Michelangelo's Last Judgement: A Crisis Of Conscience, Ana Schnellmann May 2015

Michelangelo's Last Judgement: A Crisis Of Conscience, Ana Schnellmann

Student Scholarship

Michelangelo, that fascinating Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, and architect has been a source of wonder and intrigue since his own times. Vasari refers to Michelangelo’s birth as a gift from the gods, and Athos writes “In his own time, it was said that Michelangelo’s work rivaled God’s, and his force and authority are still overwhelming.” Indeed, the power of Michelangelo is still great. People flock from around the globe to marvel at his marbles. The David, the Pieta, the Bacchus, and many others are sculptures so beautiful that the marble seems to breathe, to break out of their …

'Mater Ecclesiae': History, Theology, And Consequences, Johann G. Roten

Marian Studies

Ecclesiology involves an ongoing study of the Church that will be fruitful for understanding its present only if one explores the Church’s past in search of the future. The ecclesiology of the mid-twentieth century rediscovered the close relationship between Mary and the Church, culminating in the title and the reality of Mater Ecclesiae (Mary, Mother of the Church).

Measuring School Accountability: Perceptions From Teachers, Principals, And Superintendents, Keith Thomas Bush May 2015

Measuring School Accountability: Perceptions From Teachers, Principals, And Superintendents, Keith Thomas Bush

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify the multiple factors that are utilized by accountability models and to identify the perceptions of Indiana educators in regard to what these professional educators believe should be utilized to assess school accountability. No Child Left Behind and the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) accountability model frameworks have had an impact on all public schools in the United States. Under AYP, high stakes testing results are utilized to provide acknowledgement to schools that meet pre-established thresholds, as well as to provide consequences for schools that fail to meet these requirements. This study is significant …

Assessment Of Basic Concept Knowledge Of Children From Differing Socio-Economic Status Homes, Kirbee E. Lester May 2015

Assessment Of Basic Concept Knowledge Of Children From Differing Socio-Economic Status Homes, Kirbee E. Lester

Rehabilitation, Human Resources and Communication Disorders Undergraduate Honors Theses

In the field of education, research suggests that socioeconomic status (SES) influences vocabulary development and academic achievement. Children from high SES backgrounds tend to score better on standardized vocabulary tests than children from low SES backgrounds; however, to date only general vocabulary measures have been utilized. Basic concepts, a specific subset of vocabulary, serve as the foundation upon which children build their conceptual knowledge. For this study, two groups of preschool children (one from high SES homes and one from low SES homes) were administered the Bracken Basic Concept Scale - Third Edition (BBCS:3). The purpose of this study was …

Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Return To Political Theology, Joshua D. Hawley May 2015

Return To Political Theology, Joshua D. Hawley

Notre Dame Law Review

My aim in what follows is to employ N.T. Wright’s powerful and provocative analysis of Paul’s political gospel as a critical perspective on the foundational claims of the Great Separation. Because the very possibility of political theology is disputed in many quarters, I begin in Part I with a defense of political theology as critical theory. In Part II, I turn to Paul’s political gospel, tracing Wright’s reconstruction of its central terms, including the Pauline critique of empire. In Part III, I explore—briefly—the affirmative political vision Pauline theology makes possible, with particular focus on that theology’s unique form of political …

The Soldier And The Cigarette: 1918-1986, Joel Richard Bius May 2015

The Soldier And The Cigarette: 1918-1986, Joel Richard Bius

Dissertations

The military-industrial complex has been the topic of intense conversation among historians since President Dwight Eisenhower first gave the phrase life in January 1961. The term typically conjures up images of massive weapons procurement programs, but it also ironically involved one of the world’s most highly-engineered consumer products, the manufactured cigarette. “The Soldier and the Cigarette: 1918–1986” describes the unique, often comfortable, yet sometimes controversial relationships among the military, the cigarette industry, and tobaccoland politicians. The dissertation argues that the federal government’s first cigarette warning in 1964 changed a relationship between soldiers and cigarettes that the Army had fostered for …

Trading Identities: National Identity, Loyalty, And Backcountry Merchants In Revolutionary America, 1740-1816, Timothy Charles Hemmis May 2015

Trading Identities: National Identity, Loyalty, And Backcountry Merchants In Revolutionary America, 1740-1816, Timothy Charles Hemmis

Dissertations

This project tracks the lives a select group of Philadelphia frontier merchants such as George Morgan, David Franks, and others from 1754-1811. “Trading Identities” traces the trajectory of each man’s economic and political loyalties during the Revolutionary period. By focusing on the men of trading firms operating in Philadelphia, the borderlands and the wider world, it becomes abundantly clear that their identities were shaped and sustained by their commercial concerns—not by any new political ideology at work in this period. They were members not of a British (or even American) Atlantic World, but a profit-driven Atlantic World. The Seven Years’ …

Book Review: How To Bake Pi: An Edible Exploration Of The Mathematics Of Mathematics, Darren B. Glass May 2015

Book Review: How To Bake Pi: An Edible Exploration Of The Mathematics Of Mathematics, Darren B. Glass

Math Faculty Publications

If you think about it, mathematics is really just one big analogy. For one example, the very concept of the number three is an drawing an analogy between a pile with three rocks, a collection of three books, and a plate with three carrots on it. For another, the idea of a group is drawing an analogy between adding real numbers, multiplying matrices, and many other mathematical structures. So much of what we do as mathematicians involves abstracting concrete things, and what is abstraction other than a big analogy? [excerpt]

The Influence Of Peer Educators In A First-Year Seminar On Freshman Preparation For Collegiate Challenges: A Qualitative Investigation Of Observational Learning, Sarah A. Forbes May 2015

The Influence Of Peer Educators In A First-Year Seminar On Freshman Preparation For Collegiate Challenges: A Qualitative Investigation Of Observational Learning, Sarah A. Forbes

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Most high school students have not spent deliberate time preparing for their transition to college. Knowing this, institutions have developed a first-year seminar geared toward transitional issues inherent to a specific institution. While the research on these programs illustrates their utility, there appears to be an opportunity to further their success by incorporating peers as educators in the classroom. Bandura (1986) saw the potential of observational learning through peer modeling, though few researchers have studied first-year seminars from this theoretical perspective. Through a postpositivistic philosophical paradigm, this exploratory qualitative study utilized a phenomenological design to investigate two research questions: what …

Scarred: A Collection Of Creative Nonfiction Essays, Jason A. Ruiz May 2015

Scarred: A Collection Of Creative Nonfiction Essays, Jason A. Ruiz

Theses & Honors Papers

This collection of essays seeks to explore the need for redemption as a necessary element of the Human Condition, by exploring my experiences as a child, adolescent, teen, and adult. Throughout the collection of essays, I, as the central character of the work, am conditioned by my physical deformity (a massive scar on my stomach) to question my life, values, and relationships. I establish for myself a destructive pattern that nearly ends my marriage. These destructive patterns eventually become touchstones through which I finally come to terms with who I am, what I am, and the truth that my existence …
