Richard Baxter's Paradigm For Pastoral Spiritual Formation, Robert W. Hyatt Jr Feb 2016

Richard Baxter's Paradigm For Pastoral Spiritual Formation, Robert W. Hyatt Jr

Doctor of Ministry

This dissertation outlines the thoughts of Puritan pastor Richard Baxter regarding the spiritual lives of clergy and applies his thoughts to those in ministry today. Though Baxter lived some 400 years ago, his passion for the spiritual formation of pastors and concern that their lives preach the same message they delivered from the pulpit is relevant to pastors in any age, not least in our own. Section 1 describes broadly the state of those in ministry today. Section 2 describes the often “business-like” approach many take to ministry and its shortcomings. Section 3 traces some of the themes of Baxter’s …

Spiritual Disciplines Of Early Adventists, Heather Ripley Crews Feb 2016

Spiritual Disciplines Of Early Adventists, Heather Ripley Crews

Doctor of Ministry

The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the Biblical spirituality of the early Adventist Church in order to apply the spiritual principles learned to the contemporary church. Though it is God who changes people, the early Adventists employed specific spiritual practices to place themselves in His presence. Research revealed five main spiritual disciplines that shaped the Advent leaders and by extension the church. The first is Bible study: placing the Holy Scriptures as the foundation for all beliefs. The second is prayer: communication and communion with God. The third is healthful living: treating the body well so God’s work …

Viennese Kineticism And Beyond: A Bibliography Of Austrian Women Artists, Dianne Isom, Dr. Rob Mcfarland

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While the advent of digital archives have revolutionized the discipline of Women’s Studies, the current online offerings of visual and textual works by German-speaking women artists, especially Austrian artists, lag far behind the digital collections of their English-, French-, and Spanish-language contemporaries. Brigham Young University’s Sophie Digital Library project is the largest and most-used online archive of works by German-speaking women, but its collections focus only on literature, music and science. Using the successful and widely-used platform of the Sophie archive, my mentor and I attempted to help round out the archive’s collection with an extensive digital archive of visual …

This reflection booklet was prepared by the Office of Mission at the College of the Holy Cross to serve as a prayer aid throughout the liturgical season of Lent. Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Archaeological projects increasingly collect airborne LiDAR data to use as a remote sensing tool for survey and analysis. Publication possibilities for LiDAR datasets, however, are limited due to the large size and often proprietary nature of the data. Fortunately, web-based, geographic information systems (WebGIS) that can securely manage temporal and spatial data hold great promise as virtual research environments for working with and publishing LiDAR data. To test this and to obtain new data for archaeological research, in 2013, the MayaArch3D Project (www.mayaarch3d.org) collected LiDAR data for the archaeological site of Copan, Honduras. Results include: 1) more accurate archaeological maps, …

From The Margins: The Underrepresentation Of Black And Latino Students/Teachers In Music Education, Lisa C. Delorenzo, Marissa Silverman

John J. Cali School of Music Scholarship and Creative Works

There is an alarming gap between rising numbers of minority students and a shrinking minority teaching force. The purpose of this research was to explore the question: Why are so few students of color preparing to teach music in the public schools? Black and Latino music students and teachers who graduated from urban high schools in northern New Jersey were interviewed about their race/ethnic related experiences in college along with their ideas about the scarcity of music students of color in music teacher education. Data, presented in narrative form, indicated a complex web of factors that discourage high school students …

Jefferson Nursing Oral Histories

Colleen Young Elwood discovered her interest in nursing after finishing a Bachelor’s of Science in psychology and starting her career at Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Learning about diabetes and working with diabetics sparked an interest in public and community health so she enrolled in Thomas Jefferson University’s two-year BSN program, which she graduated from in 2013. While at Jefferson her clinical experiences confirmed she was not interested in hospital nursing but instead in community nursing. After graduating she started working at Nurse Family Partnership, first as an intern and then as a Nurse-Home Visitor, where she helps new mothers during …

Epistemic Contrastivism, Knowledge And Practical Reasoning, Peter Baumann Feb 2016

Epistemic Contrastivism, Knowledge And Practical Reasoning, Peter Baumann

Philosophy Faculty Works

Epistemic contrastivism is the view that knowledge is a ternary relation between a person, a proposition and a set of contrast propositions. This view is in tension with widely shared accounts of practical reasoning: be it the claim that knowledge of the premises is necessary for acceptable practical reasoning based on them or sufficient for the acceptability of the use of the premises in practical reasoning, or be it the claim that there is a looser connection between knowledge and practical reasoning. Given plausible assumptions, epistemic contrastivism implies that we should cut all links between knowledge and practical reasoning. However, …

Interior Design Senior Projects

I have been a designer all my life, examining objects and structures by the very small details that make them what they are. I love to create, reinvent, and modify any project that comes into my hands. I love how things work and are put together. I’ve always wanted to create designs that would make the public think in how they live their lives and how to treat the world around them. I want to be a designer that changes the world and helps those who can’t help themselves. I want to make the world a better place to live …
