Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship
Incorporating descriptions and analyses of sound into Middle Eastern history offers a wealth of opportunity for enriching our understanding of the historical record. But sometimes we need to get back to the basics: the “five w's and one h” of sound studies, so to speak. In what follows I would like to run this simple exercise with radio in the Mandate-era Levant, in order to lay out the basic data and begin to reflect on how it might aid scholars in better understanding other aspects of life in this period. I will do this by first addressing some of these …

In this series of articles we are exploring some key areas that need to be addressed in any serious discussion about ethnic separation in the Adventist Church. The previous article reviewed the theological debate that speaks to the issue of organizational segregation in the church. Does the Word of God demand integration at all levels of the organization, or does it allow for some form of segregation? In this article we will describe some of the psychological and sociological realities that lead us to naturally segregate ourselves.

Apollo 13: The Longest Hour, Sy Libergot
ERAU Prescott Aviation History Program
The epic story of Apollo 13 is well known, but hear the inside details from the NASA flight controller who was on duty when the unthinkable happened. Author of Apollo EECOM, Journey of a Lifetime, Sy Libergot’s space experience began in 1966 and spanned the entire Apollo Lunar Program; Skylab; the Apollo-Soyuz project; early Shuttle and even the International Space Station, but Apollo 13 would become the unwelcome highlight of his flight controller career. Don’t miss this exciting talk by the man who was at the console when it all happened.

Dehexing Postwar West Balkan Masculinities: The Case Of Bosnia, Croatia, And Serbia, 1998 To 2015, Marko Dumančić
History Faculty Publications
Focusing on Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia, this article examines film and music that emerged in the region since the end of the Yugoslav Wars of Succession. We analyze how the uncertainties of the postwar era facilitated a dynamic field of cultural contestation in which the music and film industries simultaneously challenge and affirm normative masculine sociocultural roles. Although traditional norms have not lost their primacy in public life, we emphasize the fact that attitudes toward masculinity have, in general, become increasingly ambiguous and multivalent. While local sociological studies accurately observe that violence and intolerance constitute central traits for the majority …

Faculty Work Comprehensive List
"When we talk about loving God with our minds, I suspect that most of the time we think of academic work that is rational and analytical. But in making poems, the more mysterious subconscious mind is employed along with the analytical."

Our Lady Of Mount Carmel, Jason Paul Bourgeois
Our Lady Of Mount Carmel, Jason Paul Bourgeois
Marian Library Faculty Publications
Introduction:
The Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a Roman Catholic religious order commonly called the Carmelites, began in the early 1200s as a collection of hermits gathered together in a semi-monastic lifestyle on Mount Carmel in present-day Israel. They requested a rule of life from Saint Albert, the Latin-rite patriarch of Jerusalem, not long before his death in 1214. This original Carmelite foundation was under the patronage of Mary from the beginning. However, after the purported apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Saint Simon Stock in the 1250s, in which she told him that those who died …

Scapular, Jason Paul Bourgeois
Marian Library Faculty Publications
Introduction: A scapular is a sacramental garment of the Catholic church, usually consisting of two pieces of sewn cloth attached by strings and worn over the shoulders with one piece hanging over the chest and the other hanging over the back. The scapular was originally a component of some religious habits, the set of garments worn by members of a religious order, but later a smaller version (usually one inch by two inches) began to be worn under the clothes by laypersons who wished to associate with a particular religious order.
Carmelites And Miracles, Jason Paul Bourgeois
Carmelites And Miracles, Jason Paul Bourgeois
Marian Library Faculty Publications
Introduction: The Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel were a religious order of Roman Catholic hermits that gathered together in the early 1200s to live a semi-monastic lifestyle in the mountain range of Carmel, near Haifa in present-day Israel. The Carmelites, as they came to be called, followed a rule of life written by Saint Albert, the Latin-rite patriarch of Jerusalem, and approved by Pope Honorius III in 1226. Due to military conquests in the region by Muslims, the Carmelites soon migrated to various parts of Europe and were transformed into a mendicant order, although their rule specified a …
