A Study Of The Problem Of Suffering And Chastening, Lester A. Wetzstein May 1957

A Study Of The Problem Of Suffering And Chastening, Lester A. Wetzstein

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The problem of this study was to show that the ideas of suffering and chastening individually are derived from more than one original term and are universal realities throughout biblical history on the basis of terminology which appears in most books of the Bible, that both suffering and chastening are realities in human experience, and that suffering comprises one of the essential instruments in the greater purpose of the experience of chastening.

The reality of suffering is one of the most universal facts of human experience. From a child's first suffering of hunger pangs to the experience of death this …

Contrition, Theodore Engelder, Herbert J. Bouman May 1957

Contrition, Theodore Engelder, Herbert J. Bouman

Concordia Theological Monthly

Confusion regarding the concept contrition can only confuse consciences. "Before the writings of Luther appeared, the doctrine of repentance was very much confused ... the people were able neither to comprehend the sum of the matter nor to see what things especially were required in repentance, where peace of conscience was to be sought for" (Ap XII 5). If the wrong place in the order of salvation is assigned to contrition, if it is not allowed to function in its proper sphere, if it is drawn into the doctrine of justification, or if it is made the chief factor in …

A Study Of The Biblical Basis For Tithing, John W. Anderson May 1957

A Study Of The Biblical Basis For Tithing, John W. Anderson

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Tithing is included as a portion of a Christian's obligation to the Church by most Christian groups of today. A considerable amount of material has been written on the subject. These materials vary in approach and interpretation. It was the author's purpose to find the Biblical basis and teaching for tithing, both in the Old and New Testaments.

The repeated references to tithing in the Scripture mark it as a subject worthy of special study. The adverse view of some Christians, such as Dr. Charles Fuller and Joseph H. Cohn of the American Board of Missions to the Jews, toward …

The Pastor As Administrator Of Christian Education, Harold J. Elmer

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

We are living in one of history's most serious periods in a fast shrinking world where time and space are the essence. In time because of the great acceleration in the progress of science, in space because of a fast shrinking world that puts the nations elbows sharply one against another causing widespread disruption, confusion, diversion and aggression. Temporary expedients and the necessity to be first in the race in temporal importance has caused most Americans to forget their spiritual heritage and with new temptations and frustrations the.y either turn against all forms of religion to secularism and a materialistic …

The Relation Of Missionary Education To The Local Church, Katherine A. Melick May 1957

The Relation Of Missionary Education To The Local Church, Katherine A. Melick

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Missions today are throbbing with interest. New fields of missionary endeavor are opening up every day, while a few long established fields are closing, or have already closed. Missionary doors are open today to every church which desires their inclusion. Missions made alive through the avenue of missionary education could be made the bloodstream through which life could flow into the heart of the local church, and make every artery, concomitant to every organization or phase of the church program, gain in strength thereby.

The Paradox In Perspective, Martin H. Scharlemann May 1957

The Paradox In Perspective, Martin H. Scharlemann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Paradox" is an ancient word and an honorable one. The Greeks applied it to anything that seemed contrary to public opinion or strange and marvelous. In this latter sense the term occurs in the New Testament. It was heard on the lips of the multitude that saw the healing of the palsied man. "We have seen παοάδοξα today," they said in astonishment and awe (Luke 5:26). In Latin authors "paradox" came to mean an apparent contradiction. This is today its most common meaning in ordinary speech, although we must hasten to add that the Christian continues to feel in it …

The Poetic Style Erich Kastner, John Winkelman May 1957

The Poetic Style Erich Kastner, John Winkelman

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The existing studies of the poetry of Erich Kiistner deal almost exclusively with aspects of its content, whether in an ideational or a concrete sense, and have at best only peripheral reference to the esthetic realization of this content. That is, these studies consider the poems primarily in their function as means of communication or even as unwitting autobiography, and in effect ignore the poems in order to "penetrate" to that which they communicate or reveal.

Yet the relation of external and internal in any esthetic object is just the reverse: one would have to penetrate past that which the …

The History Of Montpelier From 1864 To 1925, A. Mckay Rich May 1957

The History Of Montpelier From 1864 To 1925, A. Mckay Rich

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

There have been many histories written on the great movements of American History and most states have had their histories, but almost endless localities have been neglected. Yet it is in the localities that we find the greatest stories and problems of the states, nations, and world in their embryonic stages. There is no better place to begin a realization of the heritage of America than in the story of one's own locality. It is for these reasons that I have chosen to write this paper upon the history of Montpelier, Idaho.

An Investigation Of The History Of The Virginia Manufactory Of Arms, James N. Haskett May 1957

An Investigation Of The History Of The Virginia Manufactory Of Arms, James N. Haskett

Honors Theses

The first years of freedom were not calm ones for the people of the new Republic. This was as true in Virginia as elsewhere. in the State itself there was the ever present danger of slave insurrection and the Wars of the French Revolution which raged in Europe were in grave danger of spreading into this hemisphere. This situation caused the State to make provisions to secure four thousand stands of farms for its militia in 1796. This proved to be a very difficult task, for the European hostilities had seriously limited the amount of arms available.

Though Virginia had …

The Essential Elements Of The Sinaitic Covenant, Holland Jones May 1957

The Essential Elements Of The Sinaitic Covenant, Holland Jones

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In the study of the New Testament Kerygma we can recognize that the life, death, resurrection, and exaltation are one great act of God by which He made the New Covenant. However in our study of these events we separate them for convenience. So in our study of the Old Covenant we can recognize that the deliverance, giving of the Law, ratification of the Covenant, and conquest of Canaan are one great act of God by which He made the Old Covenant. But here too we separated these events for the purpose of clarity in investigating them. And for want …

The Concept Of Education In The Light Of The Theology Of D. Martin Luther, Won Yong Ji May 1957

The Concept Of Education In The Light Of The Theology Of D. Martin Luther, Won Yong Ji

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This thesis is a study of the theological implications of Luther’s emphasis on “education” and an examination of the contributions if any, which Luther made to education, eventually derived from such an emphasis, to his subsequent generations. Its purpose is to survey briefly his theology in order to determine the theological significance or implications of his underlying pedagogical principles and practices. “What is Luther‘s view on education?” is the final goal of this study.

This study should prove to be a value to Lutheran educators in particular in that attempts to bring Lutheran educational practices into harmony with the educational …
