Boys On Blue Benches: Disfigured Veterans Of The First World War, Brenna K. Pritchard
Boys On Blue Benches: Disfigured Veterans Of The First World War, Brenna K. Pritchard
LSU Master's Theses
The First World War saw a multitude of facial wounds, with veterans coming home with severe facial mutilation numbering in the thousands. These veterans have been somewhat overlooked in the historiography of medicine in World War I, and this work seeks to remedy that by examining every aspect of their lives, from the moment of the wound, to the aftermath of their return home. The medical professionals who treated these men gave a great deal of thought to the philosophy behind their work, and frequently voiced the opinion that their work was essential for the wellness of these men’s psyches. …
Nightmares Are Dreams, Too, Camilla Meg Morrison
Nightmares Are Dreams, Too, Camilla Meg Morrison
LSU Master's Theses
This work explores themes of womanhood through the creation of an installation that is a blend of visual art and costume design. Often the initial creative impulse of a costume design can be compromised by the needs or necessity of a production. Using this instinct as a guide to the exploration of themes of womanhood, this journey will yield the design and production of highly theatrical and emotional pieces of art. The purpose of this work is to tell stories and share experiences of being a woman. The pieces will be displayed as an environmental installation that will invite the …

The Merging Of Ornamentation, Artistic Competence, And Social Structure In The Portraiture Oi Jeremiah Theus In Charleston, South Carolina, Tania Inniss
LSU Master's Theses
Previous research into the art of Jeremiah Theus has often left much to be desired. A common choice of historians is to discuss how he differs from artists of his time, or discuss him solely in the context of other artists. However, it is important to study Theus within his own framework. A study of his particular location, time period, family history, the subjects he elected to portray and the way he chose to portray them all help in understanding and recognizing what makes Theus unique as an artist. This thesis aims not only to address the research undertaken by …

Human-Machine And Human-Human Authentication Through Active User Interaction, Manar Mohamed
Human-Machine And Human-Human Authentication Through Active User Interaction, Manar Mohamed
All ETDs from UAB
Authentication is a fundamental security component of various critical applications. It is essential to differentiate a human user from a bot (human-machine authentication) to prevent against automated mechanisms that attack and abuse the resources of an online entity. Authentication is also essential to differentiate one human user from another (human-human authentication) to securely control the access of online accounts and computer terminals. Unfortunately, the security and usability requirements of authentication have not been adequately addressed. The current and almost universally deployed techniques, CAPTCHAs for human-machine authentication, and passwords or biometrics for human-human authentication, all suffer from numerous well-documented usability and …

Latin American Immigration To The Deep South: Community Responses In Birmingham Metro Area, Al (1995-2010), Nadejda Bontcheva-Loyaga
All ETDs from UAB
Starting in the late 1990s, Latin American immigrants began settling in great numbers in non-traditional immigration states in the Deep South. Birmingham, Alabama, one of the large cities in the region, rapidly experienced a staggering growth in its Latin American immigrant population, which created numerous difficulties with access to services and intercommunity relations. The current study looks at these difficulties and the institutional framework that was established to address them and support the settlement process of incoming immigrants in the city. The study analyses the most pressing issues that needed to be addressed in five areas – healthcare, language and …
Emotion Socialization And Emotional Functioning In Late Adolescence And Emerging Adulthood, Jinhong Guo
Emotion Socialization And Emotional Functioning In Late Adolescence And Emerging Adulthood, Jinhong Guo
All ETDs from UAB
Parental emotion socialization has been associated with youth emotional development. However, less is known about the influences of emotion socialization on emotional functioning in late adolescence and emerging adulthood. The first manuscript examined the factor structure of The Emotions as a Child Scale (EAC) in late adolescence and emerging adulthood and evaluates its measurement invariance across gender and ethnicity. The results showed that parental responses to children’s negative emotions could be categorized into supportive and unsupportive responses and the EAC demonstrated stronger measurement invariance across gender than ethnic groups. The second manuscript examined coping strategies as mediators of the relationship …

Differential Effects Of Short-Term Morphine Treatment On Brain Volumes Of Men And Women With Low Back Pain, Kelsey Campbell
All ETDs from UAB
Objective: Long- and short-term opioid use is associated with morphological changes in the human brain. Opioids have analgesic and adverse effects, including addiction, that differently impact men and women. The current study aimed to investigate whether differences exist between men and women in gray matter volume changes after acute morphine treatment for chronic low back pain. Methods: This study analyzed data from 27 chronic low back pain patients (17 men, 10 women) who were treated with oral morphine over a period of 30 days. High-resolution structural images were acquired immediately before and after morphine treatment. Images were compared using voxel …
The Spinning Thread, Halley Marie Cotton
The Spinning Thread, Halley Marie Cotton
All ETDs from UAB
The poems comprised within this collection reimagine the Southern culture and identity. As a whole these poems explore themes such as family, craftsmanship, folklore, and the tension between humanity and nature. The overarching narrative revolves around the idea of transformation. Here, the speaker transforms from the mundane to the mythological and natural elements are acted upon to produce a shift in their physical state. These poems examine several inter- and intra- personal relationships typically in a state of recollection or unrest. Memory and a harkening to ancestral roots tend to inform the speaker’s thoughts and actions. While many of these …
La Cámara Insurrecta. La Fotografía Como Desobediencia Al Sistema Heteronormativo, Mariana Yanina Olivares
La Cámara Insurrecta. La Fotografía Como Desobediencia Al Sistema Heteronormativo, Mariana Yanina Olivares
LSU Master's Theses
The heteronormative society establishes a systematic foundation of oppression based on its construction of the sex/gender system. Teresa de Lauretis expresses the heteronormative system as the culprit for the dualistic division; which is reproduced and regulated as natural through technologies of gender. Gender can be deduced as a product of the heterocentric society’s performativity ideal as well as medical, juridical, cinema, cybernetic, and photographic technologies amongst others (Paul Preciado, “Biopolítica del género”). Said devices collaborate in the naturalization of the heterocentric discourse on the basis of the construction and diffusion of gender models. By virtue of this thesis, photography is …

Momentary Eddies, Leah Marie Hamel
Momentary Eddies, Leah Marie Hamel
LSU Master's Theses
Our lives are in a constant state of change, from the most intimate scale physically and emotionally to the world surrounding us externally. The relationships we build with ourselves, others, and the world surrounding us are important structures we carry with us throughout life. Momentary Eddies is a visual poem about the interconnectedness of our inner and outer landscapes. I have created a hauntingly dreamlike space that explores a landscape of emotions that are an entangled part of personal intimate relationships and how the emotional and physical topographies of these relationships connect to the environment surrounding us. These paper sculptures …

Brazilian Surrealism: The Art Of Walter Lewy, Glauco Adorno
Brazilian Surrealism: The Art Of Walter Lewy, Glauco Adorno
LSU Master's Theses
Walter Max Lewy (1905 – 1995) was a Surrealist painter and graphic designer who worked in Brazil for most of his career. Born in Germany to a Jewish family, the artist was forced to flee Europe in the eve of the Second World War, finding a safe haven in the city of São Paulo. The city’s budding modern art scene provided solid ground for Lewy’s art to flourish. His achievements epitomize the global occurrence of Modernism, in its manifestations outside the traditional Western artistic centers of the world. This thesis is the first comprehensive analysis of Walter Lewy’s life and …
A Critical Examination Of The Rehearsal Frame Model, Allison Elise Carroll
A Critical Examination Of The Rehearsal Frame Model, Allison Elise Carroll
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the practical adequacy of Duke’s (1994) rehearsal frame model as a “middle ground” perspective sequential outline of rehearsal events that lead to positive musical change. Observation and video recording of three accomplished high school band directors’ rehearsals generated data that allowed for a comparison between the model and actual practice. Results suggested that all parts of the original model need not be present, nor must they occur in the originally stated order for rehearsal frames to take place and direct students toward positive musical change. An amended model of the rehearsal frame …

Is Book The Same As Libro? A Comparative Study Of Lexical Access In Heritage Speakers And L2 Learners, María Gabriela Puscama
Is Book The Same As Libro? A Comparative Study Of Lexical Access In Heritage Speakers And L2 Learners, María Gabriela Puscama
LSU Master's Theses
ABSTRACT The Revised Hierarchical Model (RHM) posits an organization of the bilingual lexicon based on conceptual and lexical links between first (L1) and second (L2) language words (Kroll & Stewart, 1994). This model predicts that increasing L2 proficiency would lead to the strengthening of conceptual links between L1 and L2 words (Cheng & Leung, 1989; Dong et al., 2005, Francis et al., 2014). The question arises, however, whether proficiency is the only predictor of conceptual link strength. Some studies suggest that L2 word processing may be different in heritage speakers and adult L2 learners who have similar L2 proficiency, but …
Jockeying For Position: Horse Racing In New Orleans, 1865-1920, Matthew Saul Perreault
Jockeying For Position: Horse Racing In New Orleans, 1865-1920, Matthew Saul Perreault
LSU Master's Theses
From 1865 to 1920, Thoroughbred horse racing matured in Louisiana, developing into a national sport shaped by the processes of modernization, professionalization, and reform. Before the onset of the Civil War, the leaders of Southern thoroughbred horse racing came from the planter elite who used African-American slave horsemen in shows of “amateur” recreation. Combining upper-class recreation with lower and middle-class entertainment, horse racing was a performance of social power. The Civil War devastated the Louisiana turf, scattering horses and men – but sportsmen proposed that post-war racing would help the state recover. The once-independent New Orleans turf joined an interconnected …

A Crow And A Hanger, Kelsey Ann-Morgan Livingston
LSU Master's Theses
A Crow and A Hanger is a body of work that explores and illustrates the nature of life and death through the use of mixed-media drawing and printmaking techniques. My intention for this work, and this thesis paper, is to explain my thought process and how the imagery came to be. For me it is not at all important for every viewer to fully understand each image and the thoughts that went into the body as a whole. I let the images and their titles lead the viewer in a general direction and allow for their personal history and biases …

The Cleveland Jewish Society Book: Vol. Ii, 1917, The Jewish Independent Publishing Co.
Cleveland Memory
The Cleveland Jewish Society Books were published from 1915 to 1925 by the Jewish Independent Publishing Company, a locally owned publisher that published the weekly Jewish Independent. The books were similar in appearance to the Cleveland Blue Book, a guide for society’s elite. The listings in the Cleveland book listed individuals by country club. The Jewish books list individuals by congregations. In many cases there are separate lists of the congregations’ ladies auxiliary, along with information on social service agencies. The book also included advertisements.
Arabic Teachers' Perception Of An Integrated Approach For Teaching Arabic As A Foreign Language In Colleges And Universities In The United States, Abeer Al-Mohsen
Arabic Teachers' Perception Of An Integrated Approach For Teaching Arabic As A Foreign Language In Colleges And Universities In The United States, Abeer Al-Mohsen
Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines the perception of Arabic teachers on whether an integrated approach is critical for students’ communicative competence in Arabic. Additionally, the study attempts to uncover what might be potential barriers to the integrated-approach program-wide implementation in the field of Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language in higher education institutes in the United States. Although many studies investigated students’ perception of learning Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) only, few studies focused on teachers’ perceptions of the issue and understanding of what communicative Arabic instruction should entail.
Using a mixed-method study, the researcher conducted the study in two sequential phases: a …
The House In South Asian Muslim Women’S Early Anglophone Life-Writing And Novels, Diviani Chaudhuri
The House In South Asian Muslim Women’S Early Anglophone Life-Writing And Novels, Diviani Chaudhuri
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation undertakes the first sustained examination of representations of Islamicate material culture, domestic interiors, residential forms, and historic sites in the early Anglophone writing of South Asian Muslim women. Reading the memoirs of Pakistani diplomat Shaista Suhrawardy Ikramullah, From Purdah to Parliament (1963), in conjunction with three early Anglophone novels, namely, Zeenuth Futehally’s Zohra (1951), Mumtaz Shah Nawaz’s The Heart Divided (1957), and Attia Hosain’s Sunlight on a Broken Column (1961), I develop the analytic category of autoethnographic spatial discourse in contradistinction to the harem fantasy inflected colonial spatial discourse prevalent at the time in order to describe the …
Samuel Barber’S Settings Of James Joyce’S Chamber Music: A Proposal For A Posthumous Song Cycle, Michael Pierre Laroche
Samuel Barber’S Settings Of James Joyce’S Chamber Music: A Proposal For A Posthumous Song Cycle, Michael Pierre Laroche
Theses and Dissertations
Samuel Barber’s Opus 10 songs are some of his most well-known vocal works. These settings from Chamber Music by James Joyce were published in 1939, but posthumous research by biographer Barbara Heyman and a complete vocal recordings project by Thomas Hampson, Cheryl Studer, and John Browning led to the discovery and recording of ten additional songs, including three more Joyce settings. Schirmer published these Ten Early Songs around the same time as the Deutsche Grammophon. Research has shown the dates of composition to be within days of the published Opus 10 songs, but no other information on these songs exists …
Writing Practice: Invention And Pedagogy In Composition, Nathaniel Street
Writing Practice: Invention And Pedagogy In Composition, Nathaniel Street
Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation re-engages a central question of composition and rhetoric – can writing be taught? – as a means of interrogating the relationship between form and response. In so doing, I argue that writing can be trained as a set of capacities and dispositions through repeated practice with rhetorical forms. In advancing this claim, I demonstrate that formal practices, such as modal writing, imitation, and repetition, have been unfairly dismissed as overly rote and mechanical because form has traditionally been understood as a technical means of achieving a particular end. I argue that, instead, repeated engagement with and movement between …
