1821–1907), courtesy name Yinfu, hao Quyuan, was a prominent philologist in the late Qing dynasty. His representative work Zhuzi pingyi (Commentaries on Pre-Qin Masters) is a masterpiece of Chinese philology. This paper investigates his commentaries in “Guanzi” in Zhuzi pingyi by discussing fourteen examples in detail and rectifies specific existing philological issues therein.
Wenbo Chang
Wenbo Chang
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
This paper investigates the issue of how sanqu composition modifies the social contract of poetic composition in how a text mediated between authorship and social identity through a close analysis of Jia Zhongming’s 賈仲明 (fl. 1343–1422) sanqu songs written in the supplement to The Register of Ghosts (Lu gui bu 錄鬼簿). This paper challenges the conventional reading of Jia’s songs as reliable sources of biographical information on individual playwright to whom those songs are dedicated. It argues instead that they, if read together as a whole, represent a catalogue of various personae Jia constructs for the social role …
Peichen Jin
Peichen Jin
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
Du Fu’s “Going from the Capital to Fengxian County, Singing My Feelings (five hundred words)” has been irrevocably accepted as his denouncement of ganye (begging for favor from high-level officials). However, a close reading of the poem alongside with Tang-dynasty custom of ganye and Du Fu’s attitude toward ganye shows his complex understanding of du chi shi ganye, which cannot be held as evidence of Du Fu feeling ashamed to beg for favor from high-level officials. In fact, not only did Du Fu continue to do so after the An Lushan Rebellion, but his attitude toward ganye also …
Chengjie Zhao
Chengjie Zhao
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
Dai Zhen’s studies on Shangshu (Book of Documents) lasted throughout his scholarship. His earlier works (before 1757, the 22nd year of Qianlong’s reign) include Shangshu jinwen guwen kao (On the Old Text and the New Text of the Book of Documents) and Jing kao (Examinations of the Classics). Shangshu yikao (Explanation of the Meanings of the Book of Documents) is the representative work of his later scholarship (after 1757, the 22nd year of Qianlong’s reign). He appeared to have written Shangshu yikao no earlier than the winter of 1762 (the 27th year of Qianlong’s reign). Shangshu jinwen guwen …

Ella P. Stewart And The Benefits Of Owning A Neighborhood Pharmacy, Randall K. Johnson
Faculty Works
This Essay is the first to explain how and why Ella P. Stewart, who was among the first Black women to earn a doctoral degree in Pharmacy, used her status as a small business owner to protect the limited set of legal rights that were available to African-Americans in the twentieth century. It also describes how Stewart’s early personal and professional experiences informed her subsequent public service career. Additionally, this Essay highlights the various ways that Stewart expanded the real freedoms that Black Americans enjoyed by guaranteeing they received a fair share of public goods or services. It concludes by …

The Sociolinguistics Of Code-Switching In Hong Kong’S Digital Landscape: A Mixed-Methods Exploration Of Cantonese-English Alternation Patterns On Whatsapp, Wilkinson Daniel Wong Gonzales, Yuen Man Tsang
Journal of English and Applied Linguistics
This paper examines the prevalence of Cantonese-English code mixing in Hong Kong through an under-researched digital medium. Prior research on this code-alternation practice has often been limited to exploring either the social or linguistic constraints of code-switching in spoken or written communication. Our study takes a holistic approach to analyzing code-switching in a hybrid medium that exhibits features of both spoken and written discourse. We specifically analyze the code-switching patterns of 24 undergraduates from a Hong Kong university on WhatsApp and examine how both social and linguistic factors potentially constrain these patterns. Utilizing a self-compiled sociolinguistic corpus as well as …

Attitudinal Study Of Users Of Japanese English, Chisato Oda
Journal of English and Applied Linguistics
This paper examines the developmental stage of Japanese English as one of the expanding circle varieties from the attitude perspective. The literature review presents the theories of World Englishes, what Japanese English is, and the previous attitudinal studies on Japanese English. The questionnaire survey was conducted to assess the linguistic attitudes of Japanese English users towards the forms and use of their English. The result suggests that a higher frequency of English use positively affects the acceptability of some of the features of Japanese English, yet at the same time more frequent users of English tend to see the characteristics …

Jing Li
Jing Li
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
With an exploration of the term shihua (rock flowers) in Xie Lingyun’s poem “You Chishi jin fan hai” (On a Trip to Red Rocks I Sailed out on the Sea) as the point of departure, this paper re-interprets the poet’s motivations for seafaring. By investigating the allusions such as yinxia (lunar fire), qiongfa (barren land), and Xuzhou (vacant boat), this paper speculates on the images and texts the poet thought of when writing this poem, tries to analyze the significance of re-organizing these allusions, and in so doing summarizes the poem’s theme. Xie’s three motivations for seafaring include: (1) …
Urban Space, Genre And Subjectivity In African And Latin American Cinema, Matthew Marcus
Urban Space, Genre And Subjectivity In African And Latin American Cinema, Matthew Marcus
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This project studies twelve African and Latin American films from a range of eras and countries, with an emphasis on their treatment of urban space, their manipulation of genre elements, and their approaches to character subjectivity. The analysis draws on major works of urban theory by Henri Lefebvre, Manuel Castells, David Harvey, Jane Jacobs, and others in order to investigate the relationship between cinema and the urban experience. As the films in the study are mostly set in cities that are not discussed by the theorists, the analysis entails testing their theories against the realities of these other settings, as …
Fluidity Of Ptolemaic Tomb Architecture: Third To Second Centuries Bce, Caroline Gerkis
Fluidity Of Ptolemaic Tomb Architecture: Third To Second Centuries Bce, Caroline Gerkis
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The concept of the final resting place, such as the architecture of the tomb, was an important belief that resonated across all ancient cultures. Upon Alexander the Great’s death his successors competed to possess his body, to use it as a symbol of legitimacy to control Alexander's Empire. The one who successfully accomplished this was Ptolemy Lagides (c.367-282BCE). He seized Egypt in 323 BCE by hijacking Alexander’s body, bringing him first to the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis and afterwards interred him in a royal mausoleum in Alexandria. By claiming Alexander's corpse, Ptolemy had set the stage for his eventual …

The Queer Comedy Boom: The History Of Lgbtq+ Stand-Up Comedy, Marcelle Karp
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Stand-up comedy has long been a straight comic’s domain. In the last decade or so, there’s been a seismic shift in that paradigm as more openly queer comics have taken their spot on the stage. This emergence has created a queer comedy boom, where queer comics are centered. There has been scant documentation on the history of queer stand-up comedy; this project does just that. It tracks the historical presence of queer stand-up comedians in the spaces these comics occupy—the stage—from the early 1900s to the current moment of the queer stand-up comedy boom, a comedic goldmine of counterhegemonic content. …

Between Concealment And Revelation: Oblique Modes Of Female Self-Expression In Eighteenth-Century Literature And Life Writing, Sophia N. Sunseri
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines the social landscape of eighteenth-century Britain as one that was especially inimical to women and analyzes instances in literature and life writing in which female characters and historical figures negotiated the various restrictions they faced in social settings by “hiding in plain sight” and devising alternative strategies by which they might be seen and heard: by engaging in what I am referring to as a play between concealment and revelation. I explore texts where female characters who have been silenced and forced to conceal their presence in social situations craft diffuse strategies through which they express themselves …

Beyond The Songs On The Vistula: Chopin And Poland, A Mythical Construction, Juan Carlos Fernandez-Nieto
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Poland and Chopin are two concepts that cannot be separated, for they form an entity of their own. However, the story of both subjects has often been manufactured to offer a view of the patriotism and the connection of Chopin with his country, which promoted the creation of the nation. At the same time, the circumstances that propitiated the rise of nationalism and the social unrest that ended with World War I were the same that promoted the myth of Chopin. Therefore, this research is focused on the analysis of the facts and the context that created the myth of …
Beat Construal, Tempo, Metric Dissonance, And Transgressing The Groove In Heavy Metal, Drew Fleming
Beat Construal, Tempo, Metric Dissonance, And Transgressing The Groove In Heavy Metal, Drew Fleming
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation explores the relationship between the metric practices of heavy metal and the elements and processes of the musical quality known as “groove.” Although heavy metal is not often expressly associated with groove per se, it occupies a historical position within the stylistic milieu for which groove music has established the primary, referential conditions. In order to uncover this connection, then, I begin with an analysis of groove in relation to established groove-music styles, defining it as an embodied and encultured knowledge of a set of cognitive, social, kinetic, aesthetic, and musical behaviors extending in practice from African-American popular-music …

What can I do with what I already have? How can I make of it something beautiful, or useful, or interesting? Over the past two and a half years, I have been creating wall sculptures and collages out of found objects that speak to the history of my family, the way the earth reclaims its space after being used by humans, and how our individual lives have impact beyond our recognition. The people we love, the things we have lost, the garbage and grief we try to bury: it doesn’t go away. It comes back to the surface in shapes …

“Girl Power, Selfies, And Sexiness”: An Investigation Into The Neoliberal And Postfeminist Era Of Influencer Marketing, Amalie A. Werenskiold
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In today’s social media-centered popular culture, fashion, and lifestyle influencers maintain rigid and sexist forms of femininity which are spread to a large consumer base through influencer marketing. Research on postmodern feminism has revealed that the standardized modern woman is supplied with freedom, fun, and sexiness, allowing women to live their lives as they best see fit. Yet not all women are able to experience similar feelings of liberation and gender inequality is still a regular feature of society. This study observes Instagram images, captions, and comment sections of 61 distinct female influencers from the Instagram explore page. The evidence …

Even though bisexual people make up a large portion of the LGBTQ community, because of bi invisibility, they tend to get lost in the cause. This website offers information about bi invisibility, highlights obstacles faced by bisexuals, provides resources for bisexuals, and includes some fun topics for bisexual people. It also has a page of bisexual testimonies: real bi people with real bi stories. There is evidence of erasure and invisibility, especially in children’s books and the field of …
Mood: A Zine Exploring The Value Of Youth-Oriented Media, Patricia K. Paul
Mood: A Zine Exploring The Value Of Youth-Oriented Media, Patricia K. Paul
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Media is a constant, persistent force in human lives that informs and influences through published, broadcasted, and digitally mediated formats. Mass media industries produce and distribute content consumed by diverse audiences, though the facilitators represent only a fraction of the demographics they serve.
Youth denote one of the most frequently misrepresented groups, with very few practical opportunities for young people to make decisions about the texts available to them. A jarring absence of youth participation in media creation at all levels suggests cultural contributions through art exclude young people's authentic perspectives and desires. Moreover, media portrayals of youth cannot adequately …
Haunted Homelands: Mary Hunter Austin's Search For Belonging In California's Central Valley, Aimee M. Maddalena
Haunted Homelands: Mary Hunter Austin's Search For Belonging In California's Central Valley, Aimee M. Maddalena
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
From childhood, Mary Hunter Austin resisted the social conformity expected of a young girl in 1850’s Carlinville, Illinois. Instead, causing her mother to “shed tears of vexation,” she was outspoken, opinionated, and read the “wrong” books, which, according to her mother, “was what made you queer so that people didn’t like you.” Young Mary had a rich inner life and was drawn in a spiritual, mystical way to the minutiae of the natural world. Also, she questioned the strict social structure that caused her mother to be outcast as a widow, while, at the same time, young women were beginning …

Jus Soli And Jus Sanguinis: Politics, Race, Culture, And Citizenship In The Dominican Republic And Haiti, Guido A. Proano
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The promulgation of laws such as the Dominican Republic’s Constitutional Court’s Judgment TC-168-13 serves as a basis upon which to argue the major impediments presented by the Dominican government to deny Haitians and Dominicans of Haitians descent citizenship. The right to citizenship is based on legal principles of jus soli and jus sanguinis and is recognized in a series of international legal documents. Following a Marxist framework, this research demonstrates the uncounted possible relationships between modern social forces and politics that have been working closely following European productions of knowledge for decades against Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent in …
