Secondary String Students’ Perceptions Of The Role Of Self-Efficacy In Mitigating Their Musical Performance Anxiety: A Collective Case Study, Mary E. Henton Jan 2025

Secondary String Students’ Perceptions Of The Role Of Self-Efficacy In Mitigating Their Musical Performance Anxiety: A Collective Case Study, Mary E. Henton

Theses and Dissertations--Music

Musical Performance Anxiety (MPA) is a multifaceted psychological condition that arises before, during, or after musical performance and presents a significant obstacle for young musicians, particularly secondary string students. Closely linked to the spotlight effect and social anxiety, MPA has worsened among youth following the COVID-19 pandemic due to decreased social interaction, both of which have had adverse effects on students’ mental health. Despite teachers’ awareness of MPA’s prevalence, music education programs often lack instruction in specific coping mechanisms to address it, and many students do not seek support or treatment.

The purpose of this study was to describe the …

A Twenty-First Century Approach To Darius Milhaud's Saudades Do Brasil, Paige H. Crain Jan 2025

A Twenty-First Century Approach To Darius Milhaud's Saudades Do Brasil, Paige H. Crain

Theses and Dissertations--Music

French composer Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from February 1917 to November 1918. Milhaud’s experience in Rio was overwhelmingly positive, and several of his works were influenced by this period of his life, one being a suite for solo piano titled Saudades do Brasil, Op. 67. Inspired by Brazilian popular music, this piece is an example of exoticism, a trend of writing music based on cultures other than the composer’s own. Considering that exoticism historically has the potential to perpetuate harmful stereotypes or generate false information, this research delves into Saudades do Brasil, exploring …

Performance Guide To Select Twentieth-Century French Organ Works Based On Te Deum, Margaret Maria Lerose Jan 2025

Performance Guide To Select Twentieth-Century French Organ Works Based On Te Deum, Margaret Maria Lerose

Theses and Dissertations--Music

The Gregorian chant Te Deum originated over 1500 years ago and was the basis of many vocal and instrumental compositions. Segments of the chant were also used as motives and themes for improvisation. Students at the French organ school studied both improvisation and composition. This study examined three exemplary pieces that resulted from the French organ school traditions: Improvisation sur le Te Deum (1930) by Charles Tournemire, Hymne d’Actions de Grâces, Te Deum (1934) by Jean Langlais, and Paraphrase sur le Te Deum (1946) by Marcel Dupré.

After a brief chapter on the history of the Te Deum chant, biographical …

Professional Experiences Of Disabled Music Therapists: An Adapted Multiple Case Study, August Lily Tuggle Jan 2025

Professional Experiences Of Disabled Music Therapists: An Adapted Multiple Case Study, August Lily Tuggle

Theses and Dissertations--Music

Literature about disability often focuses on disabled people as recipients of professional services and there is scant literature about disabled professionals. Although music therapists work primarily with disabled individuals, there is little research on or from the perspectives of disabled music therapists. A growing body of qualitative research, grey literature, and media platforms provides perspectives from the disability community regarding music therapy. Disabled individuals both within and outside the profession critique common music therapy attitudes and practices that conflict with the expressed needs of the disability community. However, much of this literature contains the perspectives of one individual or a …

Luis Serrano Alarcón’S Second Symphony For Wind Orchestra Background, Analysis, And Conductor’S Guide, Adam P. Miller

Theses and Dissertations--Music

Luis Serrano Alarcon’s composition, Second Symphony for Wind Orchestra (2017), is a significant work for the wind ensemble. Written as a tribute to the great Romantic composers it was inspired by their symphonies. It is neo-classical in form but contains a neo-Romantic language and a compositional style unique to the Spanish composer.

The purposes of this dissertation are: 1.) to provide biographical details regarding Luis Serrano Alarcon and his musical career; 2.) to place the Second Symphony for Wind Orchestra in perspective within other modern works for wind band and within the composer’s own catalogue; 3.) to elaborate on the …

Ber Anena’S Vagina Diaries, A Review: An African Student’S Encounter With The American Health System, Akua Agyeiwaa Denkyi-Manieson

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This work delves into the disappointment, indifference, and pretense experienced by the narrator when she sorts the American healthcare system. It also addresses the struggles immigrants face, particularly from Africa, as they navigate a healthcare system that often requires them to prove their pain and worthiness of attention. The narrative emphasizes the importance of not generalizing the entire healthcare system based on a single negative experience while acknowledging the profound impact on one's perception of the system. Furthermore, it explores the paradox between the availability of better resources in America compared to the narrator's home country and the mistreatment and …

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Akan of Ghana have a proverb that translates, “When a thing is not placed in its rightful place, it will fall down,” and “Respect must be accorded to whom respect is due.” They also say, “The one behind walks in the footsteps of the one in front.” These Akan proverbs capture the literary journey encountered in the works of Chigozie Obioma, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and NoViolet Bulawayo in The Fishermen, Purple Hibiscus, and We Need New Names, respectively. Their narratives reflect an undeniable acknowledgment of the literary path cleared by one man often hailed as the …

Public Art Coordination: Shaping The Irish Arts Landscape, Jennifer Haughton Jan 2025

Public Art Coordination: Shaping The Irish Arts Landscape, Jennifer Haughton

Doctoral

Appointing public art coordinators responsible and accountable for programming and commissioning in the public sphere is a growing trend internationally. My aim in this PhD thesis is to undertake an inquiry into the practice of how public art coordination facilitates artists in producing ambitious public art works. Appropriating Mary Parker Follett’s (1866–1933) concept of multiple leadership in addition to curatorial, rights, and management theory, I argue for an increased accommodation of public art coordination as a public leadership service arising from the construction sector. Adopting Ricoeurian hermeneutics alongside vignettes, my thesis constitutes a deep dive into the habitat and culture …

Puccini’S Manon: A Holistic Approach To Role Preparation And Execution, Sandra Oman Farren Jan 2025

Puccini’S Manon: A Holistic Approach To Role Preparation And Execution, Sandra Oman Farren

Doctoral

The fulcrum of this thesis is operatic role preparation and execution, an investigation into how the conscientious singer-actor can ‘become’ the character of ‘Manon’ in Giacomo Puccini’s 1893 opera, Manon Lescaut. Adopting a multi-stranded research strategy, encompassing traditional methodologies, a series of lived experience interviews with international operatic practitioners, and a survey of live performances in 2023–2024, the actuality of performing this complex role is considered, with recommendations and conclusions drawn from a multiplicity of sources.

Agency, Index & Process: Investigating The Role Of The Artist’S Body In Digital Sculpture Production, Alan Magee Jan 2025

Agency, Index & Process: Investigating The Role Of The Artist’S Body In Digital Sculpture Production, Alan Magee

Doctoral

Contemporary Digital Sculpture has emerged out of recent developments in digital art, 3d modelling and virtual modes of production. These advances range from the creation of more powerful software and hardware systems to the to nascent XR sectors, and the potential for materialisation through technologies such as 3d printing, laser-cutting, or CNC1 machining. However, critical discourse remains predominantly focused on the end product, often overlooking the embodied labour processes inherent in its creation. As revealed through indexical traces of the artist’s body, these processes encapsulate the gestures, actions and subjective agency of artistic activity. Consequently, with the limitations of digital …

Critical Theory And The Decline Of American Patriotism, Caron L. Norton Jan 2025

Critical Theory And The Decline Of American Patriotism, Caron L. Norton

Master of Arts in Classical Studies

Abstract

CRITICAL THEORY AND THE DECLINE OF AMERICAN PATRIOTISM

Caron Norton

Southeastern University, 2025

Nationwide there has been a progressive decline in patriotism since the turn of the 21st century. Instead of growing in affection towards their country, more and more American citizens reach adulthood frustrated and angry with the United States and its heritage. Some become consumed with hatred. Rather than honoring America’s forefathers, Americans have torn down and desecrated statues and symbols from the past. Where did this antipatriotic fervor come from? How did Americans become disillusioned? This shift in mood can be directly attributed to the rise …

Fiesta On Shuffle, Tristan William Niskanen Jan 2025

Fiesta On Shuffle, Tristan William Niskanen

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

This thesis is a linked short story collection about a character named Thom, told in first person. In 52 short pieces, Thom travels around different places on a seemingly aimless journey. It is almost a mix of a “man goes on a journey” & a “stranger comes to town.” The 52 short stories are structured like a shuffled deck of cards, with four distinct suits. Each suit has a minor story arc for Thom. In Hearts, he’s on a search for love. In Diamonds, he’s on a search for treasure. In Spades, he’s on a search for enlightenment. In Clubs, …

Weixi Du Jan 2025

Weixi Du

Dissertations from all years

Hanyu Wen Jan 2025

Hanyu Wen

Dissertations from all years

Bingxin Xie Jan 2025

Bingxin Xie

Dissertations from all years

Yat Daisy Mak Jan 2025

Yat Daisy Mak

Dissertations from all years

Yuk Lun Chan Jan 2025

Yuk Lun Chan

Dissertations from all years

Simei Zeng Jan 2025

Simei Zeng

Dissertations from all years

Hoi Ka Kelly Tam Jan 2025

Hoi Ka Kelly Tam

Dissertations from all years

Yan Tung Yip Jan 2025

Yan Tung Yip

Dissertations from all years

Siqi Wang Jan 2025

Siqi Wang

Dissertations from all years
