Appropriation And The Art Of The Copy, Elizabeth K. Mix May 2015

Appropriation And The Art Of The Copy, Elizabeth K. Mix

Scholarship and Professional Work – Arts

This essay focuses on why and how copying occurs within the field of visual art and identifies shifts in the perception of the role of copying over time as indicated by changing terminology. Copies are ubiquitous in our culture today. They are especially prevalent on the Internet in the form of mash-ups and memes. While appropriation (the quoting or borrowing of an earlier artist's work or style) is generally considered a postmodern strategy, the practice has, in fact, a long and complicated history that includes the tradition of academic copying (a method of artistic training whereby students copy the works …

Changing Relationship With The Land And One Another In Pindoyú, Paraguay, Kathryn E. Peters May 2015

Changing Relationship With The Land And One Another In Pindoyú, Paraguay, Kathryn E. Peters

Latin American Studies ETDs

This thesis is about agricultural transition in the face of globalization in the community of Pindoyú, Paraguay. Utilizing the extended case study method, the experiences of people of Pindoyú are documented through partcipant observation, individual and household interviews, and auto-ethnographies in order to illuminate theory on the articulation of modes of production, moral economy, and Marxist ecology. Rooted in Meillassouxs understanding of the domestic mode of production and Wolpe's extended view of the articulated modes of production, it argues that people in Pindoyú are participating in the capitalist mode of production while also practicing values incongruent with capitalist production. Findings …

A Way Forward: An Alternative Way For Understanding What The Bible Is And How It Is Understood, Joshua Scott May 2015

A Way Forward: An Alternative Way For Understanding What The Bible Is And How It Is Understood, Joshua Scott

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Christianity in America is in decline. Millennials are leaving the evangelical churches of their youth in droves, but they aren’t leaving the idea of God or spirituality. Statistics show that the theology of the fundamentalist/conservative evangelical church is contributing to this exodus of Millennials, particularly when it comes to issues of environment, sexuality, and violence. This thesis explores the roots of fundamentalist theology—particularly their understanding of what the Bible is, and how it is to be understood—and how this theology is practically worked out in their approach to the three issues mentioned above. Finally, I offer an alternative framework for …

Babel, Anais Dorian Norman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

babel is a collection of nonfiction essays in which I explore a female twenty-something’s crossdimensional dilemma of spirituality, racism, art, and love in the wake of Bible-belt hipsterdom. I board the train that is human pride, that great metal snake by which we essayists craft our lives, and measure out my stories by cities and coffeespoons—dotted with dark roast, preferably. The train of my collection glides through the first ‘burg and its Godlike aspirations, Babel; travels a ways to Virginia, specifically Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University and Prince Edward County, which was the hotbed of the Civil Rights in Education Movement; …

The Performance Of Leadership: All The School’S A Stage And The Teachers And Students Are Merely Players, Christi Anne Fenton

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to identify and better understand the performance qualities that are prevalent in successful principals. Specifically, acting and leadership tools previously identified and compared by Dunklee (2000) were used to gain a better understanding of the interview process utilized to hire K-12 principals in school districts with more than 10,000 students in the state of Indiana. Arguably, the roles of the principal are much like those of an actor who must think on his or her feet in multiple situations. It is hoped that this study contributes new knowledge to assist in the …

College Basketball In Kentucky, Religion, And Distinguishing Between The Two: Concerns And Cautions For The Conversation On The Religiosity Of Sports, Matthew A. Sheffield

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Academic analysis of sport and religion is still in an early and formative phase. Only in the past fifty years has the conversation of sport and religion substantially been revealed as subject matter for serious academic work. This thesis includes literature from various scholars interested in religion and sport, contemplation on the religious nature of college basketball in the state of Kentucky, and challenges for leading scholars arguing over the notion of sport as a form of religion. The first half of the thesis presents the narrative of the increasingly growing academic debate over considering sport a religious phenomenon. The …

Between Two Worlds, Stephanie Tillman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

“Original Sin”—evocative and powerful words, but what if they were applied to one of the world’s most popular fairy tales? This thesis explores Snow White in the context of the Seven Deadly Sins and the grand fall of Adam and Eve. The forbidden fruit manifests itself in different ways, pulling the prim and proper princess into places she never could have imagined. But what of the Wicked Queen, here known as Lilith? She too feels the bite of the world’s sick sense of humor, exacting revenge on those who have wronged her. Are these poems about them? Or are they …

Young Adults Leaving The Church: The Tie To Intentional Spiritual Mentoring Among Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Teens Through Youth And Confirmation Ministry, Serena Alexandria Pace May 2015

Young Adults Leaving The Church: The Tie To Intentional Spiritual Mentoring Among Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Teens Through Youth And Confirmation Ministry, Serena Alexandria Pace

Doctor of Ministry

Previously churched Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS)1 young adults are leaving the worship community post confirmation and post high school. Is this truly what is taking place? If so, what structures within churches and youth ministries might contribute to this problem? In order to address this problem, it is proposed that the lack of youth mentorship ministry, especially of teen-agers in the church, contributes to the problem. Worship communities can help ensure that young adults stay connected by establishing mentor relationships during the confirmation and teen years.

Metaphors, Dean Mobley May 2015

Metaphors, Dean Mobley

Graduate Theses

This statement analyzes and reflects upon my Master of Fine Arts thesis exploration of material collision as a metaphor of my life experiences. The thesis exhibition, entitled “Equilibrium”, consists of six sculptural works constructed in glass, wood, metal, and repurposed heavy industrial objects. Within each individual piece I selected materials that would, when forced together under pressure and intense heat, bring attention to the utilization and exploitation of their inherent qualities. The manipulation of these material qualities has enabled me to express the complexity of human emotion. I am confident that all materials can convey certain emotional properties. During the …

Shakespeare And Boyhood: Early Modern Representations And Contemporary Appropriations, Marvin Tyler Sasser May 2015

Shakespeare And Boyhood: Early Modern Representations And Contemporary Appropriations, Marvin Tyler Sasser

Dissertations

This dissertation demonstrates that Shakespearean boyhood, both in early modern plays and contemporary reimaginings for young readers, critiques patriarchal and hegemonic ideals through the rhetoric and behavior of boy characters. Although critics have called Shakespeare’s boy characters indistinguishable, I find that they provide Shakespeare a unique resource to offer persuasive skepticism about heroic conventions, education, and political instability. This project begins by examining the lexical network of boy in order to chart its uses in early modern England. The subsequent three chapters establish how Shakespeare uses boys to comment on a range of ideal manhoods, such as the chivalrous …

Searching For Modeling Of Stravinsky's Petroushka In Poulenc's Rapsodie Nègre: Poulenc's Use Of Popular Forms And Techniques In His Earliest Work, Jeremy Rover May 2015

Searching For Modeling Of Stravinsky's Petroushka In Poulenc's Rapsodie Nègre: Poulenc's Use Of Popular Forms And Techniques In His Earliest Work, Jeremy Rover

Senior Theses

Why does the view that French composer Francis Poulenc was a musical hack and a fraud continue to be discussed today? To get to the bottom of this, we need to look at the evidence available and find proof to back up these claims. In the predominant research on Poulenc, many scholars mention musical themes and quotations linked to other composers, but most of these claims aren’t backed up with specific examples or score studies. Therefore, in this paper I attempt to trace the “crime” to its source by showing Poulenc’s possible borrowing of harmonies, thematic material, styles, and rhythms …

“Somos Mujeres Y Seres Humanos:" Historias De Vida Y Sanación Con Inmigrantes Latinas Sobrevientes De Violencia Domestica, Sofia Halperin-Goldstein

Hispanic Studies Honors Projects

While storytelling has been a source of resistance and survival within communities of color for centuries, the therapeutic potential of the personal narrative has only recently been recognized and adopted by health-related fields. Based on a year-long oral project history project with eight immigrant Latina mothers and survivors of domestic violence, this thesis examines the connection between healing and storytelling in the specific context of trauma and societal oppression. The value of this project extends beyond the act of recording an oral history, given the intersectional discrimination experienced by the participants as women of color, immigrants, and members of the …

Blood Diamonds: The Recovery Of Black Unification Amidst White Hegemony, Christine E. Ohenewah May 2015

Blood Diamonds: The Recovery Of Black Unification Amidst White Hegemony, Christine E. Ohenewah

American Studies Honors Projects

In applying an integrative framework of race, Pan-Africanism, and International Security Studies, this thesis links present and historical tensions between Africans and African Americans in the United States to the larger-scale phenomenon of global White hegemony. I argue that liberalism and notions of White citizenry ignite Black interethnic stratification, which thereby impedes possibilities for Black Diasporic unification and uplift. The revival of revolutionary Pan-Africanism thus remains an urgent necessity in the struggle to resist forces of colonial subjugation. As Blood Diamonds who have been displaced across the contours of history, space, and lineage, Africans of the Diaspora must once more …

Who Pays For Music?, Meg Aman May 2015

Who Pays For Music?, Meg Aman

Honors Projects in Management

The purpose of this capstone project was to determine the attributes of consumers that pay for music, specifically music streaming services. The recent decline in current individual track sales and the increase in the number of streamed songs, highlights the relevance of this topic. The increasing popularity in music streaming has caused much contreversy in the music industry. Many artists are unhappy with the low revenue they receive from songwriting royalties from these streaming services that offer a free platform. Artists are not the only ones who need consumers to pay for music, the music streaming sites that provide free …

A total of 30 court interpreters throughout the country participated in the survey, and 11 volunteered to be interviewed. Survey respondents were asked about challenges encountered at work, including legal terminology, terminology in other domains, tag questions, and …
