In April–May 2025, a trial excavation was conducted northwest of Elat, in the Shehoret Industrial Zone (Permit No. A-10054/2025; map ref. 196507/390351; Fig. 1), in advance of the construction of Reservoir 2. The excavation was carried out on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority and funded by Mekorot – Israel’s National Water Company. The excavation was directed by T. Sapir (field photography), with the assistance of Y. Alamor (administration), A. Montague (surveying and aerial photography), A. Azoulay (plans), D. Degen-Eisenberg (scientific guidance), Y. Radashkovsky (aerial photography) and G. Seriy of the Southern Negev District.

The Genome Defense, which offers a book-length narrative nonfiction account of the civil litigation that led to the elimination of patents on human genes in the United States, is a member of a distinct literary subgenre that I term True Law. Like the older and better-known True Crime genre, True Law narratives blend the conventions of journalism and novelistic writing to describe complex legal disputes in a manner that is engaging and accessible to the general public. Economic Miracles And Their Hypes: An Africanist Disputation, Abou B. Bamba

This essay argues that economic miracles are the result of particular processes and procedures to establish a regime of truth. Taking the example of Ivory Coast from the 1950s through the early 1980s as core evidence, the author shows the role of public relations in creating a particular perception of economic achievements. Using the emergence of both West Germany and Japan as early examples in the wake of postwar reconstruction, it is further underlined that the larger context of the Cold War facilitated the construction of economic miracles.

De Arte Rhetorica Libri Tres (1562) written by Cyprian Soarez (1524-1593), priest and teacher of the Society of Jesus, was the standard rhetorical manual in the Ratio Studiorum and thus was used for over two centuries in Jesuit colleges throughout the world. Concerned that young students of Latin were not yet ready for the major rhetorical texts of antiquity, such as Cicero’s and Quintilian’s, Soarez wrote this manual as a digest of ancient rhetoric to the beginner. In the past few decades, the prevalence of trafficking has increased, not only around the world, but also within the United States. In 2023, there was an estimated 1,091,000 people in America living in modern-day slavery conditions, which falls under the umbrella of human trafficking. In 2022, the Department of Justice only prosecuted a total of 310 individuals, 155 predominantly involved in sex trafficking. Compared to the estimated number of victims, 310 convicted traffickers is a strikingly low number. This is due to the extremely challenging investigation process related to human and sex trafficking. Crime television shows portray a certain image of police officers that can either hurt or improve their public image. This study explored the evolution of the portrayal of law enforcement in fictional television shows compared to real world work. The investigator’s primary research was to watch two episodes from six different crime series and analyze how each show portrayed homicide and kidnapping cases. Secondary research was to interview police officers on how cases, like those depicted in the shows, are truly investigated and solved. The findings suggest that crime shows often mislead audiences and skew the public’s opinion of police …

From Language ‘Standards’ To Speaker Agency: Exploring Spanish Heritage Language Instructors’ Ideologies, Gabrielle Yocupicio

International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest

This study explores the language ideologies of six university-level Spanish Heritage Language (SHL) instructors in Arizona, focusing on how they reproduce or challenge standard language ideologies (SLIs) in their teaching. SLIs often devalue the language varieties spoken by SHL learners, portraying them as informal or deficient compared to a perceived “standard” Spanish. Such views can undermine learners’ confidence and linguistic agency. Using qualitative methods, including interviews and observations, the study examines how instructors’ beliefs and practices align with or diverge from critical language awareness (CLA) frameworks that promote the legitimacy of all language varieties.

The complex forces of national identity, economic ambition, and ideological justification created a dynamic and contested landscape that shaped America’s Cold War policies. A carefully curated useful past, bolstered by religious convictions, fostered a belief in American exceptionalism and moral leadership that provided both the impetus and justification for 11 America’s actions abroad. Yet, America’s stated ideals—freedom and democracy—existed in stark tension with the pursuit of its national interests, often clashing with its self-perceived moral superiority.
