Developing A Support Center Without Borders: Enhancing Services For Students Without Documentation, Edith Melendez Jan 2016

Developing A Support Center Without Borders: Enhancing Services For Students Without Documentation, Edith Melendez

2016 Symposium

College students without documentation (students) face many academic support hardships. As defined by the National Immigration Law Center, an undocumented person is a foreign national who resides in the United States with fraudulent documents or entered without authorization. Every year hundreds of motivated students with high potential to succeed in an academic setting enroll into four-year university with hopes of becoming upwardly mobile and contributing to society. Unlike college students with authorization, they have added stress and pressures relating to overcoming financial, social, and educational challenges. Despite these obstacles and legal status, they persevere and achieve academic success along educational …

Alexander The Great And Aristotle's Philosopher King, Mica Pointer Jan 2016

Alexander The Great And Aristotle's Philosopher King, Mica Pointer

2016 Symposium

Alexander III of Macedon has often been regarded as the prodigal student of Aristotle, acting on and bringing into fruition his tutor’s ideas of what it is to be a good ruler. While this was fulfilled in part with regards to Alexander’s battlefield prowess and his embodying a god-like status as ruler, there are many other ways in which he falls short of Aristotle’s ideal philosopher king. Such examples include disregarding the advice of his men and being guided more by passion than by reason. In this paper, I will assess evidence for both of these positions with regards to …

Rebels From The Waist Down: An Exploration Of Sex And Love In 1984, Charles R. Vaught Jr. Jan 2016

Rebels From The Waist Down: An Exploration Of Sex And Love In 1984, Charles R. Vaught Jr.

2016 Symposium

In 1984, George Orwell depicts a dystopian vision of London. The novel, published in 1949, is a depressing and unhopeful look at the future. However, at its core 1984 is much more than just a futuristic science fiction tale, it is a sexually tragic love story. Throughout the novel, Orwell represents sexuality in this dystopian society as something that has to be suppressed and ultimately warped into a forced love for Big Brother. The very act of sex for fun is viewed as an act of revolt, and those who participate in it are depicted as insurgents. This distorted …

To Be A Viscera Technician, Charles R. Vaught Jr.

2016 Symposium

As a writer, I have been influenced by my numerous travels, the people I meet, and the adventures I get into. These are the subjects that both fascinate me and inspire me to put pen to paper. My intent with my writing is to shed light onto the overlooked aspects of the world we live in. I write stories that deal with reality, as I know it. I write about wildland firefighters, fishermen, and nomadic travelers. Every story I write I pull from my own experiences. Today I will be reading a chapter from my unpublished memoir, “a story of …

Ilhan, Nura, Radwa, Ziagull And Children, Ilhan, Tsos

TSOS Interview Gallery

Ilhan, his wife Nura, and their children resided near Kabul, in a region where both the Taliban and ISIS were active. As Shias, Ilhan’s family faced numerous menaces, including threats from ISIS that they would be beheaded if they did not display ISIS flags. Ilhan’s sister Radwa, who is deaf and mute, was forced to marry a regional leader. In addition to being threatened on religious grounds, Ilhan’s family was also threatened by an elder of their town. Out of desperation, Ilhan’s family sold their house appliances, escaped Afghanistan, and arrived at the …

The Gasoline Tree, Brianne Manning Jan 2016

The Gasoline Tree, Brianne Manning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In exploration of Millennial anxieties and the power of dreaming, The Gasoline Tree imagines a soundtrack for the revelations, defeats, and curiosities of leaving childhood behind. This is a collection of 40 poems that examines eating disorders, gender roles, physical abuse, sex, infidelity, loneliness, and the fear of losing one's parents. This collection also contemplates the brutalities and muted delights of what drives us all: love, in all of its forms. "The Gasoline Tree," "Wolf of Chocorua," and many other poems construct New England landscapes that pay homage to the pastoral uniqueness of Maxine Kumin and Galway Kinnell, while poems …

Ethics And Animals: Extending Ethics Beyond Our Own Species, Peter Singer Jan 2016

Ethics And Animals: Extending Ethics Beyond Our Own Species, Peter Singer

The Chautauqua Journal

It is commonly held that ethics is about how we ought to treat other human beings. On this view, how we ought to treat animals is not properly part of ethics, or at best, if the treatment of animals is included within ethics at all, then animals have a second-class moral status. We have the right to use them as we see fit, to satisfy our needs and desires without regard to their interests, as long as we do not engage in gratuitous cruelty.

In the pages that follow, I shall argue that this standard view of our moral responsibilities …

Nature's Humans, The National Juried Art Exhibition, Esther E. Randall Jan 2016

Nature's Humans, The National Juried Art Exhibition, Esther E. Randall

The Chautauqua Journal

Each year, the Giles Gallery at Eastern Kentucky University, in conjunction with the Chautauqua Lecture Series, mounts a juried art exhibition organized around that year’s theme. Ann Tower of Ann Tower Gallery served as juror for the 2010-2011 show (January 24 through February 18, 2011), Chautauqua National Juried Exhibition: Nature’s Humans. Both the selection of the artwork and the awarding of prizes were done through a blind process, meaning that the juror had no information about the individual artists or their background.

Art exhibitions organized around a theme present special problems for artists. Their restrictive nature excludes many artists …

Bonobo Mirror Project, Laura L. Newhart Ph.D. Jan 2016

Bonobo Mirror Project, Laura L. Newhart Ph.D.

The Chautauqua Journal

I undertook “The Bonobo Mirror Project” within the context of a graduate level course entitled Primate Behavior and Conservation that was jointly sponsored by Miami University of Ohio, the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, and Project Dragonfly. The goal of such “Zoo Expedition” courses is to promote inquiry-based learning, community involvement, and conservation. I found it both challenging and rewarding to combine my philosophical training with this very empirically based scientific method of inquiry. The empirical question that “The Bonobo Mirror Project” attempts to answer is: How does the ratio of positive to negative comments made by visitors to the …

Rituals And Performance In Gastronomy, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau Jan 2016

Rituals And Performance In Gastronomy, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau

Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

I would like to explore, in this paper, the performative and ritualistic aspects of gastronomy and sharing meals. Because eating is something we have to do quite often, it is filled with a social function that is very culture dependent. At the same time, in every culture, we find some performative and ritualistic elements associated with eating and sharing a meal.

In this paper, I will interrogate the performative and ritualistic aspects of family meals as well as meals that have a function like a meeting or a reunion. In a second part, I will explore how some chefs articulate …

Chronic Tomboys: Feminism, Survival, And Paranoia In Jodie Foster’S Body Of Work, Lynne Stahl Jan 2016

Chronic Tomboys: Feminism, Survival, And Paranoia In Jodie Foster’S Body Of Work, Lynne Stahl

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

From Freaky Friday (1976) to Flightplan (2005), Jodie Foster has made a career of defying gender norms–a defiance predicated largely upon her characteristically tomboyish embodiment and a mode of being that combines activeness, visual agency, and a distinctively resistant demeanor that spans her body of work to the extent that one can hardly watch any one of her films without involuntary recourse to her earlier and later movies. This essay takes up David Fincher’s Panic Room (2002), which unites tomboy figures of two generations in Foster and Kristen Stewart and works, in light of the former’s corpus and its feminist …
