When literary scholars examine narratives about Osaka, they have largely focused on the relationship between Osaka and Tokyo or the representations of Osaka in the national imagination. The approach tends to neglect the role that minority groups play in creating Osaka as a city of local cosmopolitanism. Centering on how Osaka writers have represented four underclass and working-class neighborhoods in the city, this dissertation scrutinizes how the narratives complicate the images of Osaka constructed by the national government and challenge the official narrative of a homogeneous Japan. Rapid progress in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), in which AI technologies can now perform human tasks, e.g. hold advanced conversations, cook, clean, and navigate harsh terrain, blurs the line between humans and robots. The emergence of advanced AI technologies suggests that AI programs may develop consciousness in the near future, prompting important questions: if AIs attain abilities to perform the same tasks and exercise capacities traditionally limited to humans, do they deserve similar moral status? In September 2024, New York fashion brand Sandy Liang faced backlash online for its girlish style codes as part of a broader debate about trends that reinforced gender stereotypes, like tradwives, “girl dinner” and the coquette aesthetic. However, critics misjudge the brand, which is grounded not in internet trends but in the designer’s real-world experiences. In addition, thanks to the complex fashion landscape, no garment is inherently political but dependent on the wearer’s intentions and styling choices.

Black Media’S Struggle To Survive, Truth Headlam

The Lomax family got into the media business 13 years ago, just before it cratered for traditional editorial publications and radio stations.

The fall has been steep, especially for Black media. In 1978, when President Jimmy Carter announced an initiative to increase the number of radio stations owned by people of color, only about 1.2% – or 69 out of 8,196 – radio stations were minority owned. But after the Carter administration gave minority-run stations a boost, that number more than doubled to 182 radio stations owned by Black people alone by 1990.

Ottoman-Period Molluscs From The Harbor Area, Yafo (Jaffa), Inbar Ktalav

'Atiqot

This report discusses 558 malacological remains retrieved from the Yafo harbor excavations. The assemblage includes Mediterranean shells and Indo-Pacific bivalves and a single land snail, mostly dated to the Ottoman period. The Pinctada margaritifera remains were probably production waste of the European button industry, which reached Yafo en route to Jerusalem and Bethlehem, where it was used as raw material for inlaying religious souvenirs.

A Glass Bottle From The Days Of The British Mandate From The Harbor Area, Yafo (Jaffa), Brigitte Ouahnouna

The glass fragments retrieved from the excavations in the Yafo harbor date to the British Mandate period. They include mass-produced brown and green glass bottles, colorless glass windowpane fragments, two incomplete colorless glass salt-and-pepper sets, and two fragments of colored glass bracelet. One mold-made bottle bears a manufacturer’s mark in Hebrew, indicating a local production.

A Late Ottoman Ceramic Assemblage From The Harbor Area, Yafo (Jaffa), Anna De Vincenz

The pottery retrieved from the excavations in the Yafo harbor dated mostly to the Late Ottoman period, from the eighteenth to the beginning of the twentieth century. The Ottoman-period ceramics consist of hard-paste ware, porcelain and stoneware vessels, such as plates, bowls, coffee cups and bottles, mainly imported from Europe, as well as earthenware vessels imported from Turkey and Greece, and glazed cooking pots from southern France. Black Gaza Ware and other coarse ware vessels were locally produced. Ottoman clay smoking pipes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were found abundantly in the excavation, while only a few narghile heads …
