Purpose Statement: Several studies have shown that aerobic exercise can have a positive impact on alleviating symptoms experienced by individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). Despite this evidence, the potential benefits of exercise for both PD patients and their care partners (PD dyad) remain unexplored. This research project investigates the effectiveness, therapeutic collaborations, and physical outcomes of a virtual reality (VR) tandem cycling program specifically designed for PD dyads.

Methods: Following approval from the Prisma Health Institutional Review Board, individuals with PD were identified and screened by clinical neurologists. The pre-testing measures for PD dyads (N=9) included emotional and cognitive status …

High school bands have evolved greatly since the first band boom in the early 1920s. Beyond the performance responsibilities and commitments to football and sporting events, bands have their own cultural elements that only band members, band staffs, and families of band students truly understand. This thesis will demonstrate that high school band culture since the 1920s developed alongside the changing fortunes of the U.S. military. Accordingly, U.S. military history shaped the evolving culture of high school marching bands and other youth performing arts groups while these civilian youth groups in turn embedded and reinforced elements of U.S. militarism in …

One of the main goals of philosophy of science is to give a proper account of scientific theories and their structure. One way that accounts of the structure of scientific theories can be distinguished is by the mathematical or logical structures that they involve. For instance, syntactic accounts of scientific theories hold that theories are axioms in a logical framework, whereas semantic accounts are more liberal in the range of mathematical and logical structures they take as pertinent to the structure of scientific theories. The recent resurgence of the language of thought (LOT) hypothesis has drawn much attention. The history of philosophy and cognitive science has provided us with various versions of LOT. From Sellars to Fodor, theorists have offered us considerations on the vehicles, content, and functions of such a representation format. However, it’s been more than 50 years since Fodor’s publication on LOT (1975), and the resurgence suggests that we need a modern iteration of LOT to fit with recent developments in the study on cognition. Thesis: The main goal of the British government in New Zealand was to assimilate the ingenuous Maori population through institutions such as the legal and educational systems. While the Maori by and large did adopt western clothing, housing, language, and property laws; they also retained a large amount of their culture.

Conclusions: British colonization was largely effective, but the Maori retained a large amount of their culture.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been used since 1950 but it was largely overlooked by the public until 2022. Current discussions about AI center around academic integrity. This report seeks to understand if AI can be handled, used, or accepted in Lipscomb’s academic environment as a beneficial aid to writing and research, without actively doing these tasks for an individual. Generative AI is a neural network, which enables it to receive input, gather information from a database of existing content, and create new content [2]. Due to the nature of generative AI, its beneficial contributions to academia are extremely limited.

Amid the Nazi persecution of various Christian sects, Heber J. Grant, the president and living prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS), declared to his congregation in Salt Lake City that Mormons in Germany were able to gather freely. The LDS Church has a long history of displaying its pro-Jewish beliefs, which should have made them natural enemies of the Third Reich. Yet, the Latter-Day Saints leadership, through a logical and carefully fostered survival strategy, offered legitimation to the Nazi state for the sake of self-preservation. The current feminist discourse surrounding female sexuality leaves a lot out of the equation. The reality is that the debate of female sexual choice often results in a dead end, and is far removed from actual women's lives. Drawing on feminist theories of fantasy, submission, sexual scripts, and pornography, I explore the ways in which indulgence in submission impacts women's docility in the real world. Through analysis of feminist literature, research, and various Internet forums, I identify three different theories of submission, and the plausibility of their isolation from oppressive consequences in the public sphere.

Our hair texture plays an important role in our self-identity and esteem. The whiteness of beauty standards has controlled how women see their hair, whether or not it’s beautiful in its natural state. It is important to ask how hair texture influences self-identity and esteem. Answering this question, I analyze Nappily Ever After, focusing on the role that mother figures play in developing girls’ self-identity concerning their hair. I further situate this film by contextualizing it with children’s books on hair and self-esteem. With the objective of understanding why some people turn to religion–specifically Christianity–in the face of hardship, mortality, and grief, I examined the writings and wrestlings of three Spanish Catholic mystics of the 15th and 16th centuries: Saint Teresa of Ávila, Saint John of the Cross, and Sister Teresa of Cartagena. Using the model of psychiatrist Elizabeth Kübler-Ross, who proposed that most people follow a similar path through grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, the writings of the abovementioned mystics can be interpreted as their way of processing grief on the journey to acceptance. Saturday Night Live holds exceptional cultural significance as a media outlet. Analyzing sketches of presidential debates in 2008, 2016, and 2020, this article dives into its portrayals of female candidates, and how sexist representation of these politicians can shape voters' views on these candidates. I look at the sketches featuring Kamala Harris, Sarah Palin, and Hillary Clinton. By highlighting the sexism within our media, we can better understand the barrier it plays for female candidates.

I also wanted to give enough context to this timeframe of Egyptian history being an unofficial Ottoman tributary state under the control of the British by 1882. As If It Were One Day is a multimedia art installation that chronicles patterns of light, movement, and sound, channeling the fluidity of time within the newborn phase of familial living. After giving birth to my daughter, I spent the next seven weeks observing these elements and recording them via video. The resulting art installation acknowledges my efforts to navigate my current life as an artist and a mother, my past battle with postpartum depression, and my consequent gravitation toward light.

This thesis examines societal norms and unwritten rules for boys as they mature. It is hypothesized that most boys deal with emotional suppression or dissociation in varying degrees of severity due to traumas during their developmental years. This dissociation creates an inability to express their own emotions adequately and therefore affects their ability to empathize with others. A lack of vulnerability may also be a common challenge among boys society still considers vulnerability weakness. This pattern continues into adulthood and is then perpetuated through posterity and future generations. This thesis explores through a qualitative case study how using art integration …

The ways in which music therapy impacts healing have been studied and observed in many ways in the past. However, most do not go the step further to consider how music therapy can be used to specifically help stroke patients recover lost function. In this paper, a video game design is proposed in which a combination of music therapies is integrated into a multi-level activity that incorporates repetition, reward, and strengthening of both physical and cognitive abilities. The purpose of the report’s research is to test and analyze whether Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms can be used as beneficial tools for individualized learning at Lipscomb University without violating the Academic Integrity Policy. The methods section evaluates AI on the scopes of accuracy, analytical thinking, and adaptability. The results demonstrated how each platform responded to the prompts within the lines of the scope. South Korea has one of the best education systems, as Korean students tend to excel in multiple academic areas in comparison to the national averages of other countries (WENR, 2018). However, due to the high academic and societal pressures placed on Korean students to succeed in school, South Korean teachers have become increasingly overwhelmed with handling parent and student demands. Due to the updated Korean Child Welfare Act (2014), Korean teachers now face claims of child abuse from parents either for reprimanding students who were initially combative in class, or for denying parents’ request for after school extracurricular services for …
