The Military Career Of James Gettys, Melissa M. Gettys, Amanda A. Howlett
The Military Career Of James Gettys, Melissa M. Gettys, Amanda A. Howlett
Adams County History
James Gettys was a Federalist, tried and true. From his role in the American Revolution to his final position as Vice Brigadier General during the War of 1812, James understood the necessity for “we the people” to remain united as one, power in numbers. He lived that way, worked that way, and built his town on that premise. Like most of the frontiersmen of his time, his life was difficult, and his rise to the top was not always met with valor. Much like his father, Samuel, James Gettys fought for everything he had, and his attainments were well earned. …

Fighting Civil Rights And The Cold War: Confederate Monuments At Gettysburg, Jill Ogline Titus
Fighting Civil Rights And The Cold War: Confederate Monuments At Gettysburg, Jill Ogline Titus
Civil War Institute Faculty Publications
It's been interesting and instructive to see the ongoing debate over Confederate iconography unfold from the vantage point of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, one of the nation's premier centers of Civil War memory. Many of the conversations taking place in town are similar to ones happening around the country, but a few elements have been noteworthy. In Gettysburg, flag debates have by and large revolved around First Amendment rights, honoring ancestors and their cause, and the demands of heritage tourism, and not around civic identity or the appropriateness of the flag's use as a symbol of the state. Games are beautifully crafted microworlds that invite players to explore complex terrains that spring into existence from even simple rules. As AI educators, games can offer fun ways of teaching important concepts and techniques. Just as Martin Gardner employed games and puzzles to engage both amateurs and professionals in the pursuit of Mathematics, a well-chosen game or puzzle can provide a catalyst for AI learning and research. Negotiating Gender And Sexuality In Contemporary Turkey, Jaspal Kaur Singh, Mary Lou O'Neil
Negotiating Gender And Sexuality In Contemporary Turkey, Jaspal Kaur Singh, Mary Lou O'Neil
Books
Turkey is often visualized as a modern nation-state having a perfect balance of Eastern and Western cultural mores and traditions within dominant ideological constructions and representations, but on closer inspection, one can detect conflicts and contradictions within various texts—particularly in regards to depictions of gender and sexual identity. Upon its foundation as a nation, Turkey embarked on a state-centered, elite-driven path toward modernization and Westernization while also seeking to produce a monolithic culture. At the time, it was widely believed that Turkey could not rank among modern,
Western countries without the emancipation of women. As a result of the founding …

Animals & Ethics 101: Thinking Critically About Animal Rights, Nathan Nobis
Moral Standing and Animal Rights Collection
This book provides an overview of the current debates about the nature and extent of our moral obligations to animals. Which, if any, uses of animals are morally wrong, which are morally permissible (i.e., not wrong) and why? What, if any, moral obligations do we, individually and as a society (and a global community), have towards animals and why? How should animals be treated? Why? We will explore the most influential and most developed answers to these questions – given by philosophers, scientists, and animal advocates and their critics – to try to determine which positions are supported by the …

Jagadish Chandra Bose And Vedantic Science, C. Mackenzie Brown

'The real is one: wise men call it variously.' Utilizing this celebrated declaration of the Rig Veda as an epigraph in his first scientific monograph, Response in the Living and Non-Living, (1902), the audacious Indian physicist Jagadish Chandra Bose (1858-1937) intimated to the Western scientific world that his electrographic discovery of the unity of life - that the animate and the inanimate world are one - was an affirmation of the insights of the ancient Vedic seers.

A Birthday For The Upper Peninsula, Mark Ruge
A Birthday For The Upper Peninsula, Mark Ruge
Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region
Everyone and everything should have its own birthday, particularly a special place like Michigan's Upper Peninsula, which does not. In this article, the author traces the political machinations of Michigan and the Upper Peninsula with a goal of finding the most appropriate birthday. He and the attendees at the Sonderegger Symposium XVI, sponsored by the Center for U.P. Studies, at Northern Michigan University, settle on December 14, 1836, the date when the final condition was met to establish the boundaries of Michigan as a state—boundaries that for the first time included the entirety of the Upper Peninsula as we know …
Christian Higher Education And Students With Diverse Beliefs: Impacts And Challenges, Elize Celic, Beverly Christian, Andrew Matthes
Christian Higher Education And Students With Diverse Beliefs: Impacts And Challenges, Elize Celic, Beverly Christian, Andrew Matthes
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
The ethos, mission, and values of Christian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are usually grounded in a biblical worldview. Increasingly, Christian HEIs are attracting students who do not share the faith espoused by the institutions they attend. This qualitative case study explored the perceptions of six final-year education students with different belief frameworks to those of the Christian HEI they attended. They were interviewed to determine their perceptions of the transparency of the ethos, mission, and values of the HEI, the impact of the HEI on their lives, and the challenges they faced as students. The data revealed some positive impacts …

Application Of The Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory (Sisri-24) Among Hong Kong University Students, Arita W. Y. Chan, Angela F. Y. Siu
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory (SISRI-24). Two hundred thirteen undergraduate students in Hong Kong completed the Chinese SISRI-24, the Meaning of Life Questionnaire, the Metapersonal Self-Construal Scale, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale to allow examination of internal reliability and construct validity. Confirmatory factor analysis was also performed to examine whether the model of King and DeCicco (2009) fit our data. Our results indicated that the full scale of the Chinese SISRI-24 and its four subscales had acceptable internal reliability. The results also showed …

My career in writing studies was originally inspired by the convergence of my academic interests and my natural inclination to play with technology. In the 15 years since I was in school, the technology has changed, the way people communicate with technology has changed, the students' technological immersion has changed, and the scholarship had changed. My goal was to walk around in the 21st century landscape to try to reorient and re-inspire myself and make some connections between traditional and digital literacies. In particular, I was interested in reflecting on two areas that had become quite central to the scholarly …

Efl College Students’ Experiences And Attitudes Towards Teacher-Student Writing Conferences, Chun-Chun Yeh
Journal of Response to Writing
A substantial body of research has demonstrated the important role of providing feedback in students’ writing development. Among the various feedback methods, the teacher-student writing conference has often been rated by learners as the most beneficial to writing development, but research on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ perceptions of writing conferences is scant. Aiming to investigate students’ experiences and attitudes towards writing conferences, this study collected data through questionnaires and individual interviews with 34 EFL students from 2 college English writing classes. Findings suggested that the students held high expectations and gave high ratings on the helpfulness and …

Place And Politics At The Frankfurt Paulskirche After 1945, Shelley Rose
Place And Politics At The Frankfurt Paulskirche After 1945, Shelley Rose
History Faculty Publications
This article investigates the reconstruction of the Frankfurt Paulskirche as a symbol of German democratic identity after World War II. The place memory of the Paulskirche is deeply rooted in the 1848 Parliament which anticipated the formation of a German democratic state. The church provided postwar Germans with a physical anchor for their sense of history and feelings of Heimat. This place identity pervades post-1945 debates about the reconstruction of the church and the appropriate uses of that space in the context of Frankfurt’s devastated urban and political landscape. Despite this, the place identity of the Paulskirche remains understudied in …

[Book Review] Modernism, Media, And The Virtual, Yair Solan
Humanities and Politics Faculty Articles
Katherine Biers's Virtual Modernism: Writing and Technology in the Progressive Era outlines the virtual turn in early American modernism, arguing that modernist writers fashioned a “poetics of the virtual” in response to mass culture and its developing communications technologies before the First World War. The book examines five authors (Stephen Crane, Henry James, James Weldon Johnson, Djuna Barnes, Gertrude Stein), placing their work in conversation with various forms of mass media as well as the vitalist and pragmatist philosophy of Henri Bergson and William James that theorized the nature of virtual experience. Biers demonstrates how these writers both drew upon …

Claws And Controllers: Werewolves And Lycanthropy In Digital Games, Melissa Bianchi
Communication, Media, and Arts Faculty Articles
Bridging a host of narrative and procedural genres, werewolves feature prominently in videogames as characters to control, enemies to kill, and allies to assist. Yet, despite the broad range of werewolf depictions found in games, there is a relative paucity of research examining how games depict werewolves and how these depictions relate to the mythos writ large. To address gamic werewolves specifically, this essay performs close readings of several games, notably The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (2006) and The Sims 2: Pets (2006). The readings are guided by the works of media scholars, including Alexander Galloway, Ian Bogost, Souvik …
