Prefacing Texts, Authorizing Authors, And Constructing Selves: The Preface As Autobiographical Space, Julie A. Eckerle
Prefacing Texts, Authorizing Authors, And Constructing Selves: The Preface As Autobiographical Space, Julie A. Eckerle
English Publications
The preface is a unique textual space, one that demands very particular kind of rhetoric because of its generic constraints and yet allows ample room for an author's manipulation and creativity. Perhaps the best articulation of the prefaces paradoxical nature appears in Barbara Johnson's playful response to Jacques Derrida's Dissemination. The autobiographical details summarized here paradoxically depict Speght as the heroic defender of all people and, simultaneously, a woman who clearly knows her place. In her work on French Renaissance women writers, Anne R. Larsen reveals the value of this kind of study: Early women writers exploited the prefaces marginality …

Foundational Frustrations: Incest And Incompletion In Cirilo Villaverde's Cecilia Valdés, Thomas Genova
Foundational Frustrations: Incest And Incompletion In Cirilo Villaverde's Cecilia Valdés, Thomas Genova
Spanish Publications
This article explores the evolution of author Cirilo Villaverde’s racial republican thinking as it develops through the three Cecilia Valdés texts. Contending that—precisely because the incest trope is absent from the 1839 works—an examination of the two earlier versions of the story can shed light on the troubling place of consanguinity in the 1882 novel, I consider the three Cecilia texts in light of the genre that theorist Doris Sommer terms “foundational romances,” or, works in which marriage between members of opposing factions in the national body acts as an allegory for national consolidation. After situating Villaverde in the context …
Microcosm Of Transition: The Northeast Insula Project At Hippos Of The Decapolis, Mark Schuler
Microcosm Of Transition: The Northeast Insula Project At Hippos Of The Decapolis, Mark Schuler
Papers and Presentations
Twelve seasons of work at Hippos of the Decapolis have exposed a 50 x 65 meter quadrant north of the Decumanus Maximus containing structures from the three main phases of the occupation of Hippos: the House of Tyche--a Roman peristyle house with a garden; the Northeast Church--a small memorial chapel for a revered woman; and an Umayyad meeting hall. The quadrant also demonstrates the decline and intentional abandonment of this part of the city prior to the great earthquake of the mid eighth century CE.
Evil And Evidence, Matthew A. Benton, John Hawthorne, Yoaav Isaacs
Evil And Evidence, Matthew A. Benton, John Hawthorne, Yoaav Isaacs
SPU Works
The problem of evil is the most prominent argument against the existence of God. Skeptical theists contend that it is not a good argument. Their reasons for this contention vary widely, involving such notions as CORNEA, epistemic appearances, 'gratuitous' evils, 'levering' evidence, and the representativeness of goods. We aim to dispel some confusions about these notions, in particular by clarifying their roles within a probabilistic epistemology. In addition, we develop new responses to the problem of evil from both the phenomenal conception of evidence and the 'knowledge-first' view of evidence.
Expert Opinion And Second-Hand Knowledge, Matthew A. Benton
Expert Opinion And Second-Hand Knowledge, Matthew A. Benton
SPU Works
Expert testimony figures in recent debates over how best to understand the norm of assertion and the domain-specific epistemic expectations placed on testifiers. Cases of experts asserting with only isolated second-hand knowledge Jennifer (Lackey 2011, 2013) have been used to shed light on whether knowledge is sufficient for epistemically permissible assertion. I argue that relying on such cases of expert testimony introduces several problems concerning how we understand expert knowledge, and the sharing of such knowledge through testimony. Refinements are needed to clarify exactly what principles are being tested by such cases; but once refined, such cases raise more questions …
Reason And Emotion, Not Reason Or Emotion In Moral Judgment, Leland F. Saunders
Reason And Emotion, Not Reason Or Emotion In Moral Judgment, Leland F. Saunders
SPU Works
One of the central questions in both metaethics and empirical moral psychology is whether moral judgments are the products of reason or emotions. This way of putting the question relies on an overly simplified view of reason and emotion as two fully independent cognitive faculties whose causal contributions to moral judgment can be cleanly separated. However, there is a significant body of evidence in the cognitive sciences that seriously undercuts this conception of reason and emotion, and supports the view that moral judgments are caused by a complex interplay of psychological mechanisms that are both cognitive and affective, but in …

Orna Me: Laurence Sterne’S Open Letter To Literary History, Celia B. Barnes
Orna Me: Laurence Sterne’S Open Letter To Literary History, Celia B. Barnes
Faculty Publications
This essay considers the curious way Laurence Sterne communicates with and reflects on his literary predecessors, most often Alexander Pope, by writing love letters to women. Focusing primarily on his correspondence with Elizabeth Draper, Barnes contends that, even as Sterne looks back to Pope to guarantee himself a place in literary history, he looks forward to women like Draper to ensure his name will survive. Thus, erotic correspondence becomes an important way of ensuring Sterne’s literary estate, or as he terms it, his “futurity.” “Orna Me”—a phrase that means, roughly, “ornament me” or “set me off,” and that Sterne got …

66˚ 33' is the latitude of the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, and this exhibition considers these geographic areas as inspiration for the visual arts. In addition, it utilizes the visual arts as a mode by which to encourage viewers to more deeply engage with the planet’s most northerly and southerly regions. It considers the issues, history and environment of the regions, spanning media, process and subject – from the figural to the abstract, tactile to sound, analog to digital.
This exhibition was a collaboration with the Augustana Center for Polar Studies.

The Killing Of An ‘Angry Black Woman’: Sandra Bland And The Politics Of Respectability, Victoria D. Gillon
The Killing Of An ‘Angry Black Woman’: Sandra Bland And The Politics Of Respectability, Victoria D. Gillon
Eddie Mabry Diversity Award
On July 13th, 2015, 28-year-old Sandra Bland was pulled over by a police officer in Waller County, TX, for failure to signal a lane change. Around six minutes later, Bland was being slammed and handcuffed to the ground. What happened in these six minutes that caused a minor traffic violation to escalate to what would later be three days in jail, concluding with Bland’s death? Hundreds of years of significations towards black women led to Sandra Bland’s arrest. However, at a time when Bland was perceived to be at her most vulnerable, she resisted. By intentionally not putting out a …

The “American Dream” of acquiring a college education is not a realistic goal for every citizen in the United States. Today a college education is becoming a necessity and Latino citizens are not provided with the same opportunities that Caucasian students are. This study looks at the college education gap among Latina/os and compares the college graduation rates between Latinos and Caucasians. Using peer review sources, the study assesses the impact of this education gap on job opportunities, wages and overall earning potential and quality of life among Latina/os and Caucasians. The Necessity Of Minority Ethnic Studies In The American Education Curriculum, Destiny L. Vaught
The Necessity Of Minority Ethnic Studies In The American Education Curriculum, Destiny L. Vaught
2016 Symposium
From the very start of the educational career students are rarely exposed to the history, culture, and contributions of other ethnic groups that tie together the American way of life, past and present. Not until individuals reach higher education, are they introduced to studies that are designed specifically to enlighten the student’s knowledge of minorities and other ethnicities in the United States. In this study, I used peer review sources to highlight the advantages of schools that teach ethnic studies classes and the importance of understanding different groups of people at an earlier stage in a student’s life. The study …

Undocumented Immigrants And The Constitutional Rights Of Their U.S. Born Children, Jennifer Rogers
2016 Symposium
In this essay I will discuss language of the 14th Amendment, which grants automatic citizenship to every child born on US soil, regardless of the immigration status of their parents. These children have been typecast by the media as “anchor” babies. Through primary documents and peer review journals, this paper will show the nature of what it's like to be a child of an undocumented immigrant and the rights they have. The funding for these children with undocumented parents has been widely disputed and will discuss in-depth about what type of services the U.S. is responsible for. With the upcoming …

Latina/O Education And Its Effects On Overall Job Success, Megan Lee
Latina/O Education And Its Effects On Overall Job Success, Megan Lee
2016 Symposium
Young Hispanics today struggle with the American education system, especially those that are foreign-born. This is because Latina/o immigrants are part of an education system that is inadequate to meet their educational needs. A common problem immigrant’s face in the classroom is their inability to communicate. Also, teachers are not trained to communicate effectively with their student populations. For example, according to the National Education Association only 2.5% of teachers who instruct bilingual students have a degree in ESL-bilingual education. This can be a factor for which Latina/o immigrants score lower on standardized tests and the shortcomings associated with an …

This study takes a sociological outlook on the reasons Latin American immigrants migrate to the United States. The study will uncover the racist outlook and stereotypes Americans feel toward this particular immigrant group whether they be documented or undocumented. Using academic peer review sources, the study uncovers the factors that produce these negative attitudes towards this outgroup and sheds light on best practices to reduce racial tensions between them. Among these strategies include cracking down on extreme political rhetoric that incites prejudicial attitudes and potential violence.

The Economy And Mexican Immigrants, Austin Schulz
2016 Symposium
This paper will focus on the economic impact that immigrants from Mexico, documented and undocumented, have on the United States economy. In this study, I use peer reviewed sources to show how much immigrants contribute to the economy; with how much they pay in taxes and the wages they earn as they toiled in their respective jobs. Additionally, this study explores the impact Mexican immigrants have on the unemployment rate of native born Americans as well as the U.S. national debt. This study also looks at the impact of undocumented immigration, and the cost/contributions to the US tax payers. Finally, …

Stereotypes And Popular Misconceptions Of Latino Immigration, Teddy J. Mead
2016 Symposium
The focus of this research paper is to briefly address the scenarios behind Latin American immigration into the United States, as well as its effects on American culture. With the use of peer reviewed sources and scholarly articles the research conducted directly reflects current issues in the media today. This work explores three main areas including: government intervention in an era focused on Latino Immigration to the United States, the cultural misconceptions conveyed by a naïve American public, and a debunking of negative stereotypes regarding Latino Immigration.
Latin@S In The Labor Work Force, Vanessa Murillo
Latin@S In The Labor Work Force, Vanessa Murillo
2016 Symposium
This study focuses on the overrepresentation of Latino/as in farm labor jobs and the factors causing this trend, including the lax employer verification requirements. Using peer review sources, this work assesses the extent to which the federal government is complicit by allowing certain industry sectors such as the agribusiness with less stringent employment verification requirements than the technology or scientific industry. The study shows this bias application of laws create a form of exploitation and an underclass of Latina/o immigrants locked out of better job opportunities. Finally, this research points out to DACA, the executive order issued by President Obama …
