English-Thai Code-Switching Of Teachers In Esp Classes, Korawan Promnath, Chamaipak Tayjasanant
English-Thai Code-Switching Of Teachers In Esp Classes, Korawan Promnath, Chamaipak Tayjasanant
PASAA
The term code-switching (CS) that occurs in everyday situations, or naturalistic code-switching, has been a controversial strategy regarding whether it benefits or impedes language learning. The aim of this study was to investigate CS in conversations between teachers and students of ESP classes in order to explore the types and functions of CS usually used in the teaching and learning process, and to investigate the teachers' and students' opinions about CS in classroom practice, particularly in English for nursing and tourism classes.
The Development And Validation Of Willingness-To-Listen In L2 (Wtl) Scale, Ahmet Selçuk Akdemir
The Development And Validation Of Willingness-To-Listen In L2 (Wtl) Scale, Ahmet Selçuk Akdemir
PASAA
This study aims to develop and validate a willingness to listen (WTL) scale for second language (L2) contexts. There are several studies on willingness to communicate (WTC) in L2. However, most of these studies are based on the speaking dimension of communication. As an ignored dimension, listening in L2 is underestimated in WTC research. The study is based on the fact that listening, along with speaking, composes an important part of communication in L2 contexts. In order to develop a valid and reliable WTL in L2 scale, a series of analyses has been carried out after creating the items for …
Book Review : Exploring Psychology In Language Learning And Teaching, Chamaipak Tayjasanant
Book Review : Exploring Psychology In Language Learning And Teaching, Chamaipak Tayjasanant
PASAA
This book, written by acknowledged experts in the field of psychology and language learning, is a welcomed addition to the EFL literature. Unlike many books in the field of EFL/TESOL which tend to focus on introducing new trends in teaching with little account of psychology, the aim of this book is to encourage language teachers to manage their classrooms with awareness of the feelings and sensitivities that different learners bring to the learning process. Major concepts of social and educational psychology related to language teaching and learning have been carefully selected and discussed in the eight chapters of the book, …

Iambic Metapoetics In Horace, Epodes 8 And 12, Erika Zimmerman Damer
Iambic Metapoetics In Horace, Epodes 8 And 12, Erika Zimmerman Damer
Classical Studies Faculty Publications
When in Book 1 of his Epistles Horace reflects back upon the beginning of his career in lyric poetry, he celebrates his adaptation of Archilochean iambos to the Latin language. He further states that while he followed the meter and spirit of Archilochus, his own iambi did not follow the matter and attacking words that drove the daughters of Lycambes to commit suicide (Epist. 1.19.23–5, 31).1 The paired erotic invectives, Epodes 8 and 12, however, thematize the poet’s sexual impotence and his disgust during encounters with a repulsive sexual partner. The tone of these Epodes is unmistakably that of …
The Sanskrit Source Of The Tocharian 4x25-Syllable Meter, Dieter C. Gunkel
The Sanskrit Source Of The Tocharian 4x25-Syllable Meter, Dieter C. Gunkel
Classical Studies Faculty Publications
Were Tocharian meters influenced by Indic meters, and if so, to what extent? Since the outset of Tocharian studies, the prevalent opinion has been that the Tocharian metrical tradition, which is shared by both Tocharian languages, is independent of the Indian tradition. In Sieg and Siegling's original formulation, "Die tocharische Metrik scheint selbständig dazustehen und nicht der indischen entlehnt zu sein" (1921:x).1 The supposed independence of the metrical form of Tocharian poetry may seem surprising given that the poetic texts are translations and adaptations of Buddhist Sanskrit originals. Furthermore, the Tocharian Buddhists did adopt the form of narration known …
Burial Klinai And Totenmahl?, Elizabeth P. Baughan
Burial Klinai And Totenmahl?, Elizabeth P. Baughan
Classical Studies Faculty Publications
How can burial furnishings help to clarify the meanings of banqueting imagery in funerary art and the place of banqueting in funerary ideologies? Should tombs furnished with klinai or replicas of banquet couches be understood as representations of banqueting, meant to equip the dead for an eternal ‘Totenmahl’? Or do funeral couches mark their occupants as members of the elite class that enjoyed banqueting and/or luxury furniture while alive? These questions are not so easily answered, because klinai in the ancient Greek world were multifunctional furnishings, used for sleeping and resting as well as for dining and revelry, …

“Let it be remembered that events narrated in this chronicle – full of veracity, albeit lacking in brilliance – took place during the worst years of the military dictatorship and the most rigid censorship of the press. There was a hidden reality, a secret country that didn’t get into the news. The newsrooms of newspapers and radio and television stations found themselves restricted to covering generally unexpected events. Their editorial pages were reduced to unconditional praise for the system of government and those who governed.” Jorge Amado
In the epigraph above, the narrator of The War of the Saints, …

Understanding The Factors Affecting Engagement And Retention Of 20-30 Year Old Telephone Crisis Supporters At Lifeline In Sydney, Jennifer Walter
Understanding The Factors Affecting Engagement And Retention Of 20-30 Year Old Telephone Crisis Supporters At Lifeline In Sydney, Jennifer Walter
Theses
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give” (Winston Churchill).
Every year, millions of people volunteer their time to help others in various ways. This study focuses on 20 to 30 year old telephone crisis supporters (TCS) at Lifeline in Sydney. This cohort represents a large proportion of Lifeline TCS trainees, but has also been shown to be the group least likely to commit to extended periods of volunteering. The aim of this study was to provide 20 to 30 year old TCS volunteers a voice within Lifeline to gain an …

Marzo 1976 ¡Hasta siempre¡».

The Sketches For Mendelssohn's Paulus, Op. 36, Karl Joseph Simmerman
The Sketches For Mendelssohn's Paulus, Op. 36, Karl Joseph Simmerman
LSU Master's Theses
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Paulus, Op. 36 (1836) is one of the most important nineteenth-century contributions to the oratorio genre. Current scholarly understanding of the oratorio’s creation rests on three dissertations: Stuart Douglass Seaton identified, transcribed, and discussed some of the sketches for Paulus; Siegwart Reichwald examined the extant autographs for Paulus; and Jeffrey S. Sposato thoroughly documented the collaborative compilation of the libretto. None of these studies, however, provides a thorough examination of all the sketches for Paulus.
This study constitutes the first complete transcription of the sketches for Paulus, basing its methodology on the transcription practices …
“What Credit Is That To You?” The Social Context Of Moneylending In Medieval England A Comparative Study 1340-1509, Elizabeth Ann Green
“What Credit Is That To You?” The Social Context Of Moneylending In Medieval England A Comparative Study 1340-1509, Elizabeth Ann Green
LSU Master's Theses
This study makes use of the manorial court rolls of Dyffryn Clwyd, a cantref in Northern Wales, and the certificates of debt from London to examine the lives of two medieval usurers, Ieuan Kery and Sir William Capell, between the years 1340 to 1352 , and 1478 to 1509 . By examining the life of these two individuals who both operated one of the rarest, most socially complex occupations of his place and time, this study begins to expose the ways in which usury helped to shape the fabric of late Medieval culture in the British Isles. The singular focus …
The Impact Of A Visualizing And Verbalizing Language Intervention On Reading Ability In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Amy Rachel Lemelman
The Impact Of A Visualizing And Verbalizing Language Intervention On Reading Ability In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Amy Rachel Lemelman
All ETDs from UAB
Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) often exhibit deficits in language ranging from lack of functional speech to difficulties with pragmatic aspects of language. Notably, language comprehension is often impaired in individuals with ASD. Deficits in language processing frequently result in problems with reading, with the most common reading profile in children with ASD being that of adequate decoding abilities accompanied by poor comprehension. While language processing is an area of deficit, visuospatial processing is noted to be an area of strength for children with ASD. Therefore, an important question is whether a strength-oriented approach can be used to address …
Consecutive Connectors: A Study On Discourse Markers In Honduran Speech, Leeann Michelle Stover
Consecutive Connectors: A Study On Discourse Markers In Honduran Speech, Leeann Michelle Stover
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis addresses the question of discourse marker usage and function among a group of Honduran Spanish speakers who reside in Louisiana in an environment of English language contact. It seeks to descriptively outline the pragmatic functions of the consecutive connector markers entonces, así and pues, and to identify the meanings underlying these functions in informal conversation. As the first linguistic study of Hondurans in Baton Rouge, this thesis gives new insight to Spanish discourse marker usage in the United States. 19 Honduran speakers residing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana were interviewed, and their spontaneous speech was transcribed and analyzed for …

Boys On Blue Benches: Disfigured Veterans Of The First World War, Brenna K. Pritchard
Boys On Blue Benches: Disfigured Veterans Of The First World War, Brenna K. Pritchard
LSU Master's Theses
The First World War saw a multitude of facial wounds, with veterans coming home with severe facial mutilation numbering in the thousands. These veterans have been somewhat overlooked in the historiography of medicine in World War I, and this work seeks to remedy that by examining every aspect of their lives, from the moment of the wound, to the aftermath of their return home. The medical professionals who treated these men gave a great deal of thought to the philosophy behind their work, and frequently voiced the opinion that their work was essential for the wellness of these men’s psyches. …
Nightmares Are Dreams, Too, Camilla Meg Morrison
Nightmares Are Dreams, Too, Camilla Meg Morrison
LSU Master's Theses
This work explores themes of womanhood through the creation of an installation that is a blend of visual art and costume design. Often the initial creative impulse of a costume design can be compromised by the needs or necessity of a production. Using this instinct as a guide to the exploration of themes of womanhood, this journey will yield the design and production of highly theatrical and emotional pieces of art. The purpose of this work is to tell stories and share experiences of being a woman. The pieces will be displayed as an environmental installation that will invite the …

The Merging Of Ornamentation, Artistic Competence, And Social Structure In The Portraiture Oi Jeremiah Theus In Charleston, South Carolina, Tania Inniss
LSU Master's Theses
Previous research into the art of Jeremiah Theus has often left much to be desired. A common choice of historians is to discuss how he differs from artists of his time, or discuss him solely in the context of other artists. However, it is important to study Theus within his own framework. A study of his particular location, time period, family history, the subjects he elected to portray and the way he chose to portray them all help in understanding and recognizing what makes Theus unique as an artist. This thesis aims not only to address the research undertaken by …
