Adolescent Literacy And Collaborative Inquiry, Rob Simon, Amir Kalan Jan 2016

Adolescent Literacy And Collaborative Inquiry, Rob Simon, Amir Kalan

English Faculty Publications

In a teacher education classroom in Toronto, groups of middle school students, teacher candidates, and university researchers, members of our research collaborative, the Teaching to Learn Project (Simon et al., 2014; Simon & the Teaching to Learn Project, 2014), discuss projects developed from curricula they coauthored for Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel Maus: A Survivor’s Tale (1986). Maus documents Spiegelman’s father’s recollections of the Holocaust and the author’s own struggles to come to terms with what it means to be the child of a Holocaust survivor.

Youth and teachers involved in the Teaching to Learn Project collectively worked through what historian …

Access, Oppression, And Social (In)Justice In Epidemic Control: Race, Profession, And Communication In Sars Outbreaks In Canada And Singapore, Huiling Ding, Xiaoli Li, Austin Caldwell Haigler

English Faculty Publications

This article investigates issues of social injustice experienced by various oppressed groups in SARS outbreaks in 2003, paying particular attention to medical care workers in Canada and Singapore, with many of them being immigrants from East Asia and Southeast Asia. It identifies communication strategies employed by civic networks, especially nonprofit organizations, to help marginalized groups acquire institutional and literacy accesses so that they could respond more effectively to such injustices in complicated and multicultural contexts. Through combined use of Jost and Kay’s work on the three types of social justice (2010), oppression (Young, 1990), and access (Porter, 1998), this study …

Immigrants And Voting: How A Personal Relationship To Immigration Changes The Voting Behaviors Of Americans, Mandi Eatough, Jordan Johnston Jan 2016

Immigrants And Voting: How A Personal Relationship To Immigration Changes The Voting Behaviors Of Americans, Mandi Eatough, Jordan Johnston

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

In the last thirty years the number of immigrant voters, in the U.S. has increased from less than 5 percent of the population to more than 13 percent. With such an unprecedented increase in such a short amount of time, immigration reform has become one of the most significant and controversial issues in elections nationwide. Since the 1980s, the U.S. has faced consistently increasing levels of both legal and illegal immigration, an issue that is personally relevant to all immigrants regardless of legality (Tichenor 1994). This influx of immigrants has made immigration policy more important for politicians. Understanding the attitudes …

Voices Of Incarcerated Mothers, Markisha Robinson, Lukas Hamlescher, Jasmine Conkle Jan 2016

Voices Of Incarcerated Mothers, Markisha Robinson, Lukas Hamlescher, Jasmine Conkle

Undergraduate Research Posters 2016

This project was two-pronged—it explored the impact of video journaling on functional outcomes for incarcerated mothers, and it created documentary content for understanding methods for changing knowledge and attitudes toward incarcerated mothers in the general population. The project team developed and executed a threeweek original, pilot video reflective journaling program for incarcerated mothers at the Ohio Northeast Reintegration Center (NERC). Using the Motivation Enhancement and Therapy perspective, emergent themes for successful re-entry of the women into their families were discovered. And, the team collected a wide array of documentary assets—focus groups and individual interviews of incarcerated and released mothers, the …

Protest Voices: Using Activist Oral Histories To Teach Historical Thinking, Amanda Gedeon, Christopher Morris Jan 2016

Protest Voices: Using Activist Oral Histories To Teach Historical Thinking, Amanda Gedeon, Christopher Morris

Undergraduate Research Posters 2016

The goal of Protest Voices was to create classroom resources using oral history interviews for use in social studies classrooms. Oral histories remain underutilized as primary sources. In an effort to engage students with the historical thinking process, we created clips from oral history interviews of Cleveland-area peace activists and connected those clips to the Ohio Department of Education Social Studies standards. Our work focused on collecting interviews from individuals who were involved in antiVietnam protests and members of the Cleveland Latin American Mission team to El Salvador, as well as the InterReligious Task Force. The project created a collection …

The Minnesota Farm-Labor Party: The Role Of Third Parties In The Americanization Of European Labor Radicals In The Great Lakes Region, Paul Lubotina Jan 2016

The Minnesota Farm-Labor Party: The Role Of Third Parties In The Americanization Of European Labor Radicals In The Great Lakes Region, Paul Lubotina

Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region

This paper examines the political transformation of former radicals from Ethnic Socialist Parties, Industrial Workers of the World, and the Western Federation of Miners during the 1920s and 1930s, as they joined mainstream third party organizations such as The Nonpartisan League and Farm-Labor Party of Minnesota. Former resident of Copper Harbor, Michigan and mayor of Hibbing, Minnesota, Victor Power led a coalition of Americans and immigrants in a struggle to circumvent the burgeoning power of Ku Klux Klan members who dominated local government in the city, with the support of the United States Steel Corporation. This political battle between progressive …

The Upper Peninsula As It Was: What The Europeans Encountered, Robert Archibald Jan 2016

The Upper Peninsula As It Was: What The Europeans Encountered, Robert Archibald

Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region

This essay establishes a baseline for measuring environmental change caused by the influx of Europeans beginning in the seventeenth century. In it the author describes the natural forces including volcanism, sedimentation, geologic metamorphism, and glaciation as natural forces that shaped the landscape of the Upper Peninsula and created deposits of minerals. He uses survey notes, travel accounts and journals to describe flora and fauna prior to large-scale commercial exploitation

Playing For The People: Labor Sport Union Athletic Clubs In The Lake Superior/Iron Range 1927-1936, Gabe Logan Jan 2016

Playing For The People: Labor Sport Union Athletic Clubs In The Lake Superior/Iron Range 1927-1936, Gabe Logan

Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region

From 1927-1935 the United States Communist Party developed and implemented the Labor Sport Union (LSU). This athletic experiment encouraged workers to abandon paternalistic company teams, theologically inspired gyms such as the YMCA and YWCA, and withdraw their support from school sponsored athletics. Instead, workers would join the LSU, a worker controlled sporting fraternity. The LSU enjoyed support in the metropolitan centers of the Northeast and Midwest. However, it was also enthusiastically received in the rural mining and farming regions of Lake Superior. This work recounts the history of the LSU in general and its specific development in upper Michigan, northern …

The Mythical Landscapers Of Augustan Rome, Lissa Crofton-Sleigh Jan 2016

The Mythical Landscapers Of Augustan Rome, Lissa Crofton-Sleigh

Classics

The term landscape, according to Denis Cosgrove, denotes ‘the external world mediated through subjective human experience in a way that neither region nor area immediately suggest. Landscape is a construction, a composition of the world we see; in other words it is a way of seeing the world’. Cosgrove argues that, as a social and cultural product, this type of seeing is restrictive, diminish- ing alternative modes of experiencing our relations with nature.1 And yet this restrictive nature of landscape and viewing landscape can generate meaning unique to a specific group of people, i.e., a shared remembrance or memory. …

Dancing Fire, Helena Alfajora Jan 2016

Dancing Fire, Helena Alfajora

Canterbury Scholars

My creative process is like the Hero’s Journey. Wrought with “the call to action,” I felt a call from these pieces to bring them into our material world—the ideas, the moods, the colors wanting to translate from my mind through my hand and now, into this room. Through all the musings of our daily lives, these pieces came to be through different mediums with different mentors and different mindsets. The one constant throughout was my content, my inspiration, my grounding—the Hawaiian goddess, Pele.

Her form takes place in art, dance, written words, life, nature, my family, those around me. In …

Byzantine Manuscript Colophons And The Prosopography Of Scribal Activity, Jeremiah Coogan Jan 2016

Byzantine Manuscript Colophons And The Prosopography Of Scribal Activity, Jeremiah Coogan

Jesuit School of Theology

Byzantine scribes often appended notes to their completed handiwork, providing miscellaneous information about their lives and craft. These colophons frequently include valuable information such as the copyist’s name, the date, and the location. Yet while scholars have analysed the colophons in numerous ways, no one has systematically investigated the invaluable evidence that they provide about the contexts of manuscript transmission.

While palaeography can reveal the approximate dates of Byzantine manuscripts, it tells us far less about the contexts through which they were transmitted. Moreover, since extant manuscripts have most often been preserved in monasteries, scholars frequently assume that literary textual …

A Mark In Salvadoran History, Jose Alvarado Jan 2016

A Mark In Salvadoran History, Jose Alvarado

Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects

El Salvador is considered one of the smallest countries in Central America. This miniature country went through a very gruesome civil war that took the lives of 75,000 victims. Violence has always been a factor that exists in the country, ever since it first originated. The Salvadoran civil war had many effects on the country and the citizens including migrations, poverty, and violence that still continue to this day.

The Salvadoran Civil War had many effects on the country, not just economically, but also socially. This research answered many of my questions, but some still remain unanswered. Does the country …

Take A Stand For Feminism, Michaella Deladia Jan 2016

Take A Stand For Feminism, Michaella Deladia

Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects

The women’s movement is a new wave of feminisim that fights for the abolishment of the harassment and hyper-sexualization of women. It’s important because in today’s society, women are constantly getting degraded compared to men. It’s time to end the prejudice and see everybody as equals. I found that it’s a growing problem but anybody can become aware and realize the issues that surround us.

I do agree with with the information that I found saying that women really can’t be considered to have obtained these equality rights until people stop demeaning them in everyday life. The push for equality …
