This research delves into the examination of voice qualities among Iraqi Arabic speakers, encompassing both genders and age range from 20 to 45. The study employs a comprehensive auditory-perceptual analysis utilizing the Vocal Profile Analysis (VPA) scheme developed by Laver, Wirz, Beck, and Hiller (1981), later refined by Beck (2018). Data collection involves two methods: narrative pictures and open-ended responses. This research investigates the occurrence of dialect leveling in the gelet-speaking area, focusing on a specific variable: the first vowel in the faʕʕa:l / faʕʕa:la pattern nominal forms. The primary objectives include examining the direction of leveling, exploring factors influencing or contributing to the process, identifying the gender associated with this phenomenon, and the age group where leveling is most prominent. In this thesis, I study the dialectical relation between the Utopian imagination and a reality perceived in every way as antagonistic to hope. In the first chapter, I present Ernst Bloch’s Utopian vision, as presented in The Principle of Hope, which offers an exposition of the author’s Romantic Marxism. The second chapter engages Oscar Wilde’s only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, demonstrating how a life devoted to self-gratification only results in the constant deferral of Utopian longing, and how, undone, Dorian’s demise opens up Utopian possibilities as anticipated by Bloch. Violence and war can be incited, and so can peace. This volume shares select addresses and responses from Seton Hall University’s 2/7/23 conference “Inciting Peace From The Inside Out.” A multi-disciplinary range of scholars each addresses how reconciliation processes grow from spiritual dynamics. Multiple religious traditions teach contemplative praxes that prioritize and nurture personal reflection oriented toward peace. Social conflicts divide, so engaging them with a partisan orientation only serves to escalate harmful rifts.
