Learning To Flip The Framework: A Multigenre, Autoethnographic Account Of One Student's Experience With Gradual Release Of Responsibility, Julie Theresa Saltisiak
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
For this Capstone project, the success of using gradual release of responsibility as an everyday instructional framework is examined, using one Syracuse University English Education major’s experience as evidence. This project acts as an explanation for the learning that has occurred surrounding gradual release of responsibility in this student’s college experience. Using an autoethnographic approach allows for this student’s personal experiences to be regarded as strong data in order to better understand the larger experience of all Education majors working with the gradual release of responsibility framework in the School of Education at Syracuse University. This project also uses multiple …

Women Breaking Ground: A Website Profiling Women Entrepreneurs In Syracuse, Jill Comoletti
Women Breaking Ground: A Website Profiling Women Entrepreneurs In Syracuse, Jill Comoletti
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
My Honors Capstone project is a website titled Women Breaking Ground (www.womenbreakingground.com). On my website, I published 10 feature-length profiles on women entrepreneurs in Syracuse. Each profile features photographs and an interactive map to show readers the location of the woman-owned business. This project is relevant because the number of women business owners in the United States is increasing; in fact, women are opening 1,200 new businesses every day. I hope that my project inspires even more women to pursue their passion and become entrepreneurs.

Macaronic, A Digital Travel Magazine About Chile, Leanna Garfield
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Macaronic, a digital travel and culture magazine, features stories about people and destinations across the world, with each issue spotlighting a new country. The first issue chronicles stories across Chile. As a digital native magazine, Macaronic encourages its users to connect with stories across borders. It appeals to curious millennials who strive for an authentic experience when they travel.
For this project, I traveled to ten different locations outside of Santiago to report stories from across the country, including Valparaíso, Concepción, Chiloé, and Patagonia. Macaronic includes four main “categories,” or sections: “Guides,” “People,” “Travels,” and “Culture.” It features a …

The context of this project is a digital magazine format featuring lifestyle photography for local restaurants in northern New Jersey. Conceptually, the intent of the magazine is to provide the reader a glimpse of restaurants in their entirety, from food to environment. I produced all content, except for the real user reviews, and created the design and interactive elements to accompany the content. The reviews are from actual customers who I talked to at each restaurant location. After multiple trips to each restaurant to photograph the food and atmosphere and talk to staff and customers, I edited the content in …

Diaspora Times Two is a photographic journalistic study of Africans living in Guangzhou, China and Chinese in Accra, Ghana. The study focuses on two young men from the Gambia who are looking for low-wage work in Guangzhou and a house of five Chinese telecommunications workers employing Ghanaians in Accra. A micro approach was taken, seeking similarities and differences between the immigrants, making images that record details not found in a general photographic survey of the areas. The project brings together stories collected from both Africans and Asians, providing insights into the process of international relocation driven by economic challenges and …

The Capstone project that I completed for the Renee Crown Honors Program was a short film documentary about the local music venue called the Lost Horizon. The work was to bring light to the local music scene and the dedication that the rising musicians had to go through while working in a venue like the Lost Horizon. The project was shot on a variety of cameras, including the Sony NX5 and various DSLRs. A green screen studio space was used for the interviews. Three different concerts were filmed, which were used as the B-roll in the film. Archival photos from …

The thesis project was presented in a public fashion show at Syracuse University at the end of April 2015.
In this creative reflective essay, a brief history of technology in fashion design will be explored. In chapter two, my inspirations and research in fashion design, art, and photography all support my decisions …
A Comparison Of Communication Practices In Hazing And Domestic Violence Situations, Page Garbee
A Comparison Of Communication Practices In Hazing And Domestic Violence Situations, Page Garbee
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Hazing is an extremely dangerous practice that has plagued society for thousands of years. Despite its extensive history, meaningful solutions are seriously lacking and instead the problem appears to be escalating in frequency and severity. By comparing hazing to domestic violence and using a social constructionist lens to examine the issue, this paper aims to propose solutions. Ultimately, the solution lies in a breaking of the cycle or disruption of the negative patterns in place. However, in order to accomplish this, changes are necessary both within the organizations that generally practice hazing and society.

Telling The Story Of A Fallen Queen Dante's Artistic License In Canto 5 Of The Inferno With Dido's Fate In Book 6 Of Vergil's Aeneid, Kara E. Anthony-Price
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This paper seeks to answer the question of why Dante treats Dido so harshly for her "fault" (culpa, 4. 172), when Vergil treats her so leniently for the same culpae. To answer this question, the paper discusses the nature of Dido's roles in the Aeneid and in the Inferno, respectively, as well as the role of the gods in the Aeneid in her culpa, the role of Dido's furor, and the implications behind Dante's change in Dido's fate. One opinion among scholars is that Dante's Inferno was a "Christianized" redaction of the Aeneid, so that Dido's punishment would fit her …

“The I-81 Project: Then and Now” is a documentary regarding the history of Interstate 81 in Syracuse and the ongoing debate regarding the highway’s future in the city. Interstate 81 was built on top of the 15th ward, a neighborhood that was mostly demolished around the time the highway’s bridges were first built in the 1960s. Today, as these bridges reach the age of 50, the New York State Department of Transportation has decided that it is time to replace them. However, several different options are on the table for the new I-81 in Syracuse, including a boulevard replacing …

More than 45 American university and colleges run programs in Florence, Italy, translating to more than one student center per square mile of the city. And the young American presence is apparent in Firenze. Students fill the city center, flock together in coffee shops, flow in and out of markets and museums and discoteques. But from this stronghold springs an Florentine catering to Americanism: there are restaurants that will speak English rather than Italian, shops that will sell American labels from home, and piazzas that are bustling not with young Italians, but students from the States. It can be remarkably …

Ruth's First, Richard C. Crepeau
Ruth's First, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
A hundred years ago, Babe Ruth strode to the plate and cracked his first major league home run on May 5, 1915. Twenty years later he would hit No. 714, a milestone that would stand for generations. 712, 713, and 714 came in Pittsburgh a few weeks before his retirement, and 714 was the first ball ever hit over the roof of Forbes Field in right, and it came to rest in a small park across the street. It was the longest home run, some would say, of his career.

The Vehiculatio In Roman Imperial Regulation: Particular Solutions To A Systematic Problem, Russell S. Gentry
Madison Historical Review
Category: World History
As the Roman Empire pushed its frontiers beyond the Mediterranean world, imperial authorities from Augustus onward faced a serious challenge: information transfer. The government of the early Roman Empire was famously lean in its bureaucracy and relied on small teams of imperial specialists (hated as spies) and military officers selected by governors to carry official documents great distances. These individuals traveled using an ad hoc system designed to take advantage of whatever hospitality existed along the Roman roadways. Messengers commandeered food, buildings, animals, and even guides for most legs of their journey. Official travel passes issued with …

The Medieval Canon And The Renaissance Image Of The Turk: A Brief Historiography Of Pre-Modern European Conceptions Of The Muslim World, A. Blake Denton
Madison Historical Review
This historiographic essay examines the scholarly debate over pre-modern European “images,” or conceptions, of the Muslim World during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Adopting a thematic approach, this study is guided by four themes shared by two or more works. While this essay largely revolves around the image studies of Nancy Bisaha, Norman Daniel, and Robert Schwoebel, the interpretations of additional scholars are presented as well. Though points of convergence exists between the works presented here, far more telling is the fact that the sharp contrasts between these historians aptly illustrates the challenge of determining the precise nature of …

Fort Lipstick And The Making Of June Cleaver: Gender Roles In American Propaganda And Advertising, 1941-1961, Samantha L. Vandermeade
Madison Historical Review
This article discusses the ways in which government propaganda and corporate advertising during the 1940s and 1950s made a concerted effort to mitigate the increased sexual, economic, and social freedoms of women engendered by the circumstances of the war years. While Rosie the Riveter and others like her became the picture Americans often associate with women in World War II, advertising firms and the government deliberately created Rosie and her fellows to reinforce female participation in the war effort only through their pre-ascribed dichotomous roles as either socially tamed sexual objects or mothers. Then, as the war drew to a …
