One Earth, Mary De La Valette Jul 2015

One Earth, Mary De La Valette

Between the Species

ONE EARTH

When the birds are gone

Will we care ?

Will we sit outside

And mourn the quiet ?

Will there be

A sense of loss ?

Of missing beauty ?

Of Nature diminished ?

Or will we merely

Go inside

And turn on the TV ?

When there are

No more animals

And we own the earth

What will we do ?

When the wind

Is no longer

Soft and warm

But a raging monster

Tearing off roofs

And whipping fire,

Will we curse Nature

Or ourselves ?

And, when the oceans die

And we own

The stinking …

The Secret Doctrine And The Gigantomachia: Interpreting Plato’S Theaetetus-Sophist, Brad Berman Jul 2015

The Secret Doctrine And The Gigantomachia: Interpreting Plato’S Theaetetus-Sophist, Brad Berman

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Theaetetus’ ‘secret doctrine’ and the Sophist’s ‘battle between gods and giants’ have long fascinated Plato scholars. I show that the passages systematically parallel one another. Each presents two substantive positions that are advanced on behalf of two separate parties, related to one another by their comparative sophistication or refinement. Further, those parties and their respective positions are characterized in substantially similar terms. On the basis of these sustained parallels, I argue that the two passages should be read together, with each informing and constraining an interpretation of the other.

Perceptions Of Child Wellbeing And Attitudes Towards Polygamy Between Members And Non-Members Of The Lds Church, Mccall Bowcut Lyon Jul 2015

Perceptions Of Child Wellbeing And Attitudes Towards Polygamy Between Members And Non-Members Of The Lds Church, Mccall Bowcut Lyon

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Perceptions of the wellbeing of children in polygamous families and attitudes toward polygamy in general were examined in this study, with comparisons between individuals who have a history of membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) and individuals who have never been members of the LDS church. No significant differences were found between members and non-members. Comparisons were also made between current and past members of the LDS church, resulting in only one significant difference: support/opposition for the legalization of polygamy. These results suggest that having a recent religious history of practicing polygamy does not necessarily …

Religious Tourism Versus Secular Pilgrimage: The Basilica Of La Sagrada Família, Estela Marine-Roig Jul 2015

Religious Tourism Versus Secular Pilgrimage: The Basilica Of La Sagrada Família, Estela Marine-Roig

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

In recent decades, the number of tourists visiting religious buildings of special cultural attraction, mainly due to their exceptional architecture, has significantly increased. In such cases, it is hard to discern whether it is a question of religious tourism or of so-called secular pilgrimage. This paper analyses this issue by means of a paradigmatic case study: The Basilica of La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Catalonia, a Roman Catholic church that receives over 3 million visitors a year; the part of the “unfinished cathedral”, built under the direction of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi, was registered in 2005 as a cultural site …

Review Of M. Lee, Body, Dress, And Identity In Ancient Greece, Laura Gawlinski Jul 2015

Review Of M. Lee, Body, Dress, And Identity In Ancient Greece, Laura Gawlinski

Classical Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The increased scholarly attention to clothing, textiles, and accessories is visible in a number of collected volumes, a research center in Copenhagen, and several dissertations in progress, but more than a century has passed since the publication of a monograph devoted specifically to Greek dress. Mireille Lee fills this lacuna with an inclusive study that explores Greek garments by contextualizing them in relationship to the bodies that wore them and the situations when they were worn. This approach places Greek dress into a contemporary theoretical framework, in dialogue with the wider field of dress scholarship across disciplines.

Revisiting The Afterlife: The Inadequacies Of "Heaven" And "Hell", Christopher P. Davis

Fidei et Veritatis: The Liberty University Journal of Graduate Research

This paper deals with some of the ambiguities that are associated with the intermediate and final states after death. Whereas many in the church have dismissed these concepts as myths of the ancients, this discussion shows how the grounding of such beliefs in the Hebrew mindset was the key to Jesus’ own teachings about the afterlife. The argument begins by developing a biblical anthropology over against the modern naturalistic anthropologies that have largely dominated the philosophical and theological scenes. From here we look at the Old Testament concept of the afterlife, and how the modern view that the Hebrews were …

The inspiration for this collection comes from my mother's family. My mother grew up with three siblings - two sisters and a brother - in urban Chicago after her parents migrated from Mexico in the 1960s. The interrelated stories here are loosely based on real-life events that occurred to this family as my mother and her siblings grew up.

The Properties Of Quantifiers And Numerals: A Case Of Shinyiha, Devet Goodness Jul 2015

The Properties Of Quantifiers And Numerals: A Case Of Shinyiha, Devet Goodness

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Quantifiers and numerals have been a subject of controversy in linguistics. One issue of concern with regard to quantifiers and numerals is how to categorize them. The categorial status of quantifiers and numerals is not uniform across Bantu languages. This paper seeks to show that quantifiers and numerals are semi-lexical categories in the sense that they sit on the divide between lexical and functional categories. It posits that quantifiers and numerals cannot be regarded as adjectives per excellence. Although the two categories have some similarities with adjectives, they display differences morphologically, syntactically and semantically. In the end, It will be …
