Neural Correlates Of Emotion Word Processing In Bilinguals: An Fnirs Study, Daniela Andrea Ortega Manchego Apr 2024

Neural Correlates Of Emotion Word Processing In Bilinguals: An Fnirs Study, Daniela Andrea Ortega Manchego

Theses and Dissertations

Despite increasing interest in the interface between emotion word processing and bilingualism, the representation of valence during emotion word processing in the bilingual brain remains unclear. In the present study, we used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate the neural correlates of written emotion words in a first (L1) and a second (L2) language. Native English (16) and native Chinese (16) bilingual participants rated emotion words in their first and second language while we recorded their brain activity. Our results show distinct neural processing patterns between L1 and L2, with the former eliciting increased overall activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal …

Still Life Happens, Mary Ann Crabtree Apr 2024

Still Life Happens, Mary Ann Crabtree

Theses and Dissertations

After dedicating over two years to pursuing an MFA degree focused on ceramics and sculpture, I find myself transported back to a familiar setting from my past: a tableau reminiscent of what remained in the dining space after four young children finished a meal and exited the room. Revisiting the scene recalls happy times despite the disorder. What helped maintain my sanity during the relentless repetition of the every-day-long task was the realization that every day, innocents are learning to become aware of the world around them. For my thesis exhibition, I created a tableau as a loud reminder of …

Celebration of Research

We used three bacterial hosts: Mycobacterium smegmatis, Microbacterium foliorum, and Gordonia terrae, to isolate novel bacteriophages from soil samples. We named these phages, created high titer lysates, and purified their DNA genomes. We have archived the high titer lysates at Northwestern College and the University of Pittsburgh. The genomes of three of our phages were sequences at the University of Pittsburgh and we will be sequencing the remaining genomes this summer. Additionally, we are planning to image our phages with transmission electron microscopy at the University of Iowa or Nebraska yet this semester.

The Last Moon: Delving Into Philippine Culture In A Disney Perspective, Thea Angelee Davis Apr 2024

The Last Moon: Delving Into Philippine Culture In A Disney Perspective, Thea Angelee Davis

Celebration of Research

Disney’s cultural movies have undeniably impacted the world, with films like Moana and Encanto introducing specific cultures to the global audience and receiving widespread recognition. Inspired by this influential way of cultural storytelling and noticing the lack of animated movies that represent my native country, the Philippines, I created The Last Moon as a project in ENG250LC. The creation process involved extensive researching into Philippine legends and developing those in a story and storyboard scenes. Ultimately, I designed all the visual graphics that resemble Disney’s iconic style. By integrating elements of the Philippines into a familiar Disney storytelling framework, I …

How Culture And Language Impact The Way We View Healthcare, Linsy Gonzalez Apr 2024

How Culture And Language Impact The Way We View Healthcare, Linsy Gonzalez

Celebration of Research

The United States is a growing multilingual and multicultural country. Although beautiful, it does present challenges in different areas of life particularly in the healthcare system as there are differences in language and/or cultural beliefs and practices. This leads to asking how cultural differences can impact how we think of healthcare. To challenge and understand this question more, a qualitative study was conducted based on interviews from two different healthcare facilities located in the same town of Sioux Center, Iowa—Promise Community Health Center (PCHC) and Sioux Center Health (SCH)—with interpreters, patients, and providers to understand the role each person has …

Jewish Liturgics In Christian Worship: A History Of Jewish Festal Liturgics And A Proposed Recession Of The Christian Liturgical Year Into The Larger Judeo-Christian Calendar, Josiah Troutner Apr 2024

Jewish Liturgics In Christian Worship: A History Of Jewish Festal Liturgics And A Proposed Recession Of The Christian Liturgical Year Into The Larger Judeo-Christian Calendar, Josiah Troutner

Celebration of Research

Though a Judaic religion, Christianity quickly abandoned many of the ceremonial, festal, and liturgical practices of its parent religion. In this paper I argue this to be primarily due to an Augustinian reading of Torah in the Pauline epistles in which it is seen as a tyrannical force that can be distinguished into moral, ceremonial, and judicial components, only the moral of which must still be observed by Christians. In this paper, I will discuss the historical, cultural, and religious background of several Jewish holidays in advocation of their theological value for the larger Judeo-Christian community. I will also seek …

So That The Church May Be Built Up: An Analysis Of 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, Alissa Hugen Apr 2024

So That The Church May Be Built Up: An Analysis Of 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, Alissa Hugen

Celebration of Research

In 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, Paul lists several spiritual gifts observed in the Corinthian church. In this section and its literary contexts, Paul utilizes an ABA’ form to emphasize to the Corinthians the proper use of the spoken gifts, which are wisdom, knowledge, prophecy, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues as listed here. This project dives in depth into the ABA’ form present in chapters 12-14, as well as the cultural context of the Corinthian church at the time Paul wrote his letter. An understanding of the Corinthian culture as seen here can be used to instruct the modern church …

Platonic Intelligence And The United States Constitution, Elizabeth M. Iglesias Apr 2024

Platonic Intelligence And The United States Constitution, Elizabeth M. Iglesias

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation demonstrates the Platonic logic that informs the order of value and design elements of the U.S. Constitution as defended in the Federalist Papers. The dissertation has four movements that reveal the Platonic logic of the U.S. Constitution. The first takes up the repudiation of tyranny in defense of a way of being called ordered liberty in both Plato and the Federalist. The second takes up the commitment to the supremacy of intelligence over power, an order of value that is distinctly Platonic and permeates the design logic of the U.S. Constitution. Intelligence in this context is understood as …

Seminoles, Soldiers, And Settlers: Identity And Power On The Florida Frontier, Jean Louise Lammie Apr 2024

Seminoles, Soldiers, And Settlers: Identity And Power On The Florida Frontier, Jean Louise Lammie

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project uses an historical archaeological approach to analyze the processes of cultural negotiation between disparate social groups living in a remote borderland in the early to mid-nineteenth centuries. Florida, first colonized by the Spanish in the 1500s was passed to the United States in 1821 as part of the young nation’s nascent Manifest Destiny. The Seminoles experienced multiple colonial conflicts, dealt with new diseases, and selected aspects of European culture to incorporate into their daily practices of lifeways.

Archaeological studies of culture change tend to focus on the product of colonial interactions rather than the processes of change that …
