Tinkers: Robots, Makers, And The Changing Face Of 21st Century Diy, Linda Gorman May 2015

Tinkers: Robots, Makers, And The Changing Face Of 21st Century Diy, Linda Gorman

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Project URL: www.tinkers.lindaggorman.com

My capstone project takes the form of a website, accessible at the URL above. The site features nine different journalistic pieces reported and produced over the course of the past year, all centered on the themes of robotics and cutting-edge DIY communities. I worked in several different media, from traditional print to audio to infographics. Though this project officially falls under the category of magazine journalism, my capstone also had a heavy technical component associated with creating the website and writing scripts to collect and visualize data.

In terms of the content, I reported and wrote about …

Strada: A City-Centric Digital Magazine On Florence, Italy, Gabriela Riccardi May 2015

Strada: A City-Centric Digital Magazine On Florence, Italy, Gabriela Riccardi

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

More than 45 American university and colleges run programs in Florence, Italy, translating to more than one student center per square mile of the city. And the young American presence is apparent in Firenze. Students fill the city center, flock together in coffee shops, flow in and out of markets and museums and discoteques. But from this stronghold springs an Florentine catering to Americanism: there are restaurants that will speak English rather than Italian, shops that will sell American labels from home, and piazzas that are bustling not with young Italians, but students from the States. It can be remarkably …

"Have you ever gone on a vacation to relax and sight see, only to return and find that you are more exhausted when you return from the vacation? You simply did too much on the vacation. Sure, you made memories and have plenty of photos to show for your experiences, but the overall feeling is one of exhaustion instead of renewed vigor for the routines of your normal life."

Ruth's First, Richard C. Crepeau May 2015

Ruth's First, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

A hundred years ago, Babe Ruth strode to the plate and cracked his first major league home run on May 5, 1915. Twenty years later he would hit No. 714, a milestone that would stand for generations. 712, 713, and 714 came in Pittsburgh a few weeks before his retirement, and 714 was the first ball ever hit over the roof of Forbes Field in right, and it came to rest in a small park across the street. It was the longest home run, some would say, of his career.

The Vehiculatio In Roman Imperial Regulation: Particular Solutions To A Systematic Problem, Russell S. Gentry May 2015

The Vehiculatio In Roman Imperial Regulation: Particular Solutions To A Systematic Problem, Russell S. Gentry

Madison Historical Review

Category: World History

As the Roman Empire pushed its frontiers beyond the Mediterranean world, imperial authorities from Augustus onward faced a serious challenge: information transfer. The government of the early Roman Empire was famously lean in its bureaucracy and relied on small teams of imperial specialists (hated as spies) and military officers selected by governors to carry official documents great distances. These individuals traveled using an ad hoc system designed to take advantage of whatever hospitality existed along the Roman roadways. Messengers commandeered food, buildings, animals, and even guides for most legs of their journey. Official travel passes issued with …

The Medieval Canon And The Renaissance Image Of The Turk: A Brief Historiography Of Pre-Modern European Conceptions Of The Muslim World, A. Blake Denton May 2015

The Medieval Canon And The Renaissance Image Of The Turk: A Brief Historiography Of Pre-Modern European Conceptions Of The Muslim World, A. Blake Denton

Madison Historical Review

This historiographic essay examines the scholarly debate over pre-modern European “images,” or conceptions, of the Muslim World during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Adopting a thematic approach, this study is guided by four themes shared by two or more works. While this essay largely revolves around the image studies of Nancy Bisaha, Norman Daniel, and Robert Schwoebel, the interpretations of additional scholars are presented as well. Though points of convergence exists between the works presented here, far more telling is the fact that the sharp contrasts between these historians aptly illustrates the challenge of determining the precise nature of …

Fort Lipstick And The Making Of June Cleaver: Gender Roles In American Propaganda And Advertising, 1941-1961, Samantha L. Vandermeade

Madison Historical Review

This article discusses the ways in which government propaganda and corporate advertising during the 1940s and 1950s made a concerted effort to mitigate the increased sexual, economic, and social freedoms of women engendered by the circumstances of the war years. While Rosie the Riveter and others like her became the picture Americans often associate with women in World War II, advertising firms and the government deliberately created Rosie and her fellows to reinforce female participation in the war effort only through their pre-ascribed dichotomous roles as either socially tamed sexual objects or mothers. Then, as the war drew to a …

Striking The Balance: Bringing Peace To The Battlefield Of Preservation, Matthew D. Laroche May 2015

Striking The Balance: Bringing Peace To The Battlefield Of Preservation, Matthew D. Laroche

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Most Gettysburg residents took note this past winter when the Appalachian Brewing Company’s branch restaurant near the Lutheran Seminary closed. The Civil War Trust bought the land for its historical value; the structure and an adjacent hotel surround the Mary Thompson House, General Lee’s Headquarters during the battle. From the moment of purchase, the plan had been to demolish the buildings, sow grass, and transfer the four-acre lot to the National Park Service as a prized addition to the park. Most onlookers probably think that the tale is told as soon as the land is bought, cleared, and promised to …
