Fluidity And Inconstancy: Australian Bush Tomatoes As An Exemplar Of Non-Normative Sex Expression, Christopher T. Martine Jun 2023

Fluidity And Inconstancy: Australian Bush Tomatoes As An Exemplar Of Non-Normative Sex Expression, Christopher T. Martine

Faculty Journal Articles

Solanum, a genus of ~1500 global species, is one of the more interesting plant groups in which to study reproductive biology and ecology. Overwhelmingly, species in this group express full cosexuality, where individual plants have flowers containing both fully-functioning “male” (staminate) and “female” (carpellate) organs. However, there have been multiple and widespread evolutionary transitions within the genus to non-normative variations on this ancestral condition. Australian bush tomatoes (ca. 40 species) are especially diverse in this regard, with uncommon variation and combinations of unisexuality and cosexuality -- including, most notably, two sexual systems known as dioecy (unisexual male or female …

Multi-Effects Analog Guitar Pedal, Carson J. Bryan Jun 2023

Multi-Effects Analog Guitar Pedal, Carson J. Bryan

Electrical Engineering

The Multi-FX Analog Guitar Pedal includes the analysis, design, performance, PCB layout, and packaging of an industry-standard effects pedal for an electric guitar. This project takes an analog input signal and utilizes analog circuitry to give the user the option to customize the way that their playing sounds. Effects include the options to add equalization filtering and distortion. The EQ filtering will allow the user to attenuate or gain certain frequencies divided into the 3 standard audio bands: bass (20-300 Hz), middle (300-4000 Hz), and treble (4-20 kHz). The soft-clipping distortion stage will allow the user to move around the …

Talanoa Digital Storytelling As A Culturally Appropriate Method In Palliative Care Health Research: An Evaluation Of The Narratives Of Pacific Families Caring For Older Loved Ones At End Of Life, Ofa Dewes, Kylah Williams, Suamalie Naisali

Pacific Studies

Talanoa is a Pacific concept of dialogue and storytelling that was used as a framework for producing our digital stories. This article sets out an evaluation of a workshop-based process for talanoa digital storytelling (DST) where aiga (family) carers created their own short autobiographic films and injected their voices into the social and public health discourse and knowledge production. Five digital stories were created. Participants were drawn from a cohort of 33 aiga carers in a study investigating the end of life circumstances of Pacific Peoples dying in advanced age, and the experiences faced by their aiga who carry out …

Rebraiding Frayed Sweetgrass For Niijaansinaanik: Understanding Canadian Indigenous Child Welfare Issues As International Atrocity Crimes, Alyssa Couchie Jun 2023

Rebraiding Frayed Sweetgrass For Niijaansinaanik: Understanding Canadian Indigenous Child Welfare Issues As International Atrocity Crimes, Alyssa Couchie

Michigan Journal of International Law

The unearthing of the remains of Indigenous children on the sites of former Indian Residential Schools (“IRS”) in Canada has focused greater attention on anti-Indigenous atrocity violence in the country. While such increased attention, combined with recent efforts at redressing associated harms, represents a step forward in terms of recognizing and addressing the harms caused to Indigenous peoples through the settler-colonial process in Canada, this note expresses concern that the dominant framings of anti-Indigenous atrocity violence remain myopically focused on an overly narrow subset of harms and forms of violence, especially those committed at IRSs. It does so by utilizing …

Romanticism’S Fellow Creatures, Alastair Hunt, Ron Broglio, Katey Castellanos, Mario-Ortiz Robles Jun 2023

Romanticism’S Fellow Creatures, Alastair Hunt, Ron Broglio, Katey Castellanos, Mario-Ortiz Robles

English Faculty Publications and Presentations

This panel opens up innovative ways of thinking about Romanticism and “the problem of sharing our earth with other creatures.” Over the last couple of decades, the crisis in human relations with animals has deteriorated to the point that it has become increasingly recognized as a constitutive part of the global environmental crisis. Like the climate crisis, the “animal crisis” originates with the emergence of the industrial form of capitalism in Britain around the turn of the nineteenth century. Appreciation of this historical constellation can and should become the basis of a renewed Romantic animal studies. However, reading Romanticism as …

Tigers Or Strawberries: Seizing The New Mission Opportunities Before Us For Church And Campus, Ronald Pickell Jun 2023

Tigers Or Strawberries: Seizing The New Mission Opportunities Before Us For Church And Campus, Ronald Pickell

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

T he context of my ministry is LIFE Adventist Church in Berkeley, California, a campus church near the University of California, Berkeley. I also provide leadership direction for Adventist Public Campus Ministry across the North American Division. This paper addresses the ministry challenge and opportunity for our mission forward following the COVID-19 Pandemic. For many churches and mission programs, the COVID-19 Pandemic was a huge interruption of their entire operation. In many ways, for us COVID-19 was more of a disruption rather than a complete interruption of ministry. This paper discusses the factors that contributed to the continuation of our …

The "Parental" Push: A "Parenting" Approach To Young Adult Ministry, Andrew Stojanavic Jun 2023

The "Parental" Push: A "Parenting" Approach To Young Adult Ministry, Andrew Stojanavic

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Discipling young adults to become spiritually mature, capable, and confident leaders in the church requires intentionality. It does not take place naturally, no matter how attractive the setting may be. This is especially important due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on young people in our church. This intentionality must be exercised by spiritual parents within the church, and only if they have an investment in and personal relationship with the young adults themselves. Giving young adults a “parental” push to get seriously involved in the life of the church asks them do something they might find uncomfortable, …

Covid. Crisis, Conflict, And The Cross: Making Disciples During A Pandemic, Omwocha Nyaribo Jun 2023

Covid. Crisis, Conflict, And The Cross: Making Disciples During A Pandemic, Omwocha Nyaribo

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Intimate desires characterize one’s last moments with family, friends, or colleagues, often expressed verbally to the hearers. John 17 is one such moment. Jesus passionately, through prayers, shared the desire that His followers be united, for unity in Christ is the essence of soul-winning— the world believing in Jesus (Jn 17:21,23). The disciples of Jesus also contended among themselves concerning greatness. In the history of the Christian Church, unity among the brethren has been elusive. Within the Seventh-day Adventist church, we have witnessed strife among the brethren because of divergent views throughout our history. Such strife is not an emerging …

Hanging Out On The Block(Chain): Decentralized Autonomous Organizations For Small Groups And Faith Communities, Lyle Notice

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

T he future of organizations is changing from a top-down leadership model to a shared autonomous approach. Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) will revolutionize governance structures, groups, and organizations of any kind. In what way could this influence and improve churches and ministries within those churches such as small groups? This paper explores the impact that Blockchain Technology, cryptocurrency and DAOs can have on small groups and faith communities.

Switzerland’S Banished Children, Una Suseli O'Connell Jun 2023

Switzerland’S Banished Children, Una Suseli O'Connell

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Over a one hundred year period a practice known as verdingen (indentured servitude) operated in Switzerland. Children were removed from their families and sent to work on farms. It is estimated that between 1860 and 1960, one hundred thousand children were verdingt in this way, a quarter of them in the Canton of Bern. Local parishes paid farmers a monthly allowance to provide disadvantaged children with board and lodging. Although some treated their charges well, countless children suffered terrible hardship over many years. A veil of silence fell across entire communities as clergy, social workers and villagers chose to ignore …

Challenges To Swiss Democracy: Neutrality, Napoleon, & Nationalism, Thomas Quinn Marabello Jun 2023

Challenges To Swiss Democracy: Neutrality, Napoleon, & Nationalism, Thomas Quinn Marabello

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The year 1291 is considered the birth of Switzerland as we know it. Yet this is not entirely correct, since it was when the Swiss Confederacy was formed. This defensive alliance between some cantons that would expand over time did not mean Switzerland was a unified nation-state. Most of Europe in 1291 was stuck in the Middle Ages with few unified nations existing at the time. 1648 was an important year for Switzerland and the rest of Europe. The Treaty of Westphalia marked the end of the Thirty Years’ War that involved most of the continent over religion and politics. …

Survivor Accounts Of Sexual Violence In The Holocaust And Rwandan Genocide: A Comparative History, Marisa Silva

Honors Projects

This research seeks to analyze and understand the approach and treatment of victims of sexual assaults stories and accounts using case studies of the Holocaust and the Rwandan genocide. Research was conducted by collecting and reading first-hand accounts of survivors and their experiences of sexual assault, then analyzing the historical response following the events. The two case studies are synthesized and compared in this project to understand which attributes of political and social policy effected the reception of stories of victims and witnesses of rape and assault. Both genocides are affected by unique struggles in collecting witness accounts, as well …

The Women Of Justice: Narratives Of Women Attorneys In California During The 1960s And 1990s, Sarah Zion Jun 2023

The Women Of Justice: Narratives Of Women Attorneys In California During The 1960s And 1990s, Sarah Zion

Master's Theses

This thesis interviews two women attorneys who have not previously shared their stories to relate their experience of going to law school and entering the field after graduation. The study of women lawyers and their stories is not a new topic, however, there is a focus in the scholarship to only explore the tales of the women who reached the big firsts, such as first female lawyer or first female judge. By providing interviews of women who have not reached these big accomplishments, the field gains a more rounded understanding of the history of female lawyers. The two women interviewed …

Victor Pelevin And Eurasianist Geopolitics, Tatiana Filimonova Jun 2023

Victor Pelevin And Eurasianist Geopolitics, Tatiana Filimonova

Dartmouth Scholarship

The first decades of Victor Pelevin’s writing coincided with the burst in popularity of neo-Eurasianist and neo-imperialist ideas. This paper traces the various forms that Pelevin’s treatment of civilizational and geopolitically focused ideologies has taken over the course of his career. His preoccupation with these ideas ranges from inconspicuous reflection of the Eurasian phenomenon to Eurasianism’s intensifying critique, and, eventually, to a more comprehensive engagement with concepts of classical geopolitics. If early on Pelevin’s portrayal of neo-imperialists and their ideas has been largely satirical (Empire V, 2006), in the 2010s his texts began to demonstrate a deeper entanglement …

Zhan Huang Jun 2023

Zhan Huang

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

When Han-dyansty emperors deceased without any male offspring, a regnant-monarch was chosen as the heir to the throne. Adopting a regnant-monarch into the royalty bore association with the implementation of rituals and affected court politics. However, there were no institutionalized rituals for adopting a vassal king or conferring honorific titles to his biological parents in the early Han dynasty, which resulted in many debates over the ritual appropriateness. The confusion had led to political turmoil insofar as it contributed to the fall of the Western Han regime to a certain extent. Liu Xiu (Emperor Guangwu of the Eastern Han …

Yunfeng Chen Jun 2023

Yunfeng Chen

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Many have discussed the issue of jiaping bu quqi (the family is too poor [for him] to marry a woman) in the “Biography of Liu Xie” in the History of Liang. However, this paper re-reads it in association with relevant historical records, which suggests room for further analysis and deeper interpretation. For example, reading jiaping bu quqi with its syntactical context yields a new understanding. Xie zao gu (Xie was orphaned at an early age [by his father death]) resulted in his family’s poverty. Bu quqi and yi shamen Sengyou (attachment to Buddhist monk Sengyou) echo duzhi haoxue …

Patricia Sieber, Xuezhao Li Jun 2023

Patricia Sieber, Xuezhao Li

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

This article proposes a new typology of the sanqu corpus. The discussion analyzes a cross section of sanqu songs in terms of how they engaged with language registers, on the one hand, and how they recontextualized existing motifs and media, on the other. Specifically, the article focuses on three subsets of songs: songs that foreground everyday vignettes, songs that celebrate festive occasions at court, and songs that revisit the exemplars of Chinese literature, history, and religion. The article suggests that everyday songs and court-oriented songs prized the aesthetic of immediacy, while certain mixed-register songs more explicitly exhibited differently oriented …
